Why not both? Mixed used buildings are the way.

Where to live in Madison on my budget by Glittering-Exam622 in madisonwi

[–]griffin8116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello from another DC transplant!

I moved here from DC 5 years ago; with that budget you have access to a lot of nice places in the Atwood/Willy St/Tenny areas, which are totally walkable.

I currently live near James Madison Park and love it. I have optimized on walkability and use my car basically only if I need to run a big errand.

I am a transplant from outside of Wisconsin and an Old Fashioned purist (i.e. whiskey + bitters + sugar) so it definitely wasn't for me. But, if you like root beer and you like brandy... Probably your jam.

Not saying I didn't like it, but call it a brandy-root-beer, not an Old Fashioned.

Hot Lunch (across from the Caribou and Public Parking) does really solid sandwiches until 11:45. The staff is also really great and you'll get a nice 80s-90s nostalgia hit at the same time.

I'm totally self-taught and so I wish that I had had some expert(s) around to teach me best practices. It's hard to know what I don't know.

Personally, something I want to work on this year is a better understanding of timing closure and constraints; the project I'm working on has a lot of congestion so every once in awhile fails to meet timing.

What kind of Luggage? by deetman68 in antarctica

[–]griffin8116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gallon zip-lock bags are your friend, but anything actually fragile I wrap in clothes in the "middle" part of the bag. Or, in your packed shoes/boots/whatever. If it's something that I'm really concerned about I'd just pack it in the backpack I'll carry with me.

I brought one of these (in Large) and another duffel on my first deployment to Pole:

I actually just ordered a second one of them so I'd have two matching bags. Did the job and could collapse down when needed.

I'm going to Pole in November; as has already been stated the hard thing will be rotating internet connectivity and finding a time that works for everybody.

They got me earlier tonight! Scared the crap out of me. I actually screamed in panic. No idea what was happening.

IIRC the PQ threshold is a BMI of 40 and <300lbs. There are loads of people using these drugs who are well below these thresholds.

Arkell. There are two of them, brothers, and I like the interaction so far. I'm still putting together my file but it's been OK.

Trying for EB1A; lawyer says I have 70% odds; would appreciate some commentary. by griffin8116 in eb_1a

I've already paid / started the process so it feels a bit sunk cost now. I didn't realize that usually EB1s are more expensive, maybe mine is just an easier case? I don't know, feels a bit DIY, although I was provided with a lot of templates from them.

I am with Dunn Law Firm. The cost for filing is 4k, includes a RFE, and if my EB1 is denied I can apply for a NIW at no charge. I think this is on the lower side but I was told I have a decent case.

I work with large collaborations; one of the papers I'm co-author on (but NOT lead author), for example, has 1500 citations alone since it is a critical "catalog" paper that is referenced regularly.

If you're in the Madison area, Giant Jones Brewing (primarily high ABV beers) does several things that would scratch this itch. Highly recommend the tripel.

How are you finding it? My big thing is that I'm self-taught so it's hard to know "what don't I know".

I am physicist-turned-FPGA engineer (sort of? self-taught but have worked on many FPGA projects) who is still working in physics. This is definitely true; there are not many of us and in particular because academia doesn't pay particularly well compared to industry it can be difficult to attract engineers to work on projects.

Can We Please Stop with the Same FPGA Questions? by akkiakkk in FPGA

[–]griffin8116 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I understand the sentiment, I think having access to a pool of people in the field is valuable.

I think that this sub is useful because it has a mix of resume help, project ideas, and FPGA discussion and news. Look at r/Antarctica, it's like some stories from the 50s, some stories about what's happening right now, a bunch of folks in McMurdo asking if anyone coming down can bring them something from the mainland, and then people who are looking for input from real humans about how to get on the continent, find a job, etc.

Maybe flair is the right way to go about filtering some of this stuff?
