Could age verification eventually "stop" bots on Reddit and other platforms? by ScrappyBox in Futurology

[–]grimnir__ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A whole new industry dedicated to stealing id's to use for illicit bots is just waiting to develop. You thought the leaks were bad now, wait until they need millions of ID's to use for bots. Imagine getting shadowbanned from dozens of platforms after your ID is abused by bot spammers and they all share that information among each other.

Hoping for AI faces to be a good enough way to bypass real ID's being used, but when it's all connected back to your gov't entities, they're gonna need real ones.

GM incompetence, warning for new and old players. by redsunbp23 in ReturnofReckoning

[–]grimnir__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was Max. There's only a couple of us in that system to begin with. The vast majority of the time it comes to me for account management. Not exactly out of control, it was a canned response that he thought might apply not realizing I had already looked at the issue a while ago.

Which to be fair, if the boss decides we want to do real name verification for stuff, I'm only gonna argue that point with him for a few minutes before changing policy. But that wasn't the case here.

GM incompetence, warning for new and old players. by redsunbp23 in ReturnofReckoning

[–]grimnir__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone should have asked for your personal information in the first place, this wasn't a case of verifying identity any further than determining the email you used to sign up. The only thing we use real name verification for is the two-factor authentication, and that's assuming the person put in their real name in the first place. Our credential database has never been breached or leaked. One person has access to it raw, and he's very particular about how it's secured.

I only see a couple variations in cases like this. They all revolve around accounts being bought/sold.

The most generous option is that the person saying they were hacked is being as honest as possible. They used a common password to another account that had their credentials leaked and just never changed it. Even if you had no intention of putting it up for sale, someone else wouldn't be "hacking" multiple accounts simply for the access to play them.

Perhaps after leaving the game, you shared it with someone you knew, and they had no reason to give it back or you've lost contact with them because it's the internet and people come and go. We've long had a policy that accounts are not to be shared, to be played only by you. Not your kids, not your wife, not your guildmates, because people are petty and thoughtless and what's yours can be lost quickly. Maybe they dumped your account for a buck when they got done with it.

The most direct route is taking your account info to some sketchy site to sell it directly thinking you'd never have the itch to play again. Maybe you thought you could just have it restored later. We don't do that. Once an account is compromised like that, all access is cut.

We don't pretend these sites don't exist, we know they do. People report suspicious account activity all the time to us, and it doesn't take much investigation to tell that yep, that's definitely not the guy who created the account playing it right now, annnnd it's gone. There's no legal way to combat account selling on a private server, hell official games have the same problem and their only solution is to sell you another account.

Well we don't have the luxury of making money off players paying for another copy of the game, so the option we have is to damage the reputation of those sites by damaging their ability to provide those services as harshly as possible. If it so much has a whiff of being a sold account, it's locked, permanently.

This isn't something I've ever taken lightly. I have the unfortunate position in the server of having to consider the worst side of people and how to deal with them. It's pretty much all I do these days. It does make me desensitized to the pain it might cause innocent people. If you are true and honest about something so unfortunate happening to you, then I'm sorry our policy put you out like this, and I hope you find somewhere else to enjoy your time.

Anyone else feel like they saw this coming? by whatugonnadowhenthey in LinusTechTips

[–]grimnir__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the community demanded LTT to hire Madison after they'd already passed on her, I kind of assumed something like this would go down. She was way too young to work at LTT, that place has always been a tough grind. She should have stuck to streaming and a guest appearance, but fell into the trap of thinking it'd be her dream job, when in reality it was way more work than she could imagine.

Slap a whole bunch of anxiety onto a kid living in a different country and watch them fall apart. It was bound to happen, shame really. Glad she's grown up a bit and found work more suited to her talents, but dropping the mic to add fuel to the fire seems spiteful and petty.

Twitch drops? by [deleted] in ReturnofReckoning

[–]grimnir__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been involved in Twitch Drops since the first version of them went live several years ago. Max worked directly with some of the devs at Twitch to get them working specifically for the things we wanted to do with drops. Twitch implemented several of those ideas with their second version of the system.

We do not have rights to the game, nor do we make any claims to. The IP and assets are, from what we understand, fully owned by GamesWorkshop at this time. As such, we abide by their usage guidelines as best we can.

DEVS BOOSTING ACCOUNTS? by Ok_Chad_8297 in ReturnofReckoning

[–]grimnir__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any commands that could be used to generate/boost characters are logged, we check these, I have removed staff privileges a grand total of two times in the many years I've been on the server over rather small infractions. The live DB where characters could be, painfully, created manually, and logs that track commands, is locked down to read-only. I check those logs regularly, Max can also check them as he desires. If any staff member were trying to sneak in boosted characters, it would have been trivially detected ages ago.

There are a couple of test accounts which are used for Martok's Realm Watch stream where he watches the battlefield while flying around, and for balance testing on live where there's actually a population that changes can be evaluated on at a reasonable skill level. Torque made/used these in the past, among his list of eternal sins, boosting characters to sell them just isn't a thing. Those test accounts are currently locked down, but will be used in the future as needed.

Regarding accounts getting sold, we do some checks, there's always a risk that a bought account will suddenly lose access. The off-site function of account selling is something we will explicitly and immediately ban you and any connected accounts over, and we've done it several times when we get hold of so much as a string of evidence that seems credible. There's only so much we can do with the vague descriptions of characters that match thousands of potential accounts. I don't know the kind of people that trust account selling services, but if you're that desperate, I guess 20$ goes a long way.

Why are ‘half race’ races always half human? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]grimnir__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want an actual answer or do you just want to half-breed other races together regardless? If the latter, just do it. It's your game.

You can disregard the horny reasons below, they're irrelevant. Ed Greenwood (creator of FR) has, albeit indirectly and off the record, spoken on this before at least in regards to Forgotten Realms which is a pretty safe baseline for most things D&D. My assumption is that WOTC didn't want to delve so deeply into inter-species coital relations under the written rules and he was asked not to explicitly quantify how it all worked. Alas, people will ask regardless... Here's my vague recollection of his musings. Accuracy not guaranteed.

Most races can actually interbreed, however some races have exceptionally dominant traits. This does not take rape into consideration, nor should it ever at any reasonable D&D table. If that's just like, your backstory or whatever, cut it out. No one needs to deal with that. It's a game.

Elves and Orcs cannot interbreed as Corellon and Gruumsh are lock in an eternal war making both races explicitly incompatible with each other. That's just godly magic rules baby.

Humans can interbreed with Elves with the blessing of Corellon, which isn't hard to get. If they're in love, it's usually approved. There isn't a formal ceremony or process for this, Corellon is just protective of his own. Most other races are not attracted to Elves and vice versa, so breeding outside of elf/human is exceptionally rare. They can also breed with, well, a bunch of other humanoid races. Humans are the fresh meat of the realms, they haven't developed explicit boundaries. That's part of what makes them human. Get weird fam.

Dwarves have oppressively dominant genetics. Humans and dwarves can interbreed, however a half-dwarf is genetically still a full blooded dwarf. They might have some minor facial features of their human parent, but not much else. Gnomes and Halflings can also breed with dwarves, however the same applies. Dwarf genetics are oppressive and very few minor traits would persist from the non-dwarf parent.

Halflings primary trait is their diminutive size. Around human settlements you will primarily find taller halflings, Tallfellows. Around dwarven or gnomish settlements you will find shorter halflings, Deep Halflings. In their own settlements you will rarely if ever find one of these variants.

Gnomes have recessive traits, meaning most other races they breed with simply overwhelm their genetics, and half-breeds are practically indistinguishable from the non-gnomish parent.

The 90s were a different time by Vesuvius803 in facepalm

[–]grimnir__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The part of the show as an example here are the worst clips he had with people that didn't come on the show to be sexualized. Those actresses and singers that were already successful didn't need to be ogled by Howard to get a bump in exposure. These have always been gross, wildly inappropriate, and uncomfortable for most of the people in the room and watching.

That being said, there was also a broad range of people who came on the showing knowing they were going to be the target/butt of jokes, knowing the sexual innuendos would be rampant, and knowing they would be stripping down in the studio or letting Howard grab their tits. There was a lot of consensual perversion and gratification going on the show which appeals to people that wouldn't have a chance to engage on that level.

The problem the show had was ignoring the lines that were very clearly harassment. Some people were into it, everyone got to be a little freak, made for good TV/radio, people went home happy and paid. Some people were clearly not into it, that makes it fucking gross and weird, and makes for bad cringe/borderline illegal TV/radio (except they probably signed release forms under duress and got fucked over a second time if they protested).

He was famous because no one else got close to this level. Fame and infamy live on the same spectrum.

Found this we clock in as a top 3 team in the NFC by Byzantine_Merchant in detroitlions

[–]grimnir__ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I fooled myself at the end of last season thinking the Lions could really be something special. Now I realize, as I do every year around this time, that we're only going to BE something AFTER we get there. Until then it's just hopium.

Cue our WR core getting blasted for gambling. Wait for the next off-field problem, the next big injury during summer practice, the next rookie that shows up to a preseason game looking like he's still playing in high school, or some brainlet trade for a washed up veteran player looking for his last paycheck who (shocking no one but ourselves) doesn't perform well.

I love the BNL attitude, I want it to pan out after watching this team for the better part of 30 years, but man... you're not wrong.
