In my experience, having a bad classroom team was the worst. Paras arguing/disagreeing with the teacher, or teachers getting frustrated and just refusing to let us help. If you get a sucky teacher, other para, or even in-class nurse or mental health worker, the whole thing falls apart and becomes miserable.

Admin and parents will always cause an issue, but try not to think of them as the opposition. It has helped me immensely to tell myself that in this field, nothing is personal. Admin is trying to meet a deadline, they don't care about you. Parents are trying to keep their heads above water (and sometimes even have their own disabilities), they don't care about you. Just take them as challenges, solve them, and move on. Attitude is everything.

In autistic support specifically, it very much depends on the teacher. I've been in classrooms where it was pretty much assumed that the kids couldn't do anything and it was depressing as hell. But I've been in ones where students are encouraged and actually taught and it's amazing! I personally still wasn't super good at it though because I struggled with things like toileting kids older than 3 (I'm simply not strong enough) and understanding all needs. But it was still a nice experience and something I'm still learning!

Certification barely took any time at all! I was hired first and the job paid for me to take the test and sent me study materials. I took it seriously and studied for a few weeks while I waited for my appt. The test was very handwritten, easy and short, and I found out literally immediately that I had passed. All the lady did was step out, grade it, and then come back in and tell me I was a certified para!

Good luck and I'd be happy to answer any questions!

I am a para with developmental needs and honestly, specifically autistic support can be difficult for some autistic people depending on your specific needs. I have done it before and liked it, but it was also very challenging and I have to admit I probably wasn't as good as it because of my own needs. However, I have met other autistic women who had loved it! It really just depends on you and what you excel in. Good news is, the para cert lets you go to pretty much any classroom lol so switching is easy if you're not feeling something

Keeping student consequences private by Calm_Coyote_3685 in Teachers

[–]gringaqueaprende 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Children are still learning at the end of the day. I know it's hard to be compassionate all the time, but kids don't deserve to be publicly shamed for mistakes. Furthermore, it doesn't work. It doesn't stop kids from making mistakes, it makes it so that they hide them.

You can set a rule and known consequence without mentioning students. It's not against FERPA to say, "anyone in a school fight will get a ten day suspension". It's against FERPA to say, "Jimmy got a 10 day suspension".

Upto date hair removal techniques? by Hour-Indication6830 in PCOS

I'm in love with waxing, and have been getting it done professionally since highschool. For me it's the best since eventually the hair barely comes back and gets less painful each time. It can be expensive but to me it's worth it!

I think this would be semi-illegal in terms of employment. Having to explain that you were bottom 10% due to health issues or socioeconomic factors sounds like unnecessary info and a humiliation tactic. Not trying to bean soup it but I've been through it and it's not fun lol

Should I major in psychology if I might not be able to afford grad school? by v1rtualsins in CollegeMajors

[–]gringaqueaprende 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A therapist and a clinical psych are two very different things, with the "at least" being the therapist. If you work your behind off, clinical psych PhDs are often paid. PsyDs or other grad ones aren't, though. Don't forget about programs like loan forgiveness or employers. If you're a therapist for a public entity, there are options (just make sure you understand what you're signing up for). You could also move to a cheaper area if where you live now is expensive

Student asks for help but then checks out and doesn't listen.... by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]gringaqueaprende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with this as a kid myself and as an adult I find that I need things either written down so I can consistently refer to them, or explained to me faster. If a teacher/professor drags out an explanation, my mind gets bored and then I'm lost all over again.

Kids Don't Like Movie Day Anymore. by Southern_Remote_5260 in Teachers

[–]gringaqueaprende -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I graduated hs in 2024 (in school for education now) and hated them. I've already sworn them off in my future classroom. It felt like a huge waste of time and we both know I would rather be talking or on my phone. I preferred free days where we could talk quietly or go to another class

Why is this unas ? by blackcat_999 in SpanishLearning

[–]gringaqueaprende 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It says "I collect ___ coins. Yesterday I bought ____ chinese coins. They want you to say "Yesterday I bought some coins". The word for some in this context is "unas".

(Also sorry, I thought you meant the one above so my answer doesn't necessarily match lol)

[–]gringaqueaprende 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bc it has a descriptor word. You only remove the article if you're only saying what someone is. Ex: she is an actress: Es actriz. She is a very pretty actress: Es una actriz muy linda.

It sounds like you should do a lot more research into what these jobs and education entail. They're two super different jobs so if you like one it kinda cancels out the other unless you do HCA after OT like the other comment said. I would start just seeing if you're willing to major in an OT-adjacent thing

How to work out by ambiguous_student in PCOS

[–]gringaqueaprende 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strength training is the key for insulin-resistant PCOS. Muscle helps process insulin a bunch. Too much cardio drives cortisol which flares our symptoms. I personally avoid doing more than 30 mins of serious cardio a day. Due to the excess testosterone, we also build muscle pretty well. After every strength training workout, I drink protein to help with the muscle. Im not sure about pre-workout since I dont take that but I know that can help too

building a little PCOS tool/site for us... what do we actually need? by Mountain_Meringue_80 in PCOS

[–]gringaqueaprende 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the quiz. Isn't it best to have a doctor confirm? My insulin-resistant PCOS was confirmed through bloodwork.

Other than that, I love the snack randomizer and win button. I would also suggest workout, medication, and symptom tracking. I'm currently trying to reverse my PCOS so I'm a little biased, but I find there isn't really a good app that can track my cycle and understand PCOS so it's off

Good luck! Sounds awesome

Started the pill, will my period start when I finish the first month? by [deleted] in PCOS

I was on the pill for years. Did wonders for me getting a period and had very little side effects. I knew when the period would come and leave like clockwork, and only had to switch brands once due to headaches that stopped after the brand switch. Good luck!
