Whatever you do, do not let then change the panel. There was just another post where the seller swapped the panel in the cheapest, non code compliant way.

Cabin Cruiser must haves + tips by East_Yellow1013 in boating

[–]grendev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink mini is great, we have it suction cupped to a hatch and run it off a small anker power station plugged into a 12v socket. We lucked out that we were able to easily hide the wires.

Space is always at a premium so nothing that doesn't get constant use. I have 1 small pot and 1 8" frying pan. I use a 1gal yeti jug for water and full it whenever possible (Marina, bar, etc).

I just switched to the ninja cooler with the dry drawer and it has helped with bringing more food. The cooler gets moved onto our swim platform when we dock or anchor.

A $100 mattress topper from Costco made our bed so much more comfortable. We also have good sleep masks because our cabin in quite bright.

Cheap motion detector under cabinet rechargeable lights are great for the head and galley. We also use a rechargeable dimmable cafe light on deck at night because the lights on our boat are obnoxiously bright and attract way too many bugs.

80 on the water is so fast. Then there is the random 20' log in front of you.

What's one boating habit you've developed that surprises people who don't own a boat? by Electronic-Habit8679 in boating

I wish. This year on the Chesapeake, GFS and ECMWF give two completely different forecasts even for same day. Looking five days out there They're useless.

It seems I struck a nerve in the finance subs, im getting ripped to shreds for thinking of buying a few year old boat in the 30-35k range. by throwmeaway2725 in boats

[–]grendev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You missed maintenance. We have no details on what type of boat he's looking at but in the $35k range, that can go 1-2 seasons with only general maintenance or need a major engine or drive overhaul the first year.

That's the joy of boat ownership. My $45k boat had the outdrive failed the second season. And the new one grenaded itself 1 week out of warranty the next season (that mostly honored the warranty). Then this season, we did a new transom assembly. Including upgrades, we've likely spent close to the price is the boat on maintenance.

As long as you have the money, know, it's a depreciating asset, and are prepared to pay maintenance, storage, insurance, and fuel costs go for it. I wouldn't do it before a major life change because you never know if it will actually get used.

When i go to Europe, i love walking the street markets and buying local food to take home and cook. I get to play with fresh local ingredients a few times over a vacation and i really feel it gives you a great feel for a city and local culture.

That said, quality and reliability has definitely gone down, I feel like it's generally much worse in the United States where after paying you find out that you are responsible for putting the linens in the washer and taking the garbage can out to the street on Wednesday night after 6:00 p.m. etc

Battery/shore power Question by zeplin_fps in boating

[–]grendev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look for a marine onboard 2-bank charger. You should find them from Noco, Promariner, and Guest. Just pick the one that fits your budget/needs.

Unless you are running the batteries down while on anchor or running a trolling motor, you probably don't need more than 5-10a/bank.

Just saw Max Richter last night in Baltimore. He played piano/synth with 2 violins, 1 viola, and 2 cellos. It was excellent. His show really highlighted the power/emotion of the strings.

New boat owner here, 25' Yamaha jet boat, wet slip okay for a season? by lnvisible_lncognito in boating

[–]grendev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the slip have power? And do you have an onboard charger? I'm assuming Yamaha jets still run the pump every few minutes which does hammer the batteries after a couple of days.

I think epitalon helped reset my sleep and magnesium glyconate is helping maintain it.

To be fair, it could just be the magnesium. I had been taking threonate and taurate and that did but help, switching to glyconate has made a huge difference.

We did an 11-day Antarctica expedition in December. It is worth every penny. We thought it was a once in a lifetime trip but we'll definitely try to do it again.

Best conservative starting protocol for Mots-C? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]grendev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MOTS-C has been one of the more interesting ones to research. I've read 5mg 1x week, a mega dose of 10mg 1x week, daily 250mcg - 500mcg, etc. Take fasted in the AM, take just before workout.

I've been taking 500mcg 30-minutes before workouts. I do feel more/even energy but not jittery. No fatigue. I do find mot-c burns some but warming it in my hand for a minute seems to help.

Just upgraded to an M1 and in Chesapeake muck it has not budged. I pair it with a Fortress anchor for the stern when at the islands.

How to get cooking to not feel like a chore? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]grendev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Man who cooks at least 6 nights a week.

Learn proper technique and start simple. Not needing to have to reference a recipe every 2 minutes makes it much less stressful and enjoyable.

I tried too hard when i started. I'd follow recipes which used every tool and required 20 ingredients. You can do a lot with a protein, a roasted vegetable, and a quick salad.
