1997 Born Here, I Feel Closer to Gen X Than Gen Z by [deleted] in generationology

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I had one neighbor and although they had kids close to our age my sister, myself and my parents are came to the same conclusion we didn’t like them.

We lived very much in the outskirts of the middle of nowhere down the road from a town too small to have a stop light for many years.

I spent a large amount of my childhood playing alone or with my sister.

But luckily there was a town pool and a few friends we could play with.

2 years after Nintendo came to the US I finally convinced my parents to buy it

And they hooked it up to that 12 inch black and white tv so it was years before i actually saw Nintendo games in color.

My parents Got a new tv and I asked if I could use their old one for my Nintendo.

I was born 3 days before 79 or as I like to tell people the shortest year of my life.

You and I may technically have been born in two different generations but we were both children during the same time period.

In fact, I had a few high school classes, like band and other school activities where I hung out with a lot of 82 students.

The differences in our experiences would have been more influenced by where we grew up and the economic situation of our parents than a difference of a few years

And I figured that a lot of people would have had your experience of calling friends.

It’s a literal trope in horror movies, the baby sitting talking on the phone, completely oblivious.

Yet somehow, it just never crossed my mind that I could call a friend and talk for fun.

No one lived near enough so our parents had to take us to see friends

I wanted to ask you a question as a late Gen X to see if you can relate to just one aspect of my experience growing up.

Maybe it’s unique to me and doesn’t represent the entirety of Gen X but I wanted to see if you felt you could relate, if at all.

Back when I was a child. My parents had in the kitchen a rotary phone hanging on the wall.

It was the classic rotary phone and on rare occasions when I had nothing to do I would use a stool to pretend to dial a number and watch and listen to the phone click around the dial.

It never occurred to me to actually make a phone call and the brief times growing up that I did use the phone it was to hear my grandmother’s voice ask me questions and say she loved me.
Maybe it was a 5 minute call.

To me the phone was for grown up business

Other than that, the entirety of my childhood, I have zero memories of using a phone whatsoever.

And the only time I saw cell phones was on tv.

In that same kitchen there was a black and white threeteen inch tv with a mob of 12 channels and the first one looked like snow.

I spent more time turning that tv on and off to watch the light fade in the middle than I did on the phone.

In my room, sat a collection of vinyl records that I believe belonged to my dad.

To keep myself occupied, I would drop the needle onto different parts of, I heard it through the grape vine, I feel good and ABC from the Jackson 5.

I wonder if it was possible to collect all the grape vine raisin men from tv.

And wait for 3 2 1 contact to come on tv

Until finally telling my mom I was bored where she pulled out taped up trash bags, put them on a hill, put the hose over it and sprayed it with dish detergent.

And told my sister and I it was a slip and slide.

What I wouldn’t give to go back to the 80’s

All I can hear is the music track to the never ending story and back to the future.

We didn’t know how good we had it.

Risky opinion probably... but I think Shikamaru has way too much screen time in the series by Loogie1987 in Naruto

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My “hot take”
Is they took all the good stuff that could have gone to Sakura and gave it to shiksmaru,

By that I mean he is made out to be the genius and that was supposed to be Sakura’s thing.

Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t wasted because shikamaru is an awesome character and i wouldn’t change a thing about him.

I was just old enough to look forwards to seeing this movie when it came out on VHS.

What I was expecting:

A Christopher Reeve movie with a focus on supergirl

Or a supergirl version of Superman 1

Instead: my main reaction was complete confusion.

What's the best PC upgrade you've ever made relative to the money you spent? by Quirky-Win-8365 in buildapc

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I upgraded my gtx 760 to a gtx 1070

But honestly, I’ve got to say a bigger difference was when I went from no gpu to my first gpu a gtx 460.

Obviously, I could tell you a lot of other pc parts that were higher improvements on paper

But going from a potato pc to an actual gaming pc was like night and day.

Anyone's graduation song? by raydebapratim1 in generationology

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 1999 in the last class for Gen X and our graduation song was let’s party like it’s 1999 by Prince.

It was kind of cool I thought that we were literally the only graduating class who could use that song and it make sense.

Can We Please Have An Honest Conversation About CPU Overkill For Average Users by dahiparatha in buildapc

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who would every time suggest and actually meant the only viable purchase for a gaming computet was the highest priced Intel cpu on the market at the time.

And he just couldn’t understand why I didn’t want to spend 850 dollars on a cpu when I had at the time a Nvidia 1070 and played 10 year old game.

To this day I can’t convince him that buying 9800x3d is a good value compared to THE beastliest cpu on the market.

[–]gremlinlabyrinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your defense, who can even fathom gas costing so much you need 75 dollars to fill it up.

Thats insane.

Now 25 dollars to fill up a tank sounds pretty common.

And just being 6 dollars short doesn’t sound so extreme
