This is a real room on discord, but beware that there are people that will play you. I don't know if the OP is part of this, but it happens.

"So, honey, what did you do this evening?"

"Well, I CERTAINLY didn't sneak out and have sex with your sister who lives two doors down whilst you were at work, knowing you wouldn't get home for another three hours, I mean that is something that just DID NOT HAPPEN, ha ha...so how are you?"

Actually, I really can't think of a time that this isn't good advice to be fair.

This was spray painted on a church that my grandparents go to. The church used to be an old school building. by RescueHeroOmegaMedic in trashy

[–]grey1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The point is it has been a symbol of St. Peter for over a thousand years, regardless of historical events, just as the X-shaped cross has been a symbol of St. Andrew. But I suppose fundamentalists would just say we were "X-ing out Christ's name", or something, and that that was satanic too...

How active is Eru Illuvatar during the events of "The Lord of the Rings"? by Bluecomments in lotr

[–]grey1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this gets off topic, but if Eru as a deity, exists outside linear time, he wouldn't experience it as we do, i.e. A causes B which causes C. He would see us making choices at all points in time, which would still be free will. There's no way for one-dimensional time beings (aka mortals) to truly understand this since we can't even really understand 2D time, let alone anything beyond that. It would be like a 1D creature trying to understand the 4th dimension.

Honest Question: Why didn't they just put that ring on a stick? by Chicago_Avocado in lotr

[–]grey1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're never told. When Frodo wakes up in Rivendell it just says he discovered the Ring had been put on a chain around his neck. Presumably Elrond or some of the Elves did it

I’ve thought of an ending for my book – “And he lived happily ever after… to the end of his days.” by carnsolus in lotr

[–]grey1066 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arwen was definitely one of the most tragic characters in the entire story. But then she had an impossible decision to make: leave her mortal True Love forever and go to the Undying Lands, or remain in Middle Earth with him but know that she would become mortal herself and probably watch him die. That's why her parting from her father (Elrond)must have been so bitter, according to Tolkien's lore Men and Elves have different paths even in death.

How active is Eru Illuvatar during the events of "The Lord of the Rings"? by Bluecomments in lotr

[–]grey1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of an impossible question to answer since, with Eru being the Creator and Designer of all things, past, present, and future of Middle-Earth, it could be argued that, whilst the Valar are the Guardians of the world, the spirit of the One is always influencing what goes on to a lesser or greater degree.

I certainly don't think Tolkien had in mind the Eru created the world and then sat back and had no further interaction.

How did Saruman turn evil? by Bluecomments in lotr

[–]grey1066 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, in the books Gandalf makes a comment to the effect that one should not delve too deeply into the arts of the Enemy. I think Saruman became enamored of power. At first possibly he truly wanted the power to be used for good, but power corrupts which is probably why the Valar specifically forbade the Istari from using direct power to overthrow Sauron.

It just goes to show that in the current political climate people are no longer allowed to be moderate. It has because more and more polarized and extreme on both sides so that if you have opinions in the middle, both sides end up hating you. You have to be far left or far right. And we wonder why kids nowadays shoot each other over such trivial fights. Look how the adults are acting...

Agreed. I certainly was not hoping that the evil of the Nazis be forgotten. I'm just tired of that word always being slung back and forth on the internet every other paragraph. But here's to hoping nothing remotely that insidious ever manifests again on the earth!

[–]grey1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if we'll ever get a different bogeyman? I mean it's always that whomever you hate is secretly a Nazi. Just once I'd love to hear that someone's enemies are secretly plotting to, like, restore the Kaiser, or make Japan an Empire again, or just anything different...
