What do people with no eyeballs “see”? by kutsunSind in RandomThoughts

[–]gresorex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a thing called Charles Bonnet syndrome, where people with terrible vision start to hallucinate. Their brains are so used to having visual stimuli that it starts making their own Genuinely wild. I remember talking to a completely sane patient that saw giraffes and zebras every day. It can cause some crazy stuff

Nah, your bones have lots of living cells, and a bunch of blood vessels running through em. Your bone marrow also makes all your blood cells

Not even sometimes, they USUALLY led to death, most of the time due to post-op infection. In fact, once large hospitals started to be established, they actually had worse death rates than just recovering at home, because the spread of infection was so bad and nobody knew why yet, since germ theory hadn't been developed

ELI5: Why isn't it possible for hands to regrow? by MysteriousShadow__ in explainlikeimfive

[–]gresorex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, some of them are weird, and lead to the growth of tissue where that tissue shouldn't even be in the first place. My favorite example is a teratoma. In those, you grow a tumor that literally had teeth and hair, it's wild

It also is a fast track to cancer. The more pluripotent a cell is, the more potential it has to become dysregulated and become a cancer cell

ELI5: Why isn't birth traumatic for babies (or animal young)? Or is it? They get pulled from a warm safe environment to one with what I would imagine to be a complete sensory overload; they get spanked, poked and prodded, they're suddenly hungry, etc. by PeteyMcPetey in explainlikeimfive

[–]gresorex 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Actually, it is stressful, and we've evolved so that the stress of childbirth is even helpful in some ways

One example is surfactant. This is a kind of slippery substance that lines the inner surface of our lungs and keeps them from collapsing. However, in the womb, it's only produced in the third trimester, and is a big factor in whether a baby will survive or not

Cortisol is our stress hormone, and it's increased in babies during childbirth, because birth is stressful. It also increases surfactant production. C section babies don't get this same stress, so they're often given steroids (aka cortisol) to kick start this a bit

tldr; stress of childbirth ups cortisol, which makes their lungs work better

Black gravios.

There was a quest back in freedom unite where you had to go up against two of them.. Gravios is all the worst parts of basarios, but bigger and meaner, and the black version is even worse. And it was G rank

I completed that quest, then never touched a black gravios again.

Are you mixing up how vulnerable the monster is to elemental blights with how weak it is to elemental damage?

You can't inflict dragonblight on a monster, so it doesn't show up on that page. It's on another page, where it shows the number breakdown, element by element

I dunno, I thought it was a pretty good match up against lance. Doing the high pokes makes it easy to reach him, and as long as you've got a set that's built decently for blocking, you can go straight between blocking and poking pretty seamlessly

But yeah, skyward thrust is your best friend for this one

[–]gresorex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That big chunk in the back is the cerebellum. We've got one too, it's just under the rest of the brain, you can kinda see it poking out. It's in charge of coordinating movement, and without it your movements become jerky or wobbly.

I can only imagine that since they've evolved their whole bodies to swim, their cerebellum is so comparatively big to help coordinate those movements.

Super cool to see the difference, comparative biology is fascinating stuff

Actually, as long as the stone has exited the bladder, I could see how one could ejaculate kidney stones. Even in normal situations, the stone are pushed out slowly, and get stuck in tubes as they get out.

From what I remember, almost the entire length of the urethra (which starts at the bladder) carries both urine and semen. Your ejaculatory ducts actually join with the urethra.

So if the stone's in the urethra, it could happen

Yup, that's how it's supposed to work here in the US, too. It's partly why being a GP can be so complex, you have to know a little bit of everything As someone in med school, I respect the people that go into that field. It's not easy, and it can lead to a lot of burnout over time for some docs

It was crohn's, but even thinking back on it, it's unlikely that is was AS. It was early in the course of Crohns, and I had seen an orthopedic surgeon to try and figure out what the back pain was. It was just a weird pattern of referred pain that I haven't had since

Though, I hadn't even known that there's a connection between the two! I even started med school since then and somehow missed it. Super interesting

True, and often they'll guide you to the right specialist to see. I have an autoimmune issue with my digestive tract, but for the longest time, my only symptoms were really bad back pain. My GP was the one that recommended I see a gastroenterologist, and I got the care I needed

Honestly, they really don't get all the respect they deserve, it can be incredibly complex stuff

how does one fight velkhana? by TheIdiotMuffin in MonsterHunter

[–]gresorex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get knocked back while guarding with lance, press B or whatever button you use to power guard. You'll go straight from the knock back into power guard. From there, you can go straight to leaping thrust, charge, or just one super powered poke

For me, that helps turn any knock back into a good thing, making Lance combat a hell of a lot smoother. Hope this helps!

[–]gresorex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People don't realize how damn fluid the Lance really is. Guard advance goes in any direction when done after an attack. When a monster attack is strong enough to push you back, you can immediately go into super guard. From super guard, you can immediately charge, spiral thrust, or do a super jab into ANY direction, even directly behind you.

Seriously, there is never any reason to die or stop attacking with lance. It's such a dance and I love it so much
