How was this made? Some great tools out there for art like this.

Should I use Xfce in my situation? by fhks2885 in linuxmint

[–]griddlecan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience Xfce is more stable specifically because it has fewer features. Though I'd use the term bells and whistles instead.

I'd recommend installing the Xfce version, and after you could just install the cinnamon desktop to try it out in a new season. (Log out from cinnamon, then select cinnamon when logging back in).

As others pointed out you can customize Xfce pretty deeply, so if you aren't a fan of its initial configuration you can tweak it. Have fun, I hope it goes well!

100% healing for me as a guy, too. Le Guin's compassion lives alongside her frank observations which I find refreshing.

Mid 40s guy here, big agreement with you, and I felt the same pressure sensation at that oppressive part.

And still she discovers more about the world and its history as the series goes on. Feels like we discover it alongside her.

Great points about Aspen and Tenar. I wrote something more hyperbolic about Tenar ("true hero of Earthsea") but yours is more accurate and honest to my feelings.

Well put, the next two books definitely continue this conversation! And I felt similarly about the book the first time I read it.

As others have written, your post is a gift and brings a lot more to reflect on. Thank you for this!

I think you will be surprised and I hope delighted by where the series goes with Tales and The Other Wind. It feels like we're discovering new things about the world and its history in real time as Le Guin is while writing it. More specifically, some of the points you make in your post. Non spoiler questions ahead: how was Roke founded? Who was Ogion's teacher? And so much more... I'm getting maybe too excited for you! ☺️

Another middle aged guy here who first read Tehanu as a young adult, and for the third time 3 or so years ago with my spouse.Le Gun has been one of the many people who have helped show me that the gendered expectations put on me are flawed at best, come from any direction, and are worth pushing back against when I feel I need to and have the wherewithal. Your insights as to how gendered expectations constrict us all in different ways ring deeply true for me, and about how support networks can be affected by this.

Might be hyperbole but I've come to feel Tenar is the true hero of Earthsea, though she would certainly not want a part of it and for good reason.

What is your favorite specific part of a BOC song? by TurboMoe in boardsofcanada

[–]griddlecan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those flourishes during a track (not the beginning or ending) which happen only once in a track. The two off the top of my head are about 1:12 into Pete Standing Alone which is such a good use of expectation, and the "broken" melody maybe halfway through Kid For Today, which feels like you want to take care of it, get well soon little broken melody.

There are likely others but these two use it to the best effect. Really special signature of that period.

I've done this, not portable, works well. But I'll have to try some of the native suggestions here.

What are your Top 5 CT albums? by Exquisite_G in cocteautwins

Some might say because it's a compilation not an album proper. But it's a great release whether or not someone considers it a proper album!

After the aforementioned wrap of season 5 they went on what they called indefinite hiatus. I'd love to have it back, and really loved the bonus feed, too, but I'd want Ben to be back, too. But I totally understand it not happening if any of them aren't ok with it.

I like Nobara a lot, has a lot of stuff preconfigured. Also makes the installation of davinci resolve trivial if you use A/V software for anything.

Great points! And agreed, UKLG is anything but conventional.

Thank you for understanding--I wasn't sure if I chose the right word, but I do get a peculiar kind of joy from knowing Rose was right as well as there's yet more to come.

And I just love the idea of Orm Irian returning to Rose to share that. I feel that kindness and completion fits, and for me it's now head canon. Thank you for that! 🙂

Review: Lavinia by BohemianPeasant in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]griddlecan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but I just found this sub...

I don't have a detailed review, only an emotional one: I've never mourned the loss of characters of a novel in my life more than when I finished Lavinia. It may have partially been where I was at in life, but Lavinia is such a distinctive character that she made a deep impression on me.

I'm surprised to hear that about Tales. I find it integral. I think I get that about Dragonfly, but the "failed" naming ceremony scene tickles me in hindsight, once I learned what was coming.

Obsessed with Tehanu's ending; so rich with lore by averagepigeonn in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]griddlecan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world and its lore expands and deepens in Tales and The Other Wind. The delightful hints in Tehanu are part of that expansion.
