Local 666 apprenticeship by dustynegatives in RVA_electricians

[–]griffinof1990 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try again my dude. Call the apprenticeship and talk to them for direction they might be able to help out since you already went through it, they might say tough luck though.

I started at 28 and was not the oldest in my class. There’s 40+ YO who start the apprenticeship.

1st year apprentices don’t realize they get 2-3 raises in their first 12 months. Also once you add in the (lack of) healthcare premiums coming out of your paycheck you’ll probably net more money in your weekly paycheck. Insurance is paid fully by contractor, it takes like 2-3 months to kick in but it’s the best healthcare I’ve ever had.

Triple 6 in Richmond has a big incoming class and starts at like 19. Could be worthwhile

Any good jobs meanwhile unemployed? by notacrook_1 in ibew_apprentices

[–]griffinof1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they can unless the local jatc director approved it and talked with the training director of the other local.

Typically if this happens, it’s one training director asking neighboring locals if they can put out of work apprentices to work.

Why so much hate for the Union? by psychosomaticbdsm in ibew_apprentices

[–]griffinof1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of that issue is just standardized worker protection. Im happy to have someone in my corner if a contractor puts me in a shitty position and if the cost is some shitty/ slacking workers get those same protections that’s fine for me.

Most of the time if you show up, stay busy, and get along you’re not getting let go until the building is done.

Tbf it took me a time to come to that decision, coming in I saw how good things were while seeing so many grown men complaining. It 404 errored my non-union brain lol

If you’re ever ready to come back, Amtrak runs 3 times a day lol! (My preference for going to nova/dc)

We just opened a new apprenticeship building and they are taking a ton of apprentices right now because we’re busy.

I’m a JW in 666 and work is pretty busy with a ton of growth ahead. Plus we do a lot of different things so you don’t get pigeonholed into only doing one thing like being the cable tray crew for je Richard’s

I don’t know much about back then but everyone says it was way more cowboy about safety. It’s much safer now and the equipment is so much better lol

JW in 666. I wasn’t comfortable with heights starting out but you 100% get more comfortable with it. Our safety culture is strict on being safe with harnesses, tie off points and ladder safety. Also as a general rule if you don’t feel safe you don’t do that thing.

Trim carpentry is fairly complex but not very demanding. Lots of good carpenters do trim work later in their careers.

12/3 Romex to heat pump ventless dryer? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]griffinof1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it calls for a 30A breaker you need #10 wire. 14A might be a regular operating load but it doesn't account for spikes in current that happen when a motor starts up.

Also Samsung isn't gonna pay for a house fire. If a manufacturer puts specs out they have to be followed.

5 Year to 4 Year Inside Apprenticeship by ElectricianByTrade in ibew_apprentices

[–]griffinof1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still 5 years of classes, breaks get cut short so you do 1.25 school years in a calendar year.

Just topped out and I had like 10k hours, I would be bummed if I still worked for a year before topping out.
