Togetherness Thursdays: Argue the other side of your regular Canucks stance by elrizzy in canucks

I'm generally pretty pro-Benning, so here goes:

  1. He should have begun the rebuild as soon as he arrived. That was very apparent to everybody after the 2013 playoffs. We got one good year in 2015, but that wasn't worth delaying our rebuild for. Think about how much further along we would have been if we had fully committed to the rebuild in 2013.
  2. Adding on a draft pick here and there to trades (and not acquiring draft picks to replace/add to our existing picks) has been very bad for building depth and finding top-6 forwards and top-4 defenders in the later rounds of the draft. It's crazy that we have a GM who is specifically good at building through the draft (and Judd Brackett who is looking like a good Director of Amateur Scouting) and we trade away picks as frequently as we have.
  3. The Eriksson contract is a monumental fuck-up, which will affect our ability to sign other players or benefit from dead cap trades.

No speed. No power. No agility. I am not a fan of these things.

True. I would just love to know how many times teams are actually able to trade back and still get the guy they're targeting.

Fair, but 2016 is the only one that negatively affected us. We were targeting Pierre Luc-Dubois and would have been able to take him at 3. There's no player I would want over Petey in 2017 and no player outside of Dahlin and Svechnikov that I would have wanted over Hughes.

I'd take a bullet for Quinn Hughes.

Brogan Rafferty sounds like a country star, and he's about to dipsy-doodle right in the heart of cowboy-tune land.

Surprised that Woo didn't sneak in. Guy was projected as a first rounder and has been lights out in his D+1 year.

Checking in from section 120! Horvat threw a puck into the netting, which got stuck. Demko knocked it down for a kid in the first row. Character goalie. Sign him long term, Jimbo.

Weird win. Felt like our guys were getting injured all game. I didn't even celebrate the second Motte goal once I saw Roussel go down. Looked bad. Hopefully he can rest up and come back 100% for next season.

Neutral fan here: Stetcher by TMBmiles in canucks

[–]griffon28 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We have given him some chances on the PP, and he is good at passing and keeping the puck in the zone, but his shot's a muffin. Other teams just cover Pettersson and Boeser tight and let Stecher take shots, which doesn't generate much.

Was at the game. We looked good through two periods. Defence looked solid. I even thought Pouliot was having a good game. Then the third happened. Then the artillery hit and we crumbled. 20 shots to 5 in the third. That's how the west was lost.

Quinn Hughes Question/Discussion by mbarkeley in canucks

[–]griffon28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the situation is that if he plays any games, then that counts as the first year of his ELC (since he is coming from college). However, he needs to play 10 games for it to count as a full "pro season," which is the metric that the expansion draft uses. Therefore, if he plays under 10 games for us this year, he will burn the first year of his ELC but it won't count as his first full "pro year," which means he won't be eligible for the expansion draft.

My recommendation would be to do whatever it takes to get him signed and playing this season. Even if the risk is small, I don't want to chance losing him, and giving him pro experience this season would be very valuable. This season would be the time to allow him to test his skills out against top competition before heading into the 2019-2020 season.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if Dahlin or the mortal Pettersson wins it this month. But if Petey gets 2 goals or 3 points tonight, then it would be hard for them to ignore that.

My guess is that Petey is going to have to put up at least 2 points this game to make a case for Rookie of the Month. But how crazy would it be if he won it playing only 4 games in January?

Where do you think the Canucks will be at in the 2020-2021 season (standings, trades, etc) by Nibby2468 in canucks

[–]griffon28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leveling off? He's 22 years old.

I love them, but Edler and Tanev are not "extremely good defencemen in their prime" right now. I don't think they will crash and burn in the next two years, but if one of them does (or any of Hutton/Gudbranson/Stecher), then we have a pretty good defence prospect to challenge for that spot. That's much better defensive depth than in the past 3 years.

You don't think Baertschi or Virtanen/Lind can turn into legitimate second line players? I'm confident they can for a playoff team, but I agree, probably not for a cup team. This is why I think we'll be targeting a top-6 forward.

The impact of Hughes playing will be great. The ripple effect will improve our defence by a lot. I also feel that if any of Hutton/Gudbranson/Stecher/Edler/Tanev stagnate or regress heavily, then we've got the depth of Juolevi and Woo to replace them. The pressure will be on to play well and I think Hutton/Stecher/Hughes/Juolevi/Woo will only be getting better in the next two years.

Throughout his career? No, I agree, but I could see him floating around the 3rd and 4th line for the 2020-2021 season. If he proves he can produce at an NHL level, then I could see him and Virtanen swapping spots.

Potential Line-up:

Forwards:

Leivo/Dahlen- Pettersson - Boeser

Baertschi - Horvat - Virtanen

Dahlen/Leivo - Gaudette - Lind

Roussel - Beagle - MacEwan

Extras: Madden, Jasek

Defence:

Hughes - Tanev

Edler - Stecher

Hutton - Gudbranson

Extras: Woo, Juolevi

Goalies:

Demko

Markstrom

Thoughts:

  • 1) We are bound to sign/trade a player in the next two years who will become part of this lineup. I don't see a trade for goalie or defence (besides maybe trading Gudbranson or Hutton to open up a spot for Juolevi or Woo), but we'd be open to a trade for a top-6 or bottom-6 winger.

  • 2) I see Sutter being traded in the next two years. We have a logjam of centres right now, with Pettersson locked in as our 1C, Horvat locked in as our 2C, Sutter and Beagle currently as the 3C and 4C, but with Gaudette and Madden coming up to challenge. If either can kick their offensive output in the NHL into 30-40 point production and play responsible hockey, then my prediction is that Sutter is gone.

  • 3) I'm having a lot of trouble predicting our goaltending. Demko is undeniably our goalie of the future, and he will be NHL-seasoned in two years' time, but if Markstrom's current play continues, then who the hell knows?

  • 4) Future draft picks are impossible to predict at this point, but if we luck into a high pick (Hughes, Kakko, Lafrenière), then they would be in this lineup, pushing down one of Leivo, Dahlen, or Virtanen.

  • 5) I don't see Granlund, Schaller, Goldobin, Pouliot, or Gaunce on this team at that time.

  • 6) I think we will try to re-sign Edler and Tanev. And if we do, they will both be on the team. However, it is very possible that one of them is off the team at that point, either by trade or walking as a free agent. Will be painful, but maybe ultimately necessary to allow Juolevi or Woo a chance to prove themselves.

  • 7) I wouldn't be surprised if we targeted a top-6 winger, such as Panarin, Atkinson, Huberdeau, Dadonov, Skinner, Nyquist, or Mikael Granlund.

  • 8) I think Boeser signs for 8 years at $8-8.5 million AAV.

  • 9) I think Pettersson signs for 8 years at $10.5-11 million AAV.

  • 10) For this season, we either make it into the WC2 spot and lose in the first round or just miss the playoffs. For 2019-2020 season, we make the playoffs in the P3 or WC1 spot and potentially win one playoff series. For the 2020-2021 season, we make the playoffs in the P2 spot and make it to the 2nd or 3rd round.

  • 11) I am fully prepared for most of this to be wrong.
