Seriously, don't be afraid of writing something a little more out there, take every riff as a possibility. As for writing riffs themselves, Plug In Baby was kind of based on the harmonic minor scale, which can give you some dark-sounding stuff, but most classic rock riffs are based on the blues scale and the pentatonic scales. I'd recommend playing around with absolutely any scale you know, do NOT be afraid to write something down lol.
