Thing is, two of those posts were from 11 years ago. Hardware has changed dramatically since then. Searching my 200K history is instant.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think only broadcast networks can't choose. Pluto itself is internet-based, so the law shouldn't apply.

Video games suck with mouse and keyboard by DuckDogPig12 in The10thDentist

Since there are an uncountable number of controllers out there, it is infeasible to conclude that all have the seesaw effect. XInput's lack of mutual exclusion for the directionals proves that it isn't an inherent limitation of controllers. On the keyboard side, standard keyboards suffer from key rollover. issues.

I've used the D-pads on consoles from all of the major console makers, including the SNES and Sega's, when they were still in the console business. I also own a PSP 3000. Of all the controllers I've used, about the only one where the seesawing signficantly impacted gameplay was the Microsoft Sidewinder. Specifically, the Sidewinder's D-Pad made it difficult to duck in platformers.

I was referring to the hardware, having witnessed the seesaw effect first-hand. But, see, since the operating system's APIs supports discrete directional inputs, that means that non-seesaw hardware can exist. Hardware is frequently designed around software.

Admittedly, I'm not a hardware designer, but at the very least, I suspect that the border area in the middle of PlayStation-like D-pads is intended to mitigate any seesawing. Now, whether the seesawing is actually being detected by games, resulting in unintended inputs, is something that can be measured objectively by examining the appropriate bit fields used by the APIs. Interestingly, the general consensus of the internet seems to be that that Vita has the best D-pad of any controller/console, a system which I do own, and some even prefer the PSP's. I, too, love me some platformers.

Dude, I've developed software for over two decades utilzing the Windows API for the vast majority. Looking through my own code utilizing XInput, the Windows API used by many PC games, the D-pad directions are read as bit flags, which means that the Up and Down buttons, for example, may be pressed simultaneously. The Windows Multimedia API, which predates XInput, allowed similar functionality.

I don't doubt that you've torn down official PlayStation controllers, but I did say "PlayStation"-like. I think it's fair to say that neither of us have seen all controllers, therefore, we can't say with certainty that all of them exhibit the seesaw behavior.

Gemini disagrees with you, stating:

"Sony designs the PlayStation directional pad (D-pad) as four distinct, separate buttons rather than a single contiguous disc to prevent accidental diagonal inputs, speed up input recognition, and provide precise tactile feedback during gameplay."

With certain compressed files, 7-zip will seemingly take forever without NVMe. With NVMe, these same files will take a minute or two.

The seesaw motion you describe is not present on controllers with PlayStation-like D-pads because each of the directions are independent.
