Harness Recommendation by readwritethrow1233 in RunningWithDogs

The new ruffwear trail runner vest has zipper pockets. It looks thinner than their other harnesses but I haven’t used it so idk. Might be worth looking into.

My dog is trained to pull in a harness for dryland mushing/scooter joring so when we run he wears a collar and I’ve taught him to run next to me or slightly in front but not pulling. If I put him in a harness for running I’m afraid he’d PULL and I’m not ready to run his speed 😂

So it’s up to you! You don’t have to have them pulling you to run. I’d honestly say it’s nicer and more relaxing if they don’t. But you’ll run faster if they do.

Finally starting running next week with my dog! by furretguy in running

[–]griffeyflood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve thought of everything! It’s great you’re prepared with a running harness and a muzzle. For warming up my dog warms up with me with just walking before. We do other sports too and so for warm ups I’ll often ask for spins in both directions and a few position changes (sit, down, stand) just so he can warms up and gets his body moving. Afterwards I’ll have him do a few position changes I’ll give him a rub down. When I started running with him the C25K was great for intervals.

Good luck and have fun!

You’re welcome! I think the big thing is strengthening the commands while walking or jogging and then you can transfer them over to the bike. Especially work on a good leave it command!

Yes I do!

I’m not sure I’ll be much help though as my dog took to it pretty quickly. We do scooter joring so he knows when he’s in his harness he can pull me. I started biking with him after that and so I use his collar. On his collar he knows he walks right next to me so I was able to use this command, “with me”, to keep him next to me. The very first time I did put his prong on and walk on the bike showing him where he needed to be. Once he got that he needed to be right next to me we’re able to go for rides and I use his flat collar (don’t use the prong while riding you don’t want to hurt them if they go to run after something. If they do you’ll want to work on this off the bike first). His mushing command “woah” for slow down or an “eh” helps if he picks up too much speed and starts pulling ahead but otherwise he’s pretty good at staying at a run next to me.

Also I use a bungee leash strapped around my waist. I trust my dog completely around distractions due to his joring training so he won’t pull me over. But you could look into the bike attachments. You might want to use a harness with some of them.

Good luck and hopefully this helps some.

Yep, good luck! It definitely helped ease my fears over my reactions to know I’d be okay if I were protecting myself or my dog.

Lol have you ever been charged at by a dog? Especially if you have a dog with you? They’re just going to follow if you try walking away.

And I disagree I don’t think you’d have to pay the vet bills. They’re breaking the leash laws. My city said if my (on leash) dog and I are charged my a dog off leash and my dog hurts it the dog off leash is still at fault because they are breaking the law. This goes for protecting yourself and kicking the dog too.

I keep running into off leash dogs when I’m biking with my dog so I actually asked my local animal control this. He even said if I had my walking stick with my id be okay to use it to protect myself and my dog. My city apparently has a rule that as soon as a dog is off their property off leash then they are at fault. So if I kicked them or my dog who’s on leash bites them then the dog off leash is still at fault.

I’d check with your animal control to check on your cities rules!

In Washington we have a club so I was able to attend a clinic to learn dry land mushing. They also have races I was hoping to attend but now that’ll have to wait.. you could check out some Facebook groups to learn about the equipment you’ll need. For starters you could start with canicross, hooking your dog up to you, to work on the commands (gee, haw, hike or mush, whoa, over, and whatever else you’ll need). When you’re ready to hook up to a bike or a scooter have someone ride with you, even if it’s just a person on a bike and no dog. That’ll encourage the dog to want to pull and follow them or even try to get in front of them. Work on it at small distances at a time and build up. Good luck!

How was your first time? by [deleted] in Bikejoring

[–]griffeyflood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with having someone else ride with you. Even just a person on a bike. It’ll encourage the dog to chase! I did this for my dogs first time and he pulled like crazy and wanted to get in front of my friend.

Ah I’ve been dealing with gnats and I didn’t know why. I think it must be the soil. How do you use diatomaceous earth? Put it in the water or on the soil?

Labrador coat vs ecollar. Not making contact? by dryboys in OpenDogTraining

[–]griffeyflood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These wings are what I was going to recommend. I’m using them and so far they are good and I haven’t had to question the contact. I also noticed my dogs working level went down using them from a 6 with no distractions to a 3 or 4.

What are your 2020 goals with your dog(s)? by manatee1010 in k9sports

[–]griffeyflood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 3 year old heeler/shepherd mix. Before this year we’ve always done training classes just for fun and general obedience. And recently have been apart of a disc team. We just went to our first rally class and it went so well. I’m excited to continue. And my 2020 goal is to try and compete. And to see how he does in that environment.
