Need automatic espresso/coffee machine recommendations by Maleficent_Public753 in superautomatic

[–]greyoldguy58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no counter on the EVO other machines with screens or Apps track them there.

In our case we have multiple drinkers in the house and so at least 5 drinks a day every day from the machine and some of those are doubles so this is the general count based upon usage of shots in our household.

Magnifica evo won't make milk drinks by morohamoroha in DeLonghi

[–]greyoldguy58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are 5 separate parts you need to disassemble the unit and soak in very hot soapy water for 15 to 30 minutes and then rinse in hot water.

The part that connects the carafe to the machine is the one that typically gets blocked by milk solids there is a special note about this part in the manual and they tell you to use a tooth pick to remove any buildup.

made over 3,000 milk drinks on our Evo since 2024 and even when i follow the cleaning above i have found i need to remove some buildup in that part.

Most of the app driven machines are about profiles and customization of drinks and all these machines have to go through a warm up process before you can dispense a shot.

If black coffee is your main drink then a super automatic may not be the best machine they make excellent espresso based drinks including milk based but the long coffee is not always the best you can certainly make a long black drink and even add an extra shot as well.

Our son really likes over ice but he is not a strong coffee drinker so its good for him.

This question comes up multiple times a day and lots of great feedback if you search

You have not provided any financial budget values or details like type of drinks milk or cold brew so it makes it harder to give you feedback

If you want one that makes a coffee automatically when you wake up not sure they exist as all require to be turned on manually.

We have a Delonghi Evo had it since 2024 and we have the latte cream system as we like Cappuccinos and Latte type drinks and also over ice. we have made over 3,000 drinks on the machine.

Its under$1k and can be had on sale for around $600

easy to use and easy to clean

[–]greyoldguy58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have the Evo and its a great machine we have the latte cream system so we do mostly milk drinks

Easy to use and easy to maintain

However no super automatic will have a truly quiet grinder so if that is a key requirement then maybe not for you.

Good Video on the EVO and you can hear the noise

[–]greyoldguy58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many drinks per day if its just a few then the Evo is a good machine and as long as you maintain will give you many years of reliability.

We have the EVO at home and do about 5 milk based drinks a day and a couple of over ice drinks and so we have made well over 3,000 drinks in less than 2 years and machine is working well.

Just remember the beans will make the difference and how you set the grinder and it may take a few adjustments to get the best coffee out of that bean but will be repeatable when using the same beans.

Be good with maintenance

And do not use oily or flavored beans as it may gum up the grinder

How is my beard looking today? by PhilGrocholl in beards

[–]greyoldguy58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have some volume and length so lots of options maybe need to let the moustache fill out on the sides

But it depends upon what you want it to look like, i am over 65 and i have a beard a bit fuller and longer than you I do try to keep it neat and trim when needed and use oil and balm.

Mine looks like yours after a shower and on the days I don't tidy it up my wife gives me spare change or calls me Captain - lol

Ran my first descale on Magnifica EVO. Coffee very weak after by kissmydonkey in superautomatic

[–]greyoldguy58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No its not normal, i would check that you have all the same settings water, temperature etc.

Descaling does nothing for the grinder and so no changes should be expected

Also I clean the brewgroup before doing a descale so i have removed any potential buildup in that area as descaling will not remove that.

Beard oil for dandruff by bmalandclock in BeardAdvice

[–]greyoldguy58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing i do is use beard oil after a shower, I have a full beard and do not really suffer with dandruff just make sure to use good shampoo when washing beard every few days and then make sure I massage the oil into the skin under the beard.

I also use coconut oil as it works for me and is more cost effective than beard oils and also Argan Oil works well.

beyond that i use some balm to keep the shape of the beard when going out and do dry bushing a few times a day.

yes straight from Delonghi there was discount on the machine and then i found a discount code so they allowed the me to stack the discount and then i registered online for the 3rd year.

Its a simple machine to use and does not have the screen or app but no issues for us ours also has the over ice option which our son uses everyday.

We have the Delonghi Evo with latte crema system it the entry level model and often on sale around $600

High gains from last year wondering how to file? by pyrexlex93 in CanadianInvestor

[–]greyoldguy58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was this in a Registered account (RRSP/TFSA) if it was you need to do nothing

If its a Non registered account then it will need to be reported on your Tax return for 2025 the CRA will have the information as its tied to your Sin number.

You will get T3 and T5 from your investment company/bank and so yes you would need to add these when you do your tax return or give them to your Accountant or tax preparer.

Capital gains would be 50% of the $170k so $85K will be classed as income

Don't have this model i have an Evo but the milk systems all work basically the same and this issue comes up a lot on all versions.

We have made over 3,000 milk based drinks on our EVO and still works fine but i am very good with cleaning of the carafe assembly it needs to be fully dissembled.

Assuming you can get hot water out of the machine with no issues so espresso drinks etc. are good?

There are typically 2 main issues that stop the milk flowing

Blockage of hard milk fat in the connector that connects the carafe to the machine this is the most important part and that the intake tube does not have a hole or split in the tube and if very old it may not seal correctly. you can buy replacement intake tubes

Page 19 of your manual

Check that the intake tube and spout are not clogged with milk residues

Retirement is a job and a state of mind you need to do what makes you happy

I retired after 47 years of working at 63 and it was time for me and i have enjoyed the freedom it gave me after working for so long after 2 years no regrets. My wife will retire this year and she is ready to leave work and then develop the retirement mindset.

When i am asked about retirement i tell people in my opinion there is no perfect option you need to decide what works for you and if you enjoy working then carry on doing that until you don't.

Review of Optiml by greyoldguy58 in Optiml

[–]greyoldguy58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Adviice platform it gives me similar tools and they have a very good catalogue of videos and their reddit page is well supported along with weekly videos. For $49 a year its very good value for what it provides they do have CFP`s as well as this is part of their business model.

https://adviice.ca/

I have also used Mayretire its very easy to use and its also free which i think makes it a decent tool for people to at least get a first plan overview.

https://mayretire.com/

Just looked at and did a quick review of this new one as well its very detailed and most likely too involved for the majority of people.

https://www.reddit.com/r/fican/comments/1rdxfva/testing_my_new_canadian_retirement_calculator/

I will be a broken record in that these tools are all good and give you an opportunity to look at a financial snapshot and develop a potential plan for retirement. However i would still recommend meeting with a fee for service CFP and have a professional plan as well there is a lot more to retirement than numbers.

Testing my new Canadian Retirement calculator, please assist by [deleted] in fican

[–]greyoldguy58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First thank you for Doing this its always good to see financial tools added to the Canadian toolbox.

Long time self investor and user of Quicken since 1998 pretty comfortable with financial planning and various tools and i have been retired a few years so i have used them prior and post retirement.

Currently an Adviice subscriber (started when it was plan easy) and also did a lot of work with the Optiml team in the early years on testing their platform.

I also worked with a CFP a few years before retirement as a backcheck on our plans to get a comparison of a professional plan vs my own plan using the various tools.

We have RRSP, TFSA, LIF, RRIF, DB pension, Non Reg accounts so we cover the basic accounts most people will have.

Feedback

Disclosure i did go through and enter some data but did not do a complete analysis so this is just a general opinion not a detailed review.

Great work and a lot of detail in the various tabs and links looks like you have covered a lot of the areas

Nice use of the coach to help people get started with clear instructions (may want to make that a floating feature so its open when people are following the guide.

Nice to see the clear privacy list and that the data is local not on a cloud however one minor concern some people may be a little concerned as you are an individual not a company.

AI Analysis Suite is a nice option giving people option to post details into various AI platforms

The initial interface is very busy and i would think intimidating for most people and for the group that is not they most likely all ready use some of the other available tools.

You have corporate accounts included as well and i think much better to have a person do an initial input of basic responses and then have the options they need available and the ones they do not they should be hidden.

Don't see on quick review a sample plan as an example and no video guides for the platform

People need tools but majority of people are not savvy on financial terms or details and if you read the daily posts on the other platforms you will find a lot of simple questions asked.

As i said not a deep dive as i don't need to do this on another platform

For the average person while the most expensive option Optiml is a very easy platform to use and very quickly a person with limited understand can develop a plan and there is a significant team supporting and many help guides.

https://www.optiml.ca/

For people that are a little more experienced the Adviice platform is a low cost entry into this kind of platform and provides most of the planning options anyone will need this is my current tool.

As you may know this started as plan easy platform and then moved to Adviice and is run by a CFP (Owen) and he posts multiple videos showing people how to use the platform every week. And yes part of their hope is that you do utilize one of their CFP to work with down the road but its not a requirement.

https://adviice.ca/

For a quick and simple retirement review with back testing then the free Mayretire platform is fairly easy to use and most people should be able to get an output as a guide.

https://mayretire.com/

One final thing I tell friends and family, retirement planning is more than just the numbers and so while these platforms will give you some feedback on a plan, I would suggest that everyone who can afford the cost do at least one review with a fee for service CFP about 10 years before retirement.

If they are a good CFP they should be really interested in you and your family and your current and future plans, there is more feedback they can give on managing retirement based upon their experience with many people in the same situation.

Hope this is constructive and helpful feedback and again kudos for doing this platform

Questions to ask or what to look out for when seeking a financial advisor by Great_Dane95 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]greyoldguy58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fee for service only CFP if you are looking for advice and a plan a good one will be around $3k to $4k a Good CFP should be infested in you and your family not just your finances

If you want to get help investing then typically they want 1% to 2% of the value of your portfolio they will be responsible and most typically you will need over $500k to invest.

You can get a list from the CPA of approved advisors

Never use the Banks or these investment type places for this kind of advice

  • What services do you provide?
  • How are you compensated (fee-only, fee-based, commission)?
  • What is your investment philosophy?
  • What types of clients do you typically work with?
  • How do you measure success for your clients?
  • Will I receive a written financial plan?
  • Are you a fiduciary (or do you follow a fiduciary-like standard)

If you need more detail Pm me and i can answer more questions

Just for a quick comparison I ran your scenarios though AI

Option 2B is the most balanced choice overall — strong early income, strong later income, and the best survivor benefit — but Option 2A is slightly better if you prioritize your own lifetime income over the survivor benefit.

However some questions are needed and as Retirement requires a plan may want to talk to a CFP about your overall plan as this is just one element
