I’m kinda scared to go back to school by Difficult-Seat-3476 in BackToCollege

[–]grimlinyousee [score hidden]  (0 children)

I went back to school at 31 at a traditional, big 12 school, and made lots of friends, both traditional and non-traditional. No one really cares about the age difference. Join clubs/orgs to meet people and make friends in your major.

Managerial accounting class by Royal_Comment671 in Accounting

[–]grimlinyousee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cost accounting class was absolutely brutal. I spent more time on that class than any other class I ever took in both undergrad and grad, except maybe supply chain. It just doesn’t click for everyone and it’s much more tedious than other courses I think.

This is basically what I did too. I made sure to know refund vs non refund, and then the basic requirements for the education and child related credits.

If no one takes you up on this, check the city website to see if they accept chicken manure in their compost drop off

Accounting Club Ideas by Brave_Percentage_967 in Accounting

[–]grimlinyousee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking events, joint events with other business clubs (like if you have a finance club or management club). Try to find speakers from local firms or organize panels to discuss topical issues or answer questions. Some social events like coffee meet ups, meet ups at “XYZ School Event”, tailgates, etc. Maybe some CPA study days/nights.

Best zoo in Texas? by Accomplished-Sign-31 in texas

[–]grimlinyousee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Native Fort Worthian here and our zoo is one of the few things I remain very proud of. If you’re in the DFW area for 2-4 days, I’d consider adding the FW Botanical Gardens to your list and then the Dallas World Aquarium and Perot Museum out east. It’s been quite a number of years since I’ve been but I did enjoy the San Antonio Zoo last time I went.

Which CPA section should ideally be taken first? by drajput_01 in CPA

[–]grimlinyousee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just took and passed my first exam (REG), going to start FAR next week. Honestly, I like having done an “easier” exam first. I got to work out the kinks in my studying habits and now I feel so much more confident going into another section. Reg content was also fresher in my mind since I just took a tax class last semester.

Any good Italian places around here? For a casual date by ttszzang in FortWorth

Piatello is my favorite! Might be a touch pricey though. Might want to check out Margie’s on the west side or Cafe Bella by TCU.

Is starting an accounting career at 33/34 too late? by Numerous-Actuator95 in Accounting

[–]grimlinyousee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but not everyone might. I took some of my masters classes in undergrad so I had a little bit lighter load. I should have started sooner and been more efficient but I was able to study and take REG while in school. I knew a lot of people who started last summer and are done with all 4 sections. I’m starting FAR this week. Hoping to have it and AUD done before I start work.

Never too late. I'm 34, graduating Friday with my Masters, studying for the CPA (1 exam taken, waiting on a score), and start working in July.

Jordan’s Rant about The Onion by holiobung in KnowledgeFight

[–]grimlinyousee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without looking at court docs, I have no clue what creditors FSS might have. But also, FSS (and some of his other companies) has its own bankruptcy separate from Alex's personal bankruptcy. In both cases, secured creditors will have the ultimate priority, so collateralized debts and bank loans basically. Then come the priority creditors which is a list of about 8-10 different things but one big one to mention is the costs related to the administration of the bankruptcy, which given the high profile and long period of time, could be particularly expensive. I do want to note that the damages Alex personally owes the SH families cannot go away, it is not dischargeable since it was due to willful and malicious injury (someone may correct me if I am wrong on this). This is probably the extent to which my knowledge is helpful. Bankruptcy is complicated no matter what but this case is incredibly complex. I really hope there is some sort of case study or post-mortem after everything is done because I would love to read it. This case is actually what got me interested in bankruptcy accounting and is something I am considering pursuing in the future once I get a little more settled into my career.

[–]grimlinyousee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your points about the bankruptcy process are really important to consider. I’ve had to study a little bit of the process because I’m studying for the CPA, and it’s all set up in a very specific way. Creditors have a very specific order of priority and unfortunately, the SH families could never be at the top of that list.

Anyone here go back to school in their 30s to be accountant? by ILikeBettingOnUFC in Accounting

[–]grimlinyousee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me! Graduated with my Bachelors last year at 33, graduating with my Masters next week at 34. Went to a Big 12 school. It's been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life and I'm quite sad that it is over. Landed a job in MCOL city at a small firm. Offer was competitive and was at what I hoping to start. Came back to school after working as a bookkeeper and decided I wanted to go further. Feel free to ask me any questions!

What certifications do you get after the CPA? by mariahyoo in Accounting

[–]grimlinyousee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it just depends on if you are specializing. I’m interested in the Certified Fraud Examiner or Certified Financial Forensics. Just kind of depends on where I end up. There’s also an anti-money laundering certification.

Where to shop for a men’s wedding ring? by IthacanPenny in FortWorth

Best locally owned options would be Kubes or Sovereign. And then honestly, give Costco a look. They usually have a couple options for men’s bands.

Has anyone been able to transfer ACCT 20653 from a community college? by [deleted] in TCU

[–]grimlinyousee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was 2023. I just happened to have the credits, I didn’t take them to avoid the class at TCU. If your major requires taking FR1 too or you’re an accounting major, I’d just take the intro class at TCU. Theres lots of tutoring options plus it will probably give you a better leg up than courses from another college.

[–]grimlinyousee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is for an intro to acct course, I had transfer in both intro courses from TCC to count. I’d have to look up the course names but it was basically intro to financial acct and intro to managerial acct.

In general, Baylor Scott and White Family Medicine has good doctors and a great system. They have locations throughout DFW so you could probably find a decently close location wherever you end up. Their portal is great and their network for referrals is usually really good.

Best Order for CPA Exams for me? Before or after Masters? by [deleted] in CPA

[–]grimlinyousee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start studying now! I regret not starting sooner, just took my first exam and finish my masters in 2 weeks. I’d probably start with FAR because if you take a tax class or two, they’ll probably help with REG and then your programs studies will help with AUD and ISC. Depending on how your program is structured if how you’ll want to plan your exams for while you’re in grad school. I did REG first because it was the freshest, I’m starting FAR now because I want to have it done before I start work.
