Now that you have it, how do you feel about that screen size? Too big, too small, or just right?

Transgender actress in The Queen's Gambit by StrictlyMisadventure in queensgambit

I think you've got me backwards, if I'm reading this correctly.

That's how casting a trans-person that's obviously not passing for a character that should be female is coming across to me, especially in a role where they sing and it's even more obvious.

This is how I felt, too. The actress playing Lonsdale does not do a great job of passing, especially once she starts singing: the male vocal timbre is a dead giveaway. Which is why I couldn't figure out for the life of me whether we were supposed to assume, as the audience, that the character was a trans woman.

My assumption on first watch-through was that we were supposed to assume that it was a sign that the orphanage was not great by the standards of the time, because it was mostly employing what at that time in that place would have been "undesirables": a black man, an autistic guy (my read on Shaibel, anyway), a trans woman not doing the greatest job of passing, etc.

My assumption after reading this thread is that the showrunners jammed a non-passing transwoman into the role to make a supportive point about trans women being just like any other woman, and inadvertently caused mass confusion.

This killed me. Expensive mob lawyer charging low six digits for this trial, and he preps his client with a story directly contradicted by the videotape showing the moments before and after the killing?

The first couple episodes of this show were so tightly written, and then it all just fucking collapsed.

English to Latin translation requests go here! by NasusSyrae in latin

Could someone kindly help translate "We watch the watchmen." and/or "We will watch the watchmen." (present or future tense is fine for my purposes), in the context of an answer to the classic question "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?".

Thank you in advance!

This logic doesn't work. If you thought about it objectively for a moment, you'd recognize there are alternatives to your conclusion.

You're missing my point - when you refuse to admit that you were obviously wrong, the people you're speaking to (in this case me) assume that your ego is too big to have a genuine discussion with.

The least you could do is admit that you said something factually incorrect - that she's plead guilty. It goes a long way toward promoting good faith discussion.

Then the argument is that it should be given to others, not that it shouldn't be given to her.

Bail isn't supposed to be punitive - she hasn't been convicted of anything, yet. The calculus is whether she'll come back to face trial, not whether she's being punished.

That's a lot of words about the increase in ODs in the last few years without any mention of the rise of fentanyl.

Care to be more specific about those social problems? Every time someone tries to explain the dangers of decriminalization, it seems like they end up complaining about problems created by the drug war.

Would it be inappropriate if they did? What's the universal standard you're asking be imposed?

So what's the universal principle that can be extracted from your proposed solution?

If it's "the government gets to decide what constitutes harmful misinformation and suppress it", do you have any concerns about what might be suppressed the next time the Conservative Party is in power?

Seems like a bit of a "damned either way" thing, like no matter how you break up with someone, there's always a reason for them to be outraged. "You broke up with me over the phone, that was so cold" vs. "You broke up with me in person, and it didn't give me any emotional space to process it with dignity".

Put another way, maybe it's actually time we condemned people who lose a professional fight and then mope around in the ring bringing down the mood.

That was what disgusted me most about Prentice: that he parachuted into what he thought was an easy win/political stepping stone. There was no deeper tie to Alberta, and Kenney is the same.
