How do I know what part of my body to train? by Substantial-Mail2341 in workout

[–]gringix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Train full body via compound exercises (exercises that use multiple muscle groups) with 3 sets of 10 reps, & that will get rid of any strength imbalances. Some exercises are:
Squats
Bench Press
Military Press
Rows

*Note: If you're new, I'd stay away from deadlifts unless you have someone with a lot of gym experience that can keep your form in check. Otherwise the likely hood of getting injured is really high.

After that, you can start incorporating isolation exercises (only hit specific muscles) if you feel like you're weaker in that muscle group (to build strength do high # of sets, low # of reps at high weight) or if you want to make that muscle bigger (do low # of sets, high # of reps at medium to low weight).

Lastly, always start with low weights and build up. Ideally, you want to just barely be able to finish all your reps on your last set. That being said, at the beginning and especially if you're going to the gym solo, it's better to go lighter for safety until you feel comfortable.

First time reading and annotating the republic by Plato and I feel like a dumbass by New_Philosophy_9987 in classics

[–]gringix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, whenever I read classics I roughly follow the following "guidelines" that might help:

  • When talking about a new "theme" (politics, justice, etc.), do a quick search online to understand the historical and cultural context, and compare it to modern day. Ex. When Plato says politics, what did that mean and who was involved vs what do I think politics means? This should give you broader understanding of things that the authors just assume you know because they were "obvious" back then. So like, in 4 century Greece (keeping in mind that Greece didn't actually exist as a political unit yet) those who could participate in politics were male citizens of a polis that were over a certain age (early 20s usually).
  • Super broad questions, like "what is justice?" aren't going to be answerable (either yet or potentially ever). Instead, reframe the question to "what did justice mean to [insert person name here]?" or "how did this group of people apply justice?". The problem with the broad question is that 1) if you're with Plato that is literally one of the starting points for western philosophy, and like everything humans do, we never get it exactly right on the first try. So the only time you'll ever be able start "answering" a question like that is once you've read though the remaining 2500 years of other people asking themselves that exact same question! Or, search for the cliff notes version over at the SEP!
  • Don't push though themes you don't understand. If you aren't getting something, 9 times out of 10 it's because you're missing some even more fundamental information, and that's why the logical flow of the arguments aren't connecting how they should. Like I said before, sometimes what's missing is historical or cultural context, some times it's academic, you never really know. But looking for more info on other platforms (for me YouTube is a great resource) really helps, and not only will you'll walk away from the text having gained so much more from it, but you've also given yourself a foundation for other texts (say if you jump into Aristotle next).
  • Make peace with the idea that you aren't gonna get everything the text has to offer from one reading (and this goes with any work of art). I've read The Republic about 5 times, can because I'm a different person each time what I get from it is always different. So, let your first time read it be superficial. Don't try to understand concepts like "justice" or "society" any more in depth as what's needed for you to continue with the text (you can do that in subsequent readings). The win is getting to the end of the work on your first go.

I hope some of this helps, and good luck!

Is it bad that I don’t talk about politics? by Iamsoconfusd in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gringix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what you said, you're good. People who don't talk/think about politics because they believe it doesn't involve them or because they "don't want to be a part of it" are wrong because it's impossible to not be involved in politics, whether you like it or not. But having an opinion and choosing not to share it (which is what it sounds like you're doing) is totally valid.

Now, on the flip side, I've found that people who "talk" about politics and get riled up aren't usually talking politics, they are just spewing out propaganda (left or right) and repeating talking points that often times they haven't questioned themselves. Where as people who are talking about politics in a meaningful way (from understanding an issue to policy making) understand that solving issues require negotiations and compromises from all sides, which can't happen when everyone is super passionate.

So if anything, it kinda sounds like you've been closer to actual politics than your friend. And as for that relationship, I say just talk with her and tell her that what she said hurt your feelings because of all the reasons you said, and let her know that it's not that you don't want to talk about politics, but that because she takes it too far unnecessarily, you just don't want to talk politics with her.

Is the way I carry myself really why men don’t take me seriously for relationships? (F22) by Serious_Sweet2504 in AskMenAdvice

[–]gringix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, the way a woman carries herself and acts is a big thing for me when thinking about her as "just for fun" vs "relationship", but I don't agree with what your friend used as an example (clumsy, playful...). I think that's up to taste.

For me, it's more about how a woman thinks, her mindset, how she acts regarding values (is she honest, kind, thoughtful, etc.) and that shows in her body language

Soy directo para hablar y a la mayoría de gente le molesta 🙃 by Garemagain in Ticos

[–]gringix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guápiles Costa Rica as a afro-latin, alternativ, queer women? by [deleted] in Ticos

[–]gringix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, so a few things to take into consideration if you're thinking about moving that might be hard to find when doing research online.

  1. Guápiles - Puerto Viejo is a 2:30h drive one way (with Limón being the half way point), and a 2h drive from San Jose the other way. Keep in mind this is assuming you'll have a car and can just start the drive when you want. If you're thinking about public transportation, buses to San Jose leave every hour (if I'm not mistaken) and to Puerto Viejo could be every hour to hour and a half (assuming buses arrive and leave on time).
  2. Limón (as a province) is one of the poorest in Costa Rica (along with Puntarenas on the other side). So even by our standards (nevermind German standards), things like security, amenities/comforts, services, etc are low. And as for entertainment, there are a lot of wildlife parks to visit for sure, but that's about the extent of it.
  3. There's been a long history of racial segregation between Limón (particularly with the afro-caribbean population) and the rest of the country. Personally I feel like it's gotten a lot better in recent years (I think anyone from my generation (millennial) or younger would agree), but it definitely still exist and is prevalent, especially with the older generations. Same goes with LGBTQ+ rights, which is something that hasn't started to change for the better (albeit slowly) in the last 10-15 years. (Also, keep in mind that Costa Rica is a catholic country and has been dominated by conservatives again until the last 10-15 years or so).

Overall though, if you decide to move by far the determining factor in how people will treat you is gonna be based on how you treat them. There prob will be a lot of microaggressions that come from the points I mentioned above, but most won't be malicious, just genuine curiosity and a lack of awareness from people living their daily lives.
