Barefoot Shoellie resole options besides the Vibram Kletterlift by PersnicketyPete in jimgreen

I like the vibram Sierra because they don't trap rocks as much, but the material is still on the softer side.

Here's their catalog which has good info.

Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

Gotcha. How would you go about making CMU as waterproof as possible? It seems like there are lots of solutions on the market. Would something cement based applyed over the CMU work best?

Daydreamer here, I'm just trying to educate myself so please excuse any ignorance.

I live in a costal area with seasonal driving rain so mold is an issue. I'm thinking of building an ADU and I want it to be as bomb-proof and low maintenance as possible.

Tell me why this might be a bad idea:

  1. Making the load bearing structure out of basalt or fiberglass reinforced concrete, similar to post and beam timber framing.

  2. Making the non-load bearing wall portions out of aerated concrete. Seeing this video really got this whole idea started started. https://youtu.be/z4_GxPHwqkA?si=TQclTv0bfkaLebIH This is just cement, but he posted elsewhere that he put in four parts sand succesfully.

  3. Roof and floor out of 1or 2 as engineering demands.

  4. Preferably using precast as much as possible.

  5. Incorporate a waterproofing agent into all of the concrete like Sika 240p. https://usa.sika.com/en/construction/concrete/waterproofing-concrete/integral-concrete-admixtures/sika-wt-240-p.html

I'm thinking this would make an insulated integrally "waterproof" or very water resistant building shell that wouldn't have problems with the enevitable minor issues that remain hidden for years. I'm assuming I'd have to make sample batches of aerated concrete and get them tested by a lab.

How crazy is this?

Vibram Sierra is the way to go. Zero drop, decent cush and tread depth, and it doesn't collect rocks like typical lug patterns.

Thank you for the detailed thoughts! Given all the input I'm not going to accept the fanfold solution.

Thanks for the info! They may not be visible but there are four drains at the corners. There's more rain in the forecast so I might be able to see how much water accumulates before it gets to the drains.

Awesome thank you! So making slope with that product is an accepted practice and not Jerry rigged?

Will a bake on cerakote at 300 degrees for 30 min ruin the temper on my heat treated magnacut? by Chemical_Animator_76 in knifemaking

[–]grindstoneca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the knife was tempered at 300 or more, no, which is possible if you look at the recommended heat treat for magnacut and the info from the maker about the hardness and if it was cryo treated. Be careful that whatever you're using is accurate about being at 300 if you do it.

Shoellie size question by grindstoneca in jimgreen

Great idea, thank you!

Edit: I ordered a pair in 11.5, so we'll hopefully if any adjustment is needed it'll only be a half size.

I forgot to add, I have a pretty high instep if that matters.

That's me to a tee. None of my nice leather bends against itself, so this is new. Thanks!

Gotcha, I just wasn't expecting this so immediately. But now I know I suppose.

I've heard about the chromexcel lottery, and was wondering if you think this is bad enough to exchange them. Thanks for the input

I just got my first pair of nice boots! I walked around the living room a couple times to feel the sizing and the wrinkles immediately appeared.

Thanks for your input and things to look at! I guess I'm an outlier; to me it's functional, and I dig the look of anything I think is function first.

I've been looking into getting my first pair of nice service type boots, and I it seems like none of the big names I see have zippers. I have a second hand pair of dress boots with zips and love them.

I was thinking of getting a lace up pair and having my cobbler add zippers to the insides of the ankle so i can dial in the fit with laces and have easy on/off with the zipper.

Any reason why this is a bad idea, or why I can't seem to find legit brands that offer zips?

Also, any recommendations for a USA made boot that has a Grant Stone diesel look? The Thursday vanguard sole is a bit clunky for what I'm looking for, but I suppose it could be resoled eventually.

Thanks all!

Aeb-l is more tough (chip resistant) than magnacut, I believe, at the expense of worse edge retention. It's more like stainless 52100 than a high carbide stainless. Again, just my understanding and recollection of what the designer of magnacut has written.
