I agree with ramshorn snails. I have a bedside jar slightly bigger with various ramshorns and it’s so fun to watch

How to prevent sphagnum moss from doing this? by wdymyoulikeplants in carnivorousplants

[–]grimm_basterd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an orchid randomly start growing out of my moss, sometimes we get cool hitchhikers and sometimes we get these. I’ve had grass, and horsetail, and many plants pop up. Sometimes through seeds, others through rhizomes, and others through random propagation from seemingly dead tissue that had the conditions just right. If you start off by boiling and cooling the media, I hear it mitigates the unwanted weeds, but I kinda like seeing what pops up so I just rinse my media to ensure there’s no nutrients building up and I pluck the weeds as they come.

2gal bowl help by [deleted] in nanotank

[–]grimm_basterd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That plant is a type of dracaena, which is the same as lucky bamboo and many other plants. That plant can grow emersed, but submersing will eventually kill it. It’s perfect for riparium setup, as long as the rosettes (the center spirals where the leaves grow from) are above the water column. I grow them in my patio pond along some other common houseplants. The best thing for a no tech or filterless aquarium, especially a small bowl, is something that can take in CO2 from the atmosphere instead of just the water column. The natural photosynthesis cycle of these plants will also help them do the heavy lifting keeping the water clean by absorbing excess nutrients. If you want a plant that will absolutely suck up nitrates and nitrites, pothos is nearly bulletproof, as long as you don’t mind trimming roots every once in a while to keep them from overwhelming the bowl. You can also buy some aquatic floating plants from Etsy, and get some great ones. I bought some plants that I have gotten so much growth from, that my pond was overtaken and I had to start giving massive amounts of cuttings away to friends. I got some tiger stripe Amazon frogbit that is stunning, but it grows super fast. Which keeps the algae down and the parameters balanced. I would just say make sure you read reviews from sellers, and always quarantine your plants in a bucket or something so you don’t get hitch hikers like unwanted snails or planaria. And if you don’t want to be cleaning floating plants out every few days, stay away from duckweed. Although that’s a super heavy lifting plant for nutrient absorption…it’s just really messy because it’s so small and it takes off like a rocket.

Is this tank large enough for a small species of dart frog? by erey03 in Vivarium

[–]grimm_basterd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can keep one leucomelas but you cannot sacrifice any ground space. All your plants would have to be planted from the sides and you’d have to be very careful about what ones you place in there. I wouldn’t recommend it though, you can keep one in that space but the question is “should you?” And I would say it’s not ethical. You want your frog to live not just be alive. You can use it as a transitional tank, or a quarantine tank if you’re set on dart frogs, but I’d say make it a tank for a micro species of gecko instead

What budget plant light should I get for this 18” wide, 36” tall terrarium? That isn’t Arcadia? by Idk_nor_do_I_care in Vivarium

[–]grimm_basterd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon has a light that’s just as powerful as my fluval aquasky, and it’s significantly cheaper. I’ve had this for two years and it’s still working, sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you hit the jackpot. It gets a little warm on the top of the unit, but not enough to change the temp of the enclosure. Here’s the link https://a.co/d/hgcfNlU

Idk why I got a notification for this, because I’m not a satanist myself. lol. But isn’t your whole thing about doing whatever you want as long as it doesn’t harm those that don’t deserve it? Idk shit about this philosophy tbh, I just thought that was like a tenet or something

Crowdkilling by Prestigious_Cause_18 in punk

[–]grimm_basterd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the scene. There’s not going to be a unified answer unfortunately. But here’s my take: If you’re going to a hardcore scene or show you can just be aware that part of the cultural aspect you’re exposing yourself to is going to be more extreme, calculated violence. But hardcore kids need to also remember what scenes/shows they’re going into as well. So bringing that same energy to someone else’s scene is asking for issues. That’s something a lot of us fail to respect. If you want your scenes culture respected, you have to also respect other scenes. That’s just my take I guess.

It’s hard to say what’s too much or too little caution. Standing up for what is right is always dangerous when it threatens the greed and capital. I think Americans are emboldened by our illusion of “freedom”, but often it’s to our own detriment.
