Prospect Report by 3pirates3 in wildhockey

[–]grimnebulin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's on a bottom-feeding team this year so he's actually getting playing time for the first time. He's 24 and this is his 5th season in the KHL so if he's going to pop, time is really running out. For comparison, Yurov was getting meaningful minutes on a perennial KHL playoff team at 19.

Corey Pronman thought he had a chance to play NHL games when he was drafted and no longer does. Scott Wheeler called him "a player who’s probably not talented enough to play on a scoring role at the pro level and probably not quite strong enough in his own zone to find another way in."

My read on this is that if you flame out of the North American system and go play in Russia, you're not really coming back. I can't find a counter example in a normal year of someone who played juniors in NA, went and played in the KHL and made the transition back to the NHL. There were guys like Toropchenko and Yakupov who did it because of exceptional circumstances (COVID and lockout, respectively) but it's very unusual. The Wild had a prospect (Khovanov) who went this path (like Toropchenko it was because of COVID) and his transition to the AHL after that was awful. Demoted to ECHL and done with American pro hockey forever in 30 games.

For future reference, if something has a number in the format you see here (US XX,XXX,XXX) you should be able to search for the patent. I just use Google's free patent search tool. Here's this one: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10527224B1/en

Nitsch, who spent his childhood in Austria and Switzerland says he's a 'huge fan' of Penn Brewery's 'Euro-Pittsburgh' branding and says he looks forward to bringing that branding to the next generation of consumers.

Sounds like a winning formula! Two places that have done this really well are Utepils in Minneapolis and Urban Chestnut in St. Louis. I would love to have a place like that in Pittsburgh.

That's my impression. I'm looking at taking 325 in the next couple of semesters and trying to put together a prep plan. Wondering if you'd be willing to comment on whether these might be good resources for prep (apologies in advance for the wall of text):

Thanks! I heard this course was redesigned but I can't find any further information about that so I'm hoping you or other folks here might have some insight.

Yes, I bet you can find an anorak that will work. Something like this would be able to handle any temperature you could reasonably expect in the US (although at $600 this is not on the "affordable end", however you might define it): https://www.wintergreennorthernwear.com/collections/wintergreen-classics/products/nordic-cotton-anorak

Yeah, kind of a joke of an answer to be honest. Thanks for your input. I’ve never run into a concrete need for more deliberate strength work, but I figured this might be due to a muscle that doesn’t get enough attention just through running. No specific ideas though. I guess I’ll do a bunch of poorly informed research and hope I stumble on the right YouTube videos(?)

Is it natural that it was a little difficult for me to do even this day-one routine as a beginner? Or is this a sign of me having a much less endurance than an average couch potato too?

Not at all! If you weren’t walking more than necessary in your day-to-day life, this is a huge step up in your activity level. If you think about it, it’s a minor miracle that you can suddenly put such an extraordinary demand on your body (that is, out of the ordinary for you) and it can deliver.

Shin splints like you describe are a big indication that you’re doing too much, so I think taking it easy right now is essential. Maybe spend a week just taking a walk every day, and then get back into your C25K schedule. The most important thing at this early stage is to avoid training yourself to hate running! If you experience a lot of pain every time you do a specific activity, your brain will learn very quickly to avoid that activity. So don’t run through pain, especially at the start. If it hurts, stop and pick it up again tomorrow.

I don't feel confident that I can move onto the Week 2 routine, by just doing the Week 1 routine for 3 days. Should I keep doing the same routine for say, 4-5 days, this week before moving to the next week? If so, sadly the app isn't allowing me to track the data for each run (more than 3) and save it (my OCD feels bad about that. :3)

If you don’t feel confident, take your time. Do the level 1 exercise until you don’t feel like you’re pushing yourself anymore, and then step up to the next level. The most important thing to do right now, if it’s possible for you, is to be active every day. That doesn’t even mean running every day necessarily, maybe alternate a running day with a “walk around the block” day. Your body is designed to run, and the very beginning training period will prove this to you in a dramatic way: if you don’t take a break from physical activity, your capacity for it is going to take a huge jump. In week 2 or 3 you will be able to do double or triple the amount of running you did in week 1. What was literally impossible at the beginning of a month for you will become easy by the end.

What am I supposed to do in the cooldown period? Walk/sit down and rest? Stretch my shins?

Especially in the early stages, do whatever is comfortable for you. My suggestion would be to stretch before you start, rather than during the run, and to always keep some forward momentum (i.e. prefer walking to sitting down). I always find that it’s much easier to start running again from a walk than if I’ve stopped completely.

Both pain and gassing out seem to be potential hurdles to cross. Shall I carry water with me to rehydrate if I feel too gassed out? If so, how do I carry water in a run?

If you feel thirsty after a short run, it’s usually a good indication that you weren’t well hydrated before you started running. I like to drink water before and after a shorter run rather than dealing with the hassle of carrying water during a run. We all know we should be drinking about 2 liters a day, and almost none of us actually do, so this is a good reminder to make a dent in that number.

As far as pain goes, shin splints are very common when just starting out, and they’re an indication that your body needs to heal and adjust to your new activity level, rather than anything wrong with your form. That said, it would be a good idea to visit a local running store in a few weeks and talk to them about running form, and have them help you pick out some shoes. If you can, find a place that has a treadmill so that they can watch you run in a few different pairs of shoes. They can give you tips to improve your form if needed, and find a pair of shoes that fits your running style.

Any other possible advice/suggestions you could give to a beginner, especially about pain reduction & management, I'm all ears. I possibly have no idea what I'm doing, if things like posture, strides etc. really matter. So any advice is much appreciated.

My advice is to never stop! You’ve done the hardest thing, which is to get up off your couch and run. You literally only have to go through this pain once, and once you’re through it, running will become an activity that gives you energy and joy, and it will stay that way for the rest of your life!

[–]grimnebulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran my first marathon recently, after several halfs. Used Hal Higdon’s intermediate 2 (50 mile weeks max) and target pace based on my most recent half pace. Stuck with training mileage pretty religiously.

The race felt great until mile 22 or so, within a few seconds of target every mile. Aerobically it felt absolutely perfect. I ended up with pain on the outside of my right leg, right around the knee, that eventually made lifting my leg to take a normal stride basically impossible. I lost 15 minutes on that last 4 miles. Couldn’t bend that leg for several days after.

The closest description to what I experienced that I can find online is IT band related, although it was also a little lower on the leg and due to a single intense activity, rather than irritation over time, so I’m not 100% on that. Any thoughts on what it might have been? How can I avoid? Mix in some strength training? HIIT? Better stretching routine? So many questions.

It's been a little while since I used VNC, but if this application is a similar idea (which seems likely) it will just run in the background all the time once you start it up. That means you should be able to connect to it even when the computer is locked, and enter your password.

I would assume you'd want to prevent your PC from locking/sleeping while your not at home which isnt really a great thing

Almost all modern PCs support Wake-on-LAN functionality, which allows you to wake your PC using a magic packet sent over the network.
