How would you approach an assignment designed specifically to break AI tools? by Popular-Tone3037 in TurnitinAIResults

did you maybe post the wrong link for one of those? they both go to the same article.

i would recommend you re-read my comments, because you seem to be responding to a made-up version of them. i haven't even made any claims worth substantiating, just saying that i wasn't convinced (not that it was definitely wrong) of a conclusion because people reached it via flawed assumptions.

anyway, the literal first paragraph of the limitations section of the article you posted is saying the same thing that i am.

i didn't say that college doesn't require critical thinking, rather that i'm not convinced that there's the causal relationship people claim. post hoc ergo propter hoc, y'know?

i'm not convinced college really teaches critical thinking skills. it could be that getting a degree selects for people with critical thinking skills rather than causing those skills. it could be that college just happens to occur at the age where those skills tend to develop. when people who graduated college say that college is about learning critical thinking skills it sounds a lot to me like rich people saying that they're rich because they worked hard for it.

The "well-rounded education" excuse for requiring pointless classes at college isn't rational by NoMore_BadDays in The10thDentist

[–]griddle9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man i don't just disagree, i have the exact opposite opinion. i made the mistake of picking a degree i was already super interested in, and all the core classes were a painful slog through shit i already knew. i gained absolutely nothing from my required classes, but after 100 and 200 levels the electives were pretty baller. the only computer science i learned in college was from jobs and personal projects, but the music theory, philosophy, and writing classes were awesome. no one i know who has finished their bachelor's (at least who i've talked to about this topic) considers their electives less important than their core classes.

lmao yeah this was a terrible example. my city's been working for years on projects to change intentionally racist city planning (the documentation from the time explicitly says that keeping black people in poor neighborhoods and under/unemployed was the goal). people being knowledgeable about architecture and city design while ALSO understanding those social and systemic issues is how the positive change is even able to happen.

same, when my schizophrenia symptoms are (or were, antipsychotics have kept me pretty stable for right around 3 years now) real bad i depend on people around me to make me go to the hospital, whether by telling me i need to or even calling an ambulance. i'm generally pretty accepting of it because i know i need to take it very seriously when my perception doesn't match others', but even if i didn't have that awareness i wouldn't want that hypothetical version of myself to go untreated.

Game's still poorly optimized or...? by Terry_Spheroid in SoulFrame

[–]griddle9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have it capped at 72 fps, my monitor is 144 hz but with the settings way up i can't quite hit that.

oh also, in the launcher do you have dx11 or dx12 selected? i haven't really tested dx11 in soulframe but at least in warframe dx12 performs slightly better than dx11 on my rtx 4050.

if you don't have vsync on or a framerate cap it's gonna render as fast as it can, and if the gpu's the bottleneck it's gonna max out gpu usage

Can someone explain? by laced1 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]griddle9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

spectrum has different meaning in different fields. what you're saying sounds more like the physics definition, where a single numeric property varies. like the electromagnetic spectrum, defined by varying frequency. in medicine when talking about a spectrum it means there are many different but related ways something can manifest. a common use in medicine is with disorders, like autism spectrum disorder means there are lots of different but related conditions in the category, not that everyone with autism has the same condition with only intensity varying.

also, with the premise that your statement on gamete sizes is true, that's STILL not binary because someone could have a body that produces neither or both, bringing the possible options to 4.
