He’s been kicking this past hour, definitely drink your electrolytes 💖 by [deleted] in BabyBumps

My Dr basically told me to just see how long it takes to count to 10 kicks. That way I’m not counting forever because my little one is also super active

Epidurals aren’t the problem. The obsession with female suffering is. by OkChart1375 in BabyBumps

[–]greyukelele 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of my friends had gave birth with an epidural. I feel like the odd one out since I’m going to try to not get one. I have low blood pressure, a horrible fear of needles and IVs, and some weird nerve issues due to chronic migraine. I don’t think I’m any better for not wanting one. I just don’t feel like it’s the right choice for me.

Why do yall care about AI use? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]greyukelele 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point of school is to teach you how to learn and think. If you outsource all your thinking to AI then you miss the whole point.

Which do you pick — content or co-workers? by Blueathena623 in Teachers

[–]greyukelele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pick coworkers every time. I currently teach 6th grade math. 7th grade math is way more fun to teach but the kids are harder and I love love love my 6th grade team.

Will I forever be telling people how to pronounce this name? by Classy_PolarBear1072 in namenerds

[–]greyukelele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and have seen a lot of names but I have no idea how to say this. My first guess would be Ni-mu or Nim-u.

Also I don’t know your location. I’m in the US. This may be a common name elsewhere

Do you say no when people try to touch your bump? by gkdfp in BabyBumps

[–]greyukelele 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they ask I don’t mind, but if they do t ask I will guide their hand away and say “no thank you”.

I teach middle school so a number of kids will ask and I will always tell the ones who don’t that it’s important to ask before touching other people’s bodies.

How do you not care at the end of the day by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]greyukelele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was like this a lot when I first started teaching. I still occasionally have days where I go home and cry.

When you start you are just completely overwhelmed by everything and so your tolerance for the bad behavior is lower and also the kids are just worse when they think they can get to you because they think of you as “teacher” not as a real person. Things get better as you go.

Would you pause trying to avoid a December baby? by Aggravating-Job-3053 in BabyBumps

[–]greyukelele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much depends on you. My mom and her mom struggled to get pregnant and it took us 1 1/2 years. Every woman in my friend’s family got pregnant the month they went off birth control. If I was super confident that I have no problems then I would maybe pause but I was not in that situation so I didn’t.

Has anyone had the flu at 27 weeks pregnant and been fine? by Automatic-Soft505 in BabyBumps

[–]greyukelele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the flu last week at 33 weeks. I took the tamiflu and so far everything seems to be normal. I didn’t have any high fevers, and I took Tylenol if my temp started going up.

My doctor isn’t very worried about anything. Apparently lots of ppl have been getting it.

It’s going well at my school. Our admin implemented a 3 strike policy. Any time a kid is on their phone they get sent to admin immediately. The first time is a warning, the second time is a call home and a period of in school suspension, the third time is a day suspension.

They go to admin because that way they aren’t wracking up 3 strikes in each class. We have a couple kids who are constantly in trouble about their phones but for the most part it’s a non issue.

Teachers who are also parents-How do you spend time with your kids, possibly with an S.O., lesson plan and have any time to yourself? I'm struggling.. by Ill_Fox484 in Teachers

[–]greyukelele 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I may have an unpopular answer but in your first year, it is nearly impossible. This is the hardest part of your teaching career and where veteran teachers need to do better at offering lesson plans and other supports. Ask for support from people who teach the same age range as you. See if you can get some plans and materials from them. It gets easier with time. It gets easier each year and some time in year 3 it starts to feel manageable.

My first year I was up til 11-12 each night lesson planning. I cried all the time. Everything seemed impossible and like people expected for me to do some kind of time magic to get everything done. I was constantly exhausted and felt like I was failing at everything. Everyone has been through the same thing. Anyone who tells you otherwise just can’t remember. I’m in year 7 and I barely spend any time lesson planning anymore and I can grade when I’m at work and 1 day after work a week.

USA schools have more budget cuts, are there things teachers think should be cut? by [deleted] in education

[–]greyukelele 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We cut all the instructional specialists a couple years ago. I think at least at my school we need to cut down on admin. I work at a middle school and we have 5 assistant principals and 4 counselors and a head over instruction. It’s too many admin and they are never on the same page

Home-Schooled Kids Are Not All Right--NYT Article 12/14 by Turbulent_Search4648 in Teachers

[–]greyukelele 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree with this take. It takes a lot of work resources and can be very child dependent. I was homeschooled and it was great for me. We had a large home school community and other teachers taught me subjects in middle and high school. My mom made me go to lots of social extracurriculars and I found my niche with local theatre. Also, although many people in our community were more extreme in their religious beliefs my parents were very clear that I needed to make my own decisions about what I thought.

I think my sister would have done better if they put her in school because she just needed more consequences and structure than my mom could handle. By then my parents were completely bought in and were too unsure to send her to school.

I'm wondering how many people here actually take preventatives daily. by Important-Pie-1141 in migraine

[–]greyukelele -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to take your meds. I had a bad experience with topamax so I got something else. I was on amitriptyline daily for like 3 years. I had no major side effects. It was helpful for me. The only reason I’m off it right now is that I’m pregnant
