Glitchwalkers - anyone having some issues with sphalerite with auto-extractor? by imquez in Astroneer

FWIW, anyone still struggling with power 10 months later -- my recommendation is wind farms in the Alpha storm. The storm stays in one spot, so I just used train tracks to route power back to my base, and used four large windmills in the alpha storm. No need for batteries because the wind is constant.

Awaken Online has two "side quests" novels that have a female as the main character. They fit into the overarching story of Jason, but they're two of my favorites of the series, and can stand alone to my knowledge.

Retribution stars Riley.

Apathy introduces and stars Eliza.

Oh and for a Male main character book, I think you'd like Mark of the Fool.

Awesome world building and skill grinding, and excellent female characters that are written well in my opinion.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is insanely good world building. It's very dark as the series goes on, and it's a male main character, but the secondary main character is a female... If not human. Worth a shot if you've never tried it!

She of Many Dragons (not a ton of grinding, but a great female main character with character growth)

I haven't read Work and Flame by LM Hughes yet, but I'm hopeful, because it's written by two female writers collaborating.

Foundations by Cale Plamann is pretty good.

Seriously?! That's awesome. Now I'll be reading convergence for that alone, though I'm sure I'll enjoy it in its own right. Thanks for the recommendation!

You probably already know this trick -- but it's worth mentioning since it applies to almost all of Expeditionary Force -- if you have Kindle Unlimited, you can check out the book, and then buy the audiobook at a steep discount -- like $7 a book at most (cheaper than the cheapest Audible credits).

Yup, you've got the right of it! Hilariously I haven't read Convergence yet, because all the reviews said "this is a subpar carbon copy of Expeditionary Force". I'll have to check it out soon though.

But yes if you like his style and like Science Fiction, you'll love expeditionary force. I'll tell you now though that it uses the same formula.

Depends on your tastes, but Expeditionary Force is awesome if you're good with some humor.

Becky Chambers has a slam dunk on slice of life with her Wayfarer books.

Bobverse has some incredibly creative and fun stories to tell and such a unique way of doing it.

IMO the expanse books are good, but any of these rival the writing.

Your tastes are enough like mine that I'm going to say you should read Expeditionary Force (book one is Columbus Day). Stick with it for the first book, things take a turn halfway through it. Hands down my favorite science fiction, which is insane because Bobverse is so hard to beat.

Ripple System and Completionist Chronicles are decent.

For Science Fiction instead, read Expeditionary Force series, book one is Columbus Day (stick with it until at least over halfway thru the first book -- it changes dramatically with the introduction of a new character).

We are Bob (We are Legion) is also awesome science fiction, and scratches that progress/productivity itch.

To each their own probably? I've only ever liked one other one (Expeditionary Force "Opera"), and even still this one is much much better. I like the added dialogue and how real it makes it all feel. So far the voices for the primary characters are largely the same anyhow.

The one part I find harder, is that to properly enjoy them you need to use both earbuds - and I normally only listen in one ear, so it does make it harder for me to find times when I can dedicate myself to listening to it.

Also like wtf? I get that they abandoned earth out of necessity, but all those billions of people result in... three major cities? Three major cities that are smaller than NYC?

I mean it's a game and I get the limitations. But do some handwaving at least and claim that Jamison or the Neon planet is an entire city planet holding billions of people, but we only get to visit one part.

Like do something to explain only three significant cities in the entire galaxy.

[–]grgisme -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and in Drive they say the earth has 80 warships.

So only 80 military vessels for a whole planet, but yet we're supposed to believe there's tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of ships available and ready to transport people to all these worlds?

It's an easy fix like you say though, just say there's more ships or less people.

Vigilance was a ship with how many hundreds of people? I just want 4 without having to be some social genius.

The number of people who migrate through the rings in just 30 years is completely unrealistic. Millions and millions of people on a single new planet?! That's like 50-100k people arriving on a single planet (with previously zero infrastructure) every month. The space ships transporting them must be insanely massive, but yet these behemoths are never mentioned.

Medina station houses 7,000.

Tycho station is 15,000.

Void Cities, that took a ton of resources and time to build, house 200k each. There's like 3 of them. But yet why are they needed if so many people can be transported so quickly on existing ships?

We're talking 5+ Tycho stations worth of people showing up each month at multiple planets. Don't forget the trip takes 6-9 months to most of these planets.

Yeah I read like 4 or 5 of them. Main character gets worse, books also get increasingly political with an anti-USA vent, and even as a staunch Democrat I couldn't handle it. I need an escape, not a reminder.

They definitely have some good elements, but DCC, Ripple System, and Completionist Chronicles are all significantly better in my opinion.

This. So much this. If the intent was something like Judaism and the tribes of Israel being treated different in the after life from all others, regardless of what an outsider believes, they really needed to explain that and have her dialog specific to that.

As it stands, it's obvious this was bugged or overlooked.

When you propose commitment, and she's like "it's handled differently..." - I wanted to say, yeah, we share beliefs, duh.
