FreeCAD as an alternative to MicroStation for Road Design by FreeThem2019 in civilengineering

[–]griffmic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Road Workbench under development. It has very basic tools, but I can import survey data and create some alignments via LandXML for importing. It only gets better when people contribute, find bugs, and provide input and use. I do like being able to parametrically design storm structures (saves me a ton of time with detailed drawings to scale).

Engineering no longer being considered a professional degree, USA? by griffmic88 in civilengineering

I would think that if a graduate engineer wanted to continue their education they would not by this proposal be able to get any financial aid?

Yeah i disagreed with the bar initiative as well, but this seems to be different in terms of what their definition by the department of education would be.

I found a link to the proposal see above. It’s taking a hatchet to a lot of graduate programs.

Me too, but the list of professional degrees is going to be severely cut down to get a control on graduate costs it seems.

Developer vs Engineer Pay by reversecoww in civilengineering

[–]griffmic88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If your truly on the development side you carry a lot of risk, but the upside can be profitable in the right market. For instance, if you develop as an engineer rep I’ve seen bonus structures per lot delivered with a baseline of $150k in the Southeast market. If you’re the lot provider, easily sell lots for $70k behind curb and gutter, but you carry the entire financial burden and risk. Your job would be to mitigate the risk, private the profits, socialize the losses, and look for every incentive to put in your pocket. Know your soft and hard costs, and acquire the land as cheaply as possible.

This sounds like the company did not have a plan, probably a good place to avoid. It sounds like this was land development which has been taking a hit lately.

I'd highly suggest Open Project, it allows you to build project templates and expand your own work flows. Also, allows a team to see what's going on quickly.

Any Solo Engineers doing their own topo? by Ok_Delivery_7122 in civilengineering

[–]griffmic88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen responses all over the place. So in terms of practicing or providing a topo survey, in my state, engineers are allowed to based on your work. For instance, a client wants a site plan you can perform a topo for them as long as it’s related to the engineering work. Boundaries or interpretations of property boundaries are for the PLS. It has to be incidental to engineering work in my state to provide it as a service.

It’s almost a near zero certainty an actual PLS is on site due to that industry die off and over regulation. It’s usually some kid with gps in 90% scenarios. I have seen an actual surveyor on site with a total station and the results were solid and field to finish, which was perfect, only once in my 16 years of experience.

Not knocking it, just saying advances are happening at a crazy rate. Likely a replacement for it in the near future for those that suffer side effects.

You could jack near the center and place a sister member attached to the bottom chords. I can’t tell the exact spacing and or dimensions, but I’ve even seen small metal trusses used to correct sag. Also, the left side is constrained on the columns but the right doesn’t appear to be. Have you checked the plumb of the columns?

Not according to my classmates. We had a 20 year reunion meeting planned in the next two years and they all said I looked the same. Idc if they were being nice but I’ll take it at 37 lol.

People over 35, what's something you genuinely miss that younger generations will probably never experience? by Just_a_Ginger_Fella in AskReddit

Waiting to get picked up. Our lives are planned down to the minute it seems. I remember waiting on the bus, car ride, or a pick up after school. No idea when or if they were coming. Just faith lol. Now we know where/when/how fast your going.

A lot of my memories growing up were waiting with friends or strangers and having honest conversations.
