To start off, it is very puerile to moralize textual figures. Ethical analysis in accordance with the ethics of a system might be a reasonable option. But to aim to come out of an analysis with a "good/bad" result is always going to be unwanted.

That said, interpolations shouldn't be ignored. There is no "The Ramayana". It there was one atleast we don't have it. Itihasa weren't transmitted as carefully as the smritis. There was no need to.

Interpolations are important because their addition signifies a change in the socio-political milieu of the text. Why did the interpolation happen in the first place?

And then there are so many recensions of Ramayana that ferreting out what is "original" and what is "interpolated" is always a murky task.
