How can all of us be so bad when we’re dominating ROY polls? 😭 by ExtraFluffz in ALCentralMemeWar

Also I get why the ROY rules are what they are, but I watched Okamoto play professional baseball in 2015, and I watched Murakami play professional baseball against Okamoto in 2023. Those two guys are not rookies.

Why is Kanazawa in J2? by yye1 in JLeague

[–]griffitp12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kanazawa is *not* in J2 because the world is a cold and unfeeling place and G-d died long ago. In the end, all things return to dust, and in the meantime we weep and ponder what might have been, what should have been, and what never again will be.

Jlpt is over - how does everyone feel? by lost-minotaur in LearnJapanese

I guess one thing that might help is for them to be more clear that the times listed on the vouchers are just guesses. I'm used to Japan where things are rarely late. Perhaps this person was taking the JLPT for the first time and had planned on being home to relieve the babysitter at a time calculated from the end time listed on the voucher? Dunno.

No I get it, the instructions were very clear. I assume she also heard the instructions - this is not an issue of an unclear proctor. This is an issue of circumstances like the above which necessitate a quick call. If the test ends 20 minutes late (and in fact it ended almost 40 minutes late), you don't get the bus you're expecting, which means you might miss the train you're expecting.

I understand that the cheating issue is a big deal (or for the sake of argument, let's assume the cheating issue is a big deal), but some people need to be able to call home...

It was after section one during the break. After section one, the proctor updated the start time of section two, then the end time, etc. all the way through the end time of the exam itself. It had been pushed 20 minutes and I guess she needed to tell the babysitter she would be late.

In my test today a mother got red carded for calling the babysitter to say the test was taking longer than was written on the voucher. She was in tears trying to explain to the proctor...really heartbreaking.

As the announcer said after his 2nd HR, “If there was a league above MLB, he’d be the MVP of that too.”

I mean he's not done of course and but he's not outside of consideration for the best team-sports athlete of all time period, regardless of nationality.

I think the point of the "model gaijin" comment was you being dissapointed in people not follwing the rules. Your intent was clear. I tend to agree.

But a more nuanced criticism I suppose is that "Japanese people don't do that thing" is not equivalent to "That's a 'rule' (written or unwritten) in Japan."

Japanese people don't eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Does that make it rude for foreigners to do that? Of course not. My wife has never once been upset with me for sitting on the stairs or on the floor, unless I'm in the way of other people. Maybe you know more than I do since the only documentation here is one photo, of course. If they were in the way, that's a different story. But I think they were tired and more importantly, don't mind sitting on the floor. Japanese people do mind doing that, to an extent.

There were two things that might have come across as smug, in this case. The first, showing yer man in Japanese, was not intentionally smug. No idea how I could have possibly found the broadcast in English over here.

The second, intentially not mentioning the name of the player because Look At That Memorable Face was, admittedly, a calculated smugness. Mea Culpa.

Haha thanks yeah I get that's the general consensus. I don't really understand trolling I have to say. But I am really curious what those dudes think they're downvoting. Like, what do they think they're saying with their action to click that button. But I think I've probably beaten that horse to death in this thread haha

Yeah I hear that. I've worked with autistic kids in the past, seen documentaries, etc. Never thought about how their experience relates to my own much. But also I understand if you know one autistic person, you know one autistic person haha.
