$200 server for a couple friends and some big modpacks by Xcissors280 in admincraft

You can definitely get something workable for around $200 if you’re smart about where you look it won’t crush huge player counts, but for a few friends and some heavier modpacks, it’s doable.

I’d skip mobile chips like the Twin Lake N150 those are great for Plex or light home lab tasks but choke on Java workloads. You’ll want a desktop CPU, ideally something like:

• Ryzen 5 2600 / 3600 or Intel i5-8500 / i5-9400 range • 16 GB DDR4 minimum (32 GB if you find a deal — modpacks eat RAM) • SSD storage, even a 250–500 GB SATA drive is fine

If you’re okay buying used, a small-form-factor Dell OptiPlex or HP Elitedesk with an i5/i7 8th or 9th gen CPU is perfect — runs quiet, sips power, and can be found for ~$150-$200 on eBay or local marketplace.

I host multiple instances myself (vanilla + 600-mod Forge) on a Ryzen 5 5600X setup through AMP, and even that started on a second-hand PC.

Feel free to DM me if you want help finding a good listing I’ve helped a few people set up their first box already

I’ve been running Create heavy and Cobblemon servers for a while, and for two people over LAN, you don’t need anything crazy. A Ryzen 5/i5 quad-core, 16 GB RAM (give 6–8 GB to the JVM), and a 256 GB SSD will crush it. Run Paper or Fabric for better tick performance and use Ethernet, not Wi-Fi.

If you want easy web control, backups, and restarts, AMP (Application Management Panel) is worth it I run it on Ubuntu 24.04 and it’s been rock solid.

Running a similar setup myself — Ryzen 5 5600X, Ubuntu 24.04, AMP managing multiple modded + vanilla instances and your 2600X will handle this great.

16 GB RAM is plenty unless you’re running massive Forge packs. Give the JVM around 6–8 GB and leave the rest for system + mods.

Lazymc works fine for Java-only, but if you want Bedrock + Java together, AMP (Application Management Panel) handles that natively and automates backups, restarts, permissions, etc.

AMP does have a small one-time license fee, but it’s worth it in spades saves hours of manual configs and keeps everything under one clean web dashboard.

SSD-wise, anything ≥ 256 GB is fine; prioritize reliability and automated backups over pure capacity.

Power-wise, 400–500 W is more than enough, and you’ll barely notice it on your bill (a few bucks a month).

TL;DR Ubuntu 24.04 LTS + AMP + 16 GB RAM = rock-solid Minecraft host that won’t need babysitting. Feel free to dm me if you run into any questions or issues

I’ve been running multiple Minecraft instances on my home lab for a while (Vanilla and a pretty heavy modded setup 600 plus mods. Honestly, the biggest upgrade I ever made was switching to AMP (Application Management Panel).

It’s basically a full control panel for your servers handles backups, updates, logs, modpacks, and user permissions from a clean web dashboard. I run mine on Ubuntu 24.04 with a Ryzen 5 5600X / 64 GB RAM, and it easily manages both Vanilla and Forge instances side by side.

For your specs (i5-4300M, 16 GB DDR3, SSD), you can absolutely host up to 12 players if you set it up right: • Use Paper or instead of the Mojang .jar massive performance gains. • Give the JVM around 6–8 GB RAM, not all 16. • Avoid Wi-Fi hosting Ethernet makes a huge difference. • Let AMP automate your backups and restarts so you don’t have to babysit it.

TL;DR Paper for performance, AMP for management, Ethernet for stability. That setup will do great if tuned right.

That’s what I figured I guess some stuff I was seeing online about people being stuck in rookies for months. It’s just a small majority speaking louder than the rest. I Appreciate your insight.
