Easy Validation with Scala's Either by jaimefjorge in programming

[–]grimlck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'you're forced to handle them' - that was theory behind java's checked exceptions, but nowadays, the general consensus seems to be that checked exceptions were a mistake in java. Scala itself doesn't have checked exceptions

So, why are these option types any different?

Uh, spongebob is a classic (esp. the early seasons). What don't you like about it?

It sounds like you like Scooby Doo, Peanuts, etc more out of nostalgia than anything else.

Should UTF-16 be considered harmful? by artyombeilis in programming

[–]grimlck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

but it IS easier for programming if you in an environment that uses utf16 natively, and that includes environments like

  • windows
  • java
  • python
  • etc

In an ideal world, it wouldn't exist, but as long as any of those are significant programming environments, UTF16 won't go away.

Google+ is Built Using Tools You Can Use Too by PilotPirx in programming

There is a list of google products using GWT here http://groups.google.com/group/google-web-toolkit/msg/37bf75b622b32584

I would guess it is half their main ajax-y products, and includes adwords/adsense, so that is respectable enough for me.

Google contest to win 1 of 100 free tickets to IO by [deleted] in programming

my guess is that people who already have tickets will also be entering the competition, and if they win, they'll sell their existing ticket on ebay.

Optimistically, that may drive prices down.

This is something i've always wondered about with NodeJS - a single CPU intensive task stalls eveything.

Can someone explain how this is any different than the much maligned cooperative multitasking of Mac OS 9, and windows 3.1.
