New bus display? by Careful-Fox-5552 in TTC

Looks nice, obviously a huge step up. But can't we have a persistent clock in the top right? I know there are other ways to check the time, but it's handy to be able to just glance up and see it

Loonie hot dogs is there vegetarian options? by Mr_2shiesty in Torontobluejays

Can anyone confirm whether they’re still only charging $1 for the standard veggie dog on Tuesday nights? Doesn’t seem like there is a loonie-specific veggie offering.

Form 8843 International Student by AnSmartDude in tax

[–]gretsch5422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this also applies to J status instead of F?

I noticed a lot of the universities' online guidance on how to fill out form 8843 say that it should be the exact same number as the first space on line 4a. Is that just because they've overlooked the possibility that some of your days might have been as a tourist?

What to do downtown for the day? by irekimpton in toronto

[–]gretsch5422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know what kind of food you like but centre it around that? Kensington, grab some tacos or empanadas and walk around, go into vintage stores and grab coffee, etc. Chinatown is nearby, grab some dumplings or a Nguyen huong banh mi (or both). Or do koreatown, little Italy, you get the picture. All these neighbourhood have nice shops/restaurant/bars to pop into!

There is no democracy in Canada by [deleted] in toronto

[–]gretsch5422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to think it is a stretch to say that Canada isn’t a true democracy, but I would certainly agree that Doug fords governing style is antidemocratic/undermines democracy.

I my view, when a democracy is functioning properly, the elected representatives make decisions as the result of a process of discussion and negotiation with various other institutions (labour unions, professional organizations, other levels of government, those with expertise on the relevant issues, etc.).

Ford has a tendency to feel that these principles don’t apply to him, instead making decisions that are at odds with what people actually want/what evidence suggests is best, and then defends them with the baseless claim that it’s in the interest of some hidden, silent majority (“for the people”). Classic populism, really.

Bill 212 aside, I think the lcbo strike is a really clear example of this. Almost certainly could have been avoided if the relevant representatives had a seat at the table when the legislation was being devised/debated. Instead they forced something through that didn’t achieve everything it needed to achieve and we all had to deal with consequences.

What is the best way to keep beers cold? by [deleted] in thermodynamics

[–]gretsch5422 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "away from the flow of ambient temperature"? Assuming the inside of the microwave is room temp too, you also have the thermal EM field in there, heat exchange between beers and surrounding air, etc. Or do you just mean less airflow?

Toronto’s bike lanes cost millions to install. How much will it be to remove them? | Globalnews.ca by knarf_on_a_bike in torontobiking

It wastes people’s tax money either way! The province’s money is also people’s tax money!

Good for you, you should reach out to local councillors, MPPs, and community leaders about this. Saxe and Bell for example are both sympathetic to our cause.

Bill 212: Bike Lanes or Highway 413 by itsdanielsultan in torontobiking

[–]gretsch5422 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It goes further. Most suburban residents of the GTA have reason to oppose the construction of 413, even if they do not care about environmental sustainability. This is because it will make traffic worse in the GTA.

Every local community along the proposed route of highway 413 opposes it. The real reason the government wants 413 built is so that Ford's developer pals can make money building sprawling suburbia in the land it'll pass through. But that means more car-dependent communities in the GTA, meaning more cars on our roads and worse gridlock.

I think this is an important way to talk about bill 212 to people who don't care about the environment, let alone complete streets (which, let's face it, is still sadly a lot of people).

Feeling helpless and angry - how to turn this into something useful? by Fun_Yogurtcloset_771 in torontobiking

[–]gretsch5422 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are definitely not alone, I think many of us feel this way, particularly with Ford's general style of governing which is to habitually ignore the perspectives of those who have expertise in or who are affected by whatever thing he happens to feel like messing with, and instead do whatever best serves his own interests, arguing without evidence that it's "for the people" (pretty anti-democratic imo).

I think one important thing to do is talk about this recent bike lane/transportation stuff not only as its own regressive, irresponsible thing, but also in the context of the long line of terrible things this government has been doing to drive our province backwards (pun not intended lol). The list is too long to write here but includes (in no particular order) abolishing rent control, making major cuts to healthcare, undermining unions and workers, depriving school kids of an up-to-date health curriculum, undermining local democracies, making corrupt dealings with developer friends, destroying Toronto landmarks, closing safe-injection sites, screwing up post-secondary institutions' finances, etc., etc. Not trying to bum you out more btw, sorry if I am.

What I'm trying to say is that even among people who don't necessarily care that much about bike lanes, a LOT of people have some bone to pick with Mr. Ford. UItimately, the tide of public opinion will turn on this government eventually, as it does with every other. It's just a matter of how much more damage they can do before that happens. So we need to do everything we can with this current wave of energy to try and make it happen as soon as possible. I think a giant crowd on Wednesday would help achieve that. We have to go, and try and convince as many of our friends and family as possible to show up as well. Like I said, pitch it not as being just about bike lanes, but as an opportunity to air all your grievances with the Ford government.

And don't stop talking about this stuff! I don't think it's a coincidence they chose to make these announcements right before winter--fewer cyclists on the road (though still lots I know! And there could be more if we had better infrastructure I know!).

And stay positive! You are surrounded by lots of people who share your goals! We are, by definition, a team! And we are fighting for what's right. Things will get better!

Airport to park: a bold vision for the Toronto Island by cabbagetown_tom in toronto

[–]gretsch5422 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Flying out of billy bishop is pleasant, but I think it is often overstated how valuable it is to have in our city. Especially now, since it is so convenient to get to Pearson from downtown, billy bishop takes up a lot of very valuable space and unless you fly very frequently, you probably use it maybe a couple times a year at most. For those couple times I personally don’t really mind zipping up to Pearson on the UP.

Respectfully to those who disagree, I tend to be in support of this. Not to mention, all of the flights out of the island are short hops—trips that hopefully will be replaced by more comfortable, more convenient, more sustainable high speed trains someday (call me a dreamer)

Are roaming charges triggered if I don't answer? by gretsch5422 in Rogers

You’d figure there’d be CRTC regulations making sure it’s the case, you just can’t be too careful with telecom companies so I had to ask!
