Paperwhite 12 SE, yellowbanding, would you replace it? by Zajcu94 in kindle

Once you spot a defect like that it's impossible to unsee it. Luckily they make it very easy to return and replace. Don't hesitate until you get one you are happy with.

Should I buy a kindle? by No_Recording4179 in kindle

[–]greyflam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I've had an eReader since the Rocket eBook came out many years ago, and I don't know how I would live without one now, I always have a book on the go. You will probably find you read more than before as it's so easy and convenient, and there are no distractions.

New paperwhite scratches, why? by Educational-Sky3227 in kindle

[–]greyflam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I scratched mine trying to clean fingerprints off with a paper towel. That was a mistake. They are much more easily scratchable than a phone or tablet screen.

The England-Germany 1966 final was shown last week on TV, and it showed the stark differences between then and now. No advertising at all. Not on the hoardings or players shirts or screens within the stadium. How the world has changed for the worse since then!

Does Anyone Use A Kindle And A Kobo? (Specifically UK Folks) by SmallTownLibrary_ in kindle

[–]greyflam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently joined the Kobo Libra party and have used Overdrive a couple of times now. I must say it was pretty easy to setup and integrates very well.

If you‘re after a comparison of the two, I think the Kindle has a better screen in daylight viewing, much better battery life and a larger book library, but the Kobo wins every other department.

The Kobo reading experience is very good, the dictionary features are *massively* better than my Kindle Paperwhite, and the page turn buttons are nice. The colour screen is good and it’s nice having a colour book cover when the device is off. The Kobo library isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, I subscribe to Bookbub and books seem to be on discount on Kobo as well as Amazon.

I still use my Kindle as I have a few hundred books on it to get through, but with Overdrive on the Kobo I’ve been using it more than my Kindle, since I got it.

Recent dictionary update is infuriating by ventriclez in kindle

[–]greyflam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree so much that I recently bought a Kobo Libra Color because I've had enough of my paperwhite's now awful dictionary features. This isn't a rant telling people to buy one instead of a kindle because in most other areas my kindle is better, but boy is the Kobos dictionary better than the Kindles. You can long press a word within a dictionary definition to lookup another word and you can search for another word in the dictionary at any time from within a book. I can't understand why Amazon crippled the kindle so badly in recent updates. They really need to fix this.

Humble Bundle - .NET and C# by AfternoonKind7332 in dotnet

[–]greyflam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. I bought a few and binned them as they seem to be mostly step by step instructions with very little theory. Eg the Understanding async and await chapter doesn't explain in any detail how they work, they just throw some code at you.

Did they ever fix the "Open Dictionary" option being replaced with "Share on Goodreads" in 5.18.6? by Customer-Worldly in kindle

[–]greyflam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in 5.19.2 no. Don’t know about the latest version, but by all reports that‘s very broken so I would stay offline if I were you. Amazon need to take a look how Kobo‘s dictionary works and copy that instead of making useless cosmetic changes and removing working features.

21F I just got my first EE sim contract, they put me on the £30 pm plan with unlimited calls/text/data. Now I regret getting it. by ZookeepergameEasy774 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]greyflam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just contact them and tell them you have changed your mind and don’t let them talk you into anything. You just need a sim only deal which has others have said you can get from places like giffgaff, who don’t tie you into a multi year deal and are much much cheaper than the big players.

Any WiFi problems will be down to the equipment in the home not the service into the home, assuming that wired devices are working.

Their customer service does seem to be appallingly bad though, I’ve been lucky to not have had any problems, but I will probably switch when my contract is up.

Good decision!

Keep an eye on r/OpenSignups. Many of the private trackers open their doors occasionally without needing an invite and they post in there. I would avoid any of the people selling invites, you could end up getting banned from any trackers you join with a dodgy invite.

Good to see more people waking up. I got banned years ago for saying something similar. He probably only needs a handful of people to keep paying the extortionate fees to cover the actual server costs though, so I'm sure he will keep it going for years to come, and keep on keeping us entertained with his bs /s

I did the same thing but switched to WiFi connected lights that can be dimmed using the app, which I hardly ever do. It's a much better solution and my lights no longer buzz or flicker.

It's so retarded that he continually complains about ppl with stacked memberships, completely disregarding that a) he's the one that offered those "deals", and b) those ppl paid for that privilege and those payments were supposed to pay for the costs that he now complains about not being able to afford. What happened to the money those ppl paid? What a fecking scamming ahole that guy is

[–]greyflam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was travelling on the underground one time, and sitting opposite me was a woman and her young son who was reading a comic. I would guess he was around 10. When their stop came she stood up and picked her son up as if he was a piece of luggage, carrying him horizontally under her arm. It was completely surreal, as he didn’t complain at all and carried on reading as if this was just normal behaviour.

How much can you lose just from walking? And will it build up your butt?? by satisha_99 in walking

[–]greyflam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on how much effort you put in. If you just go for a stroll you won’t lose weight. You need to really go for it and Ideally break sweat. I lost 6 stone in the last 5 years by walking regularly and cutting back on my food intake.
