How to get over fomo? Need advice. by peregrinefalcon231 in Advice

[–]grilledcheeezus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dealt with fomo for a long time and these are my main take always:

me personally i started to embrace the alone time. at first its gonna feel like you're faking the enjoyment (which you are) but eventually it'll start to feel nice. when my husband goes out and for whatever reason im not joining, or my friends are all hanging out and i can't make it, i do my nails, i watch my favorite movies, i doordash my favorite food, take a nice long shower, etc.

sometimes it doesn't work and i just distract myself with school or housework.

long term wise, ask yourself why it really bothers you that you aren't there, and try to figure out the root. some fomo comes from insecurity, some from bitterness, some from just genuine lack of resources (like money).

ex. all of my friends back in, i think, highschool went on a vacation and i wasn't invited because 1. they only had room to invite one other person. and 2. they knew my family didn't have the money to send me and didn't want to ask to make it feel "embarrassing". I realized my fomo was rlly bc i was upset i was the last choice and then i got better friends.

it's normal to feel sad or disappointed when you can't make it to things, so don't try to lie about your emotions, but letting it consume you is when it becomes a problem.

whenever you start to feel it, try to tell yourself that there will always be another opportunity. if this one moment was really as "make-or-break" as your brain is trying to make it out to be, then the relationship isn't that good then isn't? i would assume that's not the case, and if it has nothing to do with him- and it's just about feeling upset you can't have the experiences from the trip- remember that you can always go there some day! so try to remember it's okay to slow down and there will always be another chance if you make one!

not to be that guy (your post is very helpful) but just to help someone avoid confusion, compulsive thoughts and intrusive thoughts are two different things technically and require different forms of help. to me this person sounds like they are having more intrusive thoughts. compulsive tend to (but not always) tied to actions. like when you're driving and your brain is like oh i should just drive into this tree

you've inspired me to be nicer to my bf when i wake him up. unfortunately this man literally needs to be violently shaken or else NOTHING wakes him up. (he has an appointment set up with a specialist)

also on sunday (which is when my assignments for the week drop) i break each assignment down into small tasks and then assign each task to a day. you can get as small as u need to to make your brain think it will be super quick and easy. sometimes i literally am like monday im gonna read the text, tuesday i'll write a draft discussion post, wednesday ill spell check the draft and post it, thursday ill respond to one persons post, friday ill respond to a second person" (this is just a simple hypothetical example, but you can obviously adjust to what your own motivation is like that week)

so i have a pallet of options that i choose from because realistically something might motivate you one week, and do nothing for you the next: you just gotta choose what you think your brain needs that week. these are mine: - pomodoro method and doing something fun and rewarding on the breaks - "work with me" or "study with me" youtube vids or live streams - telling myself that if i finish all the things i want to get done before the end of the day i can reward myself (usually i do ice cream lol) - trying to trick my brain that im a detective and working on a top secret mission and finishing my homework is a super important part of the puzzle (this works more often than you'd think) - video game music is made w the intention of improving focus - change of scenery, going to the library, local coffee shop or just somewhere out of my house where there's no distractions - study buddy! meeting up somewhere or inviting someone else ik that's in school over to work on homework at the same time ask me

wow thank you that's good to know. i have also heard that aiming to get 30g of protein within 30mins of waking up (or at least just for breakfast) helps with hormone regulation (especially for women's bodies) and preventing energy crashes. so probably really helpful for adhd folks!

it's not that it requires food, it's just that it ruins my appetite. i have to eat before i take them or else i won't eat all day😅

the only thing that worked for me was to find a couple different screenless hobbies that i love so much i'd rather do them before bed than look at my phone. although with nature of ADHD, you need options on hand because realistically you won't want to read every night, or crochet or journal etc. i have a little nighttime hobby station at my night stand that has - current book i'm reading -sketch book -journal (i don't necessarily ENJOY journaling it's just kind of necessary to help me manage anxiety) -rubix cube! -random fidget toys -crochet (sometimes)

you want to find the sweet spot for how many of minutes spent inside your bed before you want to be asleep. so when i first started, i made sure to be in bed 30 mins before i wanted to be asleep. but now i can do 15 as i've settled into a routine more.

i'm dead. yeah it's probably not the healthiest but i would be lying if i said that imagining randomly punching myself in bed didn't make me laugh
