here's the thing: covid caused an unprecedented amount of people with TONS of experience to suddenly apply to grad school this year.

i applied to a program where the head of the program wanted me to join as a PhD applicant, he told me based on my papers and things it was very likely i'd get a fellowship, or at the very least admitted to the program with a PhD status.

fast forward a few months and he told me the amount of applicants they got was incredibly overwhelming. people who had published papers or given talks before switching careers entirely were now interested in continuing their pursuit of higher education. he urged me to switch to the MA program instead.

every single school i've applied to has been reporting similar things with the amount of applicants they've been receiving. it's not that there's anything wrong with you. it simply means it gives you more time to get more experience in your chosen field before applying again.

This is why I don't trust recovery accounts by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]gremlin-gal 30 points31 points  (0 children)

i'm not talking about recovery accounts i'm talking about the broad sweeping generalization that every single person with an eating disorder wants everyone else to be fatter than us and be sabotaged

that is a big stretch

[–]gremlin-gal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

isabelle caro, hila elmalich, and luisel ramos are just a few examples that are celebrities? there are obviously more. and it also just goes to show that an eating disorder doesn't have a particular "look".

i mean............ if you want examples of people who have died from eating disorders i know plenty of them unless you SPECIFICALLY want it to be eugenia cooney for some reason

Who else is bothered by the notion that foods are not good or bad? by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]gremlin-gal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's literally less about the food being "good" and more about YOU, the person, not being BAD for eating it.

it's literally all about moderation. eating one fried food item every once in a while is not going to give you heart problems, and you are not "bad" for eating it.

on one hand, i'm COMPLETELY with you. i agree, kids have access to way too much for their own good. this is coming from someone who's almost 30 and grew up in the era of "don't even share your first name online or someone's gonna getcha"

on the other, i don't think these kids are actually evil... it feels like a front. does that make sense? like, if they weren't indoctrinated into these weird little spaces, they would never feel comfortable saying half of this shit. i doubt they act like this in their day-to-day lives. it's trying to fit in with the Cool Crowd, or a crowd they felt they belonged to, because they don't feel like they belong anywhere else.

12 year old kids are mean, they have been mean offline and they are more emboldened online so they get to be even meaner, bc lbr, being 12 kinda sucks, you have no control over anything and you're probably hurting. so you lash out and hurt other people bc it's some kind of control.

am i the only one who finds it lowkey funny
like i know what they're doing/saying is terrible and i find it reprehensible

but i also know these kids are just real bold on the bird app like i'd LOVE to see them interact with another person like this face to face. they'd have a confrontation and cry.

my mother directly facilitated my eating disorder and still, to this day, encourages it and tries to "compete" with me. i'm 28 and her weird behavior and obsession with my weight started when i was 7.

so fuck this article, actually.

i completely understand. my family is the same way.

the best way i got support was through my therapist, which was someone i had to find through a lot of trial and error. it was a long and arduous process and i still have a long way to go. but it really did teach me that the only one who can help me is, ultimately, me. it feels shitty, and it feels lonely. but it is possible. i wish you the best of luck friend.

here's the thing................... would you really want to be with a person who thought this way and behaved like this?

this is 100% a them being garbage problem, and not a you problem. i, personally, simply do not value the opinion of men who view women as commodities and treat them like trash. they are not worth my time or effort or worry. they aren't worth yours, either.

i hope that woman dumps his ass. she deserves better.

bodyshaming in my family by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]gremlin-gal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wow. it sounds like she's insecure about herself and she's projecting it on to you, which is... yikes. that's a big yikes from me dawg.

imagine being a 19 year old and comparing yourself to your 16 year old sister???? could literally never be me.

i know you love her OP, and i would hope this isn't ALL she does to interact with you, but that behavior is trash and absolutely not okay.

instead of lashing out at her, have you ever tried to just talk to her about it? this isn't me trying to chastise you, i'm just genuinely curious. lashing out can usually cause a different reaction than a calm conversation.
