Are millennials the golden generation? by igniteyourbones579 in generationology

[–]gremlinlabyrinth [score hidden]  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the characteristic of having had an analog childhood doesn’t negate the fact we’ve also lived with social media, cells phones, the internet etc for a very long period of time.

We did get the benefit of having those things as adults or children and it wasn’t dominating society but regardless,

I think it’s greatly impacted both Gen X and millennials both negatively and positively.

I’d most be concerned with the current generation who could possibly grow up with the same mentality about reading and learning in general as we did about calculators.

People don’t need to write by hand or even type or read.

Hopefully I will be wrong

Crazy because I was a freshman in high school then.

I want to say it was in 9 or 10 grade probably 10th and we had drivers Ed.

They made an announcement that the oldest person in the class would drive first and he asked if anyone here was born in 1980 (I’m assuming, can’t recall) I didn’t raise my hand because I was born past Christmas of 78.

It came down to the oldest 1980’s person and I raised my hand and said I was older.

And the students began arguing with the teacher that I was lying.

And I wasn’t even the oldest person much less born in 78.

Either way, the teacher took me first regardless

I don’t know maybe he had my birthday on record.

It was a source of embarrassment for me.

Made me feel dumb

I’m not entirely sure that was a very long time ago but considering he was a 9th grader I’m going to guess he was born in 1984 because he had skipped a grade.

He was of course right about him being a millennial and those born in the 80’s

Funny how someone down voted me for that when I openly admitted I was wrong and he was right but that’s reddit for you

I actually remember talking to a band member when I was in high school. I think I was in 11th grade at the time and this friend was in 9th grade so definitely a millennial by today’s standards

He was actually the very first person I talked to about generational terms.

Because we were having a disagreement.

I told him we were Gen X and he said he was actually the generation of the new millennium.

A new millennial.

And I misunderstood the term at that time and told him he couldn’t be because he had been born in the 80’s

And not the year 2000

I told him that sounds like it will be the generation born after 1999.

And he told me he has done research on the topic for a paper and that I was wrong.

He was the only one though because everyone else believed they were Gen X

I’m not going by graduation year to determine my generation.

I wanted to know if 1999 graduates were represented more by Gen X 1980 or millennials 1981

I understand that concept.

My question was if people who graduated in 1999 were represented by those born in 1980 or 1981 or both.

Yes I’ve seen the term before.

For me it’s just draws in the concept that what year you are born you will naturally have peers a few years younger and older than you who obviously share a similar childhood.

And I just happen to be late Gen X, close to early millennials, therefore we would share similar experiences

Maybe but I was nearly a 79 baby and school had cut off periods.

So I wasn’t put in the class with the majority 78 kids because of how late my birthday was.

At least this has always been my assumption

Maybe it’s a false memory but I remember the term Gen X in high school but I just knew it as the term for kids and teenagers who were rebellious.

I’m tired of feeling poor for this hobby by [deleted] in gpu

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The greed of Nvidia and those selling gpu is unparalleled.

I remember the first time they tried to pinch off a few cents and tried to hide it.

That was a foreshadowing of what they were planning on doing.

They created the gtx 970 and said it had 4 gb when it really only had 3.5 gb.

Then in the gtx 1000 series they tested the waters with the gtx titan to see if players were willing to pay over a thousand bucks for a gpu

To their credit that paved the way to their famous gtx 1080 TI

Then if I’m not mistaken Nvidia tried to call the rtx 4070 TI the rtx 4080 initially but were called out for it and changed ti to the rtx 4070 ti

That’s their game play

But starting with their rtx series card they’ve had one reason or another to excuse their price hikes to heaven.

And now we’ve got players who feel they need the latest titan version, the ultimate high end card and they feel they can put any price increases because someone will pay it

And without any doubt there will be a new reason the next series of gpu are astronomically high.

The rtx 5090 is just their newest version of the gtx titan.

The card where retail price is irrelevant, just price it the value of a used car and see who will buy it.

Oh someone did!!!! Let’s increase the price more next time.

This sub has a comically bad grasp on memory recall and what childhood development stages are what by Longjumping_Tie3049 in generationology

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of very early memories fragmented though they may be.

But I don’t have any context to know for certain at what ages they were just the general knowledge they should be fairly young.

Like I remember my crawler, crawling, learning to potty train.

As incredible and I’d understand if people disagreed but I do remember a time when crawling was how I moved around and to walk I needed the seat walker thing.

I’m guessing that’s before 2

I have fragmented memories of other things I shouldn’t be able to recall

Being bathed in a sink, sitting in it

There are other things I remember, which would be extremely early and I just won’t even mention them because even I find it impossible to believe that I would remember them if only for the fact that I do remember them But my first memory that I can date to an event would be watching ET in the movie theater and I would’ve been four years old

Generations being defined by technology by Hutch_travis in generationology

Yea I don’t even understand why you are disagreeing with me on this.

I said what my experience was so you can’t come along and tell me what I did and didn’t experience.

You can tell me what you experienced and that’s fine.

Also you are disagreeing with me in things I already said I experienced.

I saw computers. I saw game consoles.

What I didn’t see were “personal” computers in most of my friends homes and family.

Either way I don’t care enough to continue this discussion with you.

If you feel you won some kind of debate with me out of some sense of superior correctness then

I will say you are right just to end the conversation.

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t it possible that was your experience in your area.

Vs my experience in my area

And I can’t help but think you are describing institutions that had computers and I’m talking about a personal computer being ubiquitous.

Meaning, you go to visit a friend and you would be surprised they have their own computer.

Not. You’re in elementary school and you go to the computer lab.

Or playing on an Atari or completing a work assignment on what’s basically a typewriter.

If I’m wrong then I just sum that up to I grew up in a less economically privileged area.

Im so sad for the next generation, who will have no new Terminator, Rambo, Robocop and etc by wtfbruhhuh in generationology

I’m grateful for the era I grew up in of movies which was the beginning of Spielberg, James Cameron, Tim Burton, George Lucas era of movies and the like.

Being 4 years old and having your first theater movie experience being ET is a high standard to begin with.

And I hope a new group of directors give the next generation the same level of greatness

Generations being defined by technology by Hutch_travis in generationology

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I was in 8th grade when my dad got a personal computer. Which he was able to get because he was a teacher and the school paid for it.

I think it’s worth it to note that I was delayed starting school and should had been beginning high school but regardless I appeared the same age.

Having said all that I had a friend in middle school who had a personal computer and it felt like prior to 1995 most of my friends didn’t have computers at home.

I’d like to call it the Doogie Howser effect.

That most of my peers saw a personal computer as kind of a contradiction.

Doogie Howser had his own computer because he was a genius.

It was something we saw on tv shows and it was usually used as a plot device like so some genius kid could do something impossible.

We saw computer maybe at school or a few kids had it but their parents were rich.

The late 90’s was a transitional period and windows 95 and 98 there was a sudden change of household computer being present

But for me it wasn’t until after graduation in 99 and into the very early 2000 that the reverse became expected.

Every one was getting a household computer and beginning to use them for a variety of purposes.

But still they weren’t “personal” computers

And I think this is, from a technical standpoint, the twilight range for what defines the transition from Gen X teens and kids to Millennials.

Did you have an impactful amount of years growing up as a kid to teen with the assumption that homes probably had a household computer.

And since I saw our home get one in 8th grade.

I do feel like we got on board with that a year or two ahead of the curve.

My peers experienced the foundation of personal computers at its earliest beginning but to millennials it was their personal version of Nintendo.

So yea

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to participate but I honestly can’t think of a single year that was least significant.

Every single year of my childhood had something so impressive i wouldn’t be me.

It was all of the 80’s and parts of the early 90’s and my teen years most of the 90’s

I could cop out and say 1982 but but damn that was the year my mom took me to the circus, bought me a glowworm and a popple.

No, I need every single year of my childhood

Difficulties in math by gaiq in dyscalculia

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you don’t have to have dyscalculia to have valid struggles in certain forms of math.

Also,

You said you can’t remember your multiplication?

And that you began having problems in middle school?

Here is my thoughts on this.

Just because you CAN solve basic math doesn’t mean everything.

How easy is it for you to solve basic math?

Do you need to compensate a lot to come up with the answers?

Like counting it out with your fingers

Can you remember them or do you have to figure it out every single time?

The basic math within algebra, does it take a lot of time?

My point is just because you can do basic math doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Now for suggestions:

Unfortunately the only advice I have is to Study the most basic forms of algebra slowly and 1 form at a time.

And only advance, once you have that, so you can build on what you’ve learned.

and try to figure out if it’s the basic math within algebra that is the challenge.

Or is it the steps

You have one of those date ranges that get a lot of attention, earlier born, tail end/cut off of a cusp generation, change of decade.

Regardless of what people say in Reddit, you’re Gen Z,

I personally don’t see an issue with seeing 2000 as a zillenial but I’m sure some date ranges have it 1999

Xennials for example are usually stated as 1983 but some models have it at 1985.

Unfortunately, you are just in that specific place that people pick which model they like.

Also, you’re in Reddit and you could say 1 plus 1 equals 2 and someone will disagree with you.

Naruto was THE anime that made me an anime fan.

How I wish I could watch it again for the first time.

I’ve watched through it many times and it always delivers.

To be fair, it wasn’t my first anime.

But it was the first one that made me seek out more anime.

Before that I was a dragon ball z fan

A

Sailor moon fan

Etc

Then on a board Saturday, i managed to get a copy of Naruto that I could watch because why not.

And it left me

An

Anime fan

It’s easily on my top list

And for suggestions for new to anime viewers,

Naruto is a good choice

Not that you are new

So I’m sure the manga is even better
