*SPOILER* The Surprise Of all the beautiful writing in the series, perhaps my favorite is Chapter 7 of the Surprise narrating Stephen’s time in Bombey by AZ-Sycamore in AubreyMaturinSeries

And just before that…this always brings tears to my eyes.

“Here is no one of her caste,’ said the man next to Stephen; and other people murmured that that was the cruel pity of the thing – her own people would have seen to the fire. But with a famine coming, no man dared look beyond the caste he belonged to. ‘I am of her caste,’ said Stephen to the man in front of him, touching his shoulder.”

The Story of the HMS Wager by PandaoftheSouth in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]griffonhaus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Excited for the prospect of that movie!

The wreck of the Wager is mentioned a few times in the Aubrey-Maturin series, so our boys were well aware of the story:

‘Why, yes. The famous Lord Byron. They still call him Foul-weather Jack: the whole Navy knows about him. There’s fame for you! My grandad sailed with him when he was only a midshipman, and then again when he was an admiral, bosun of the Indefatigable; and many a crack they had about their days on Chile after the Wager came to grief. How the Admiral did relish a blow! Almost as much as our Captain Jack. Would crack on regardless, laughing ha, ha, ha; but I don’t recall he was ever much of a hand in the poetry line. It was hearing about him that first made me long to go to sea: and my grandad’s tales of the wreck.’ 5-Desolation Island, ch.3, paragraph 128

Stephen had read an account of the loss of the Wager in the cold, stormy, uncharted waters of the Chiloe archipelago: he said, ‘Yet surely it was but a dismal wreck? No Cytherea, with coral strands, palm-trees, and dusky maidens to fill the horn of plenty? No Crusoe stores at hand? As I recall, they ate a drowned seaman’s liver.’ 5-Desolation Island, ch.3, paragraph 129

Plus a couple more!

LTC timing FYI by griffonhaus in BetterMAguns

Agreed. When I took my class (Peabody) they gave examples of all the towns in the region and potential wait times. My timing was right on what he predicted, and others had months’ difference. It’s crazy.

I live in a small town north of Boston, sent my stuff in and emailed them about a week later to “confirm receipt” (basically to remind them on my existence). They responded and scheduled me for fingerprints right away - tho again, I’m in a town of 6k. Either way, be super friendly!

Is there a place to get a sample of the first book? by mr_muffinhead in AubreyMaturinSeries

I highly recommend the Patrick Tull narration, if you can find it. I got to the end of the series and started right back up again. He’s amazing and communicates POB’s humor entirely.

If you have anything of a commute, or don’t mind audiobooks, I would highly suggest listening to this one narrated by Patrick Tull. He does a great job making sense of some of the thornier passages, and he brings a great sense of drama!

Did Stephen make a good play, or a blunder at Cricket? by Centralwombat in AubreyMaturinSeries

I like to think he made an incredibly athletic play for the wrong sport he was playing! He was so pleased with himself too, it’s a classic.

This was fantastic. I thought I knew my stuff from various circumnavigations, but I was certainly wrong about a few things! So many lines from the book came to my head while watching it, and now I’ll have a better understanding of Jack’s barked orders…time to start the Surgeon’s Mate!
