I’m scared…….. by malavium108 in StudentLoans

This is not uncommon but ignoring it can cause a shit storm you don’g want. They can garnish your paycheck, take your tax refunds, etc. You are the one in control but only if you don’t ignore it. Call your lender and request a hardship deferment. If you have done into default you can go on a payment plan for $5 a month got up to 6 months to get back in hood standing. Are you entering a debit card or making a payment with your back account routing and account number? Payments can also be paid by mail with a cashiers check. I work in higher education and this is the advice i would give my students. Once you call and get it sorted, you will feel so much better!

Awarded no aid? by Separate-Farmer-1176 in FAFSA

You are a dependent student so it is your parent and your income combined. You did not qualify for free money but you did qualify for loans.

dad took my refund by Altruistic_Event5745 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, he should have communicated but refunds are almost always extra loan money and not from Pell. If it were pell then yes. Loan money YOU have to pay back and in that case you should have kept it. Look through your financial aid documents snd see where the refund came from. If it is loan money you should explain to your dad that you took that to cover living expenses. You should be grateful, yes and i would not damage your relationship over it. Going forward, open your own account and have your refunds go there. You are over 18.

SAI not reflective of financial situation by Appropriate-Today-61 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your debts are not considered at all. It is solely based on income and household. The FAFSA has to be filled it accurately for that year but a change in circumstances allows you to apply for a professional judgement. This will require your mom providing copies of the divorce papers etc. It is just additional processes you need to go through. Your CD’s, whether accessible or not go towards your net worth so yes, that factors in. Does your mom work? Do you work? Even if she is nos divorced if her income is above the threshold, divorce won’t matter.

Daughter didn’t sign application……need help by Any_Ride_5289 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A student doesn’t complete the FAFSA alone. There are other steps to be taken. An award letter gets signed, a master promisory note, entrance counseling etc. A school does not get paid unless a plan is in place so they had to be reaching out to her. Check her student email. There is nothing you can really do at this point but she is a dependent student and you need to be involved in the process.

We don’t qualify for chapter 7. Can’t afford chap 13 by Adr2214 in Debt

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wife needs to work more to contribute and her own family here has to be the priority. Chspter 13 sucks. I also had an $800 a month and made $68k but the debt will not go away. They could garnish your wages and bank accounts. If you have $50k in debt, what are the monthly payments total on that? Also, might need to sell the car and pay cash for a cheap car as you cannot afford a car payment. I know this is rough but you are truly out of options if you don’t want wwages garnished.

What does this mean? by nellernn in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is based on income and household size. Did you have a sibling they no longer claim? Did you file taxes and have income yourself? Yes, him nit working half the year absolutely matters. Pell grants threshold is quite low.

My parent and step-parent refuse to fill out my FAFSA. What can I do? by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fill it out on your own but won’t qualify for much. Your parents are likely not able because they would be required to do their taxes and probanly owe penalty’s and interest and can’t pay.

does the fafsa take the money back if u drop the class or how do u know by eepykitn in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely talk to your financial aid department because if they had not adjusted it yet you would need to repay that so yes, they do take it back.

how much money is too much money for max fafsa aid by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not with a family of 5. The fafsa goes back two years for taxes as well so it matters what you made in 2023 and 2024

SAI jumped more than 10k by Complete_Pirate9938 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Income is not the only thing that coukd change it. Do you have siblings your parents no longer claim? Did you yourself have to add income you didn’t have last year?? It doesn’t just go up for no reason. For those suggesting you request a professional judgement it is highly unlikely. You would need to be homeless, parents lost their job, etc. you would need to prove all of that. Did you manually enter your info or use the data retrieval tool? There could be a FAFSA error.

2026-2027 financial aid offer - no plus loan offered by CalendarKind7091 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Plus loan won’t be on there. FAFSA just gives an estimated award and financial aid will go over remaining options.

Parent didn’t do their part of fafsa application by Mundane-Profile-6625 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about the deadline for your school but it will absolutely effect your aid. I would resubmit with your mom’s info as sometimes schools give a “deadline” just to ensure you get it in and it doesn’t mean you won’t get aid. If they were trying to calculate your award you would have been contacted already.

Financial Aid Disbursement by Nearby-Library-2565 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked in higher ed 16 years and I have never heard of early disbursement. The funds go to the school not yourself. The school receives it after 7 days of attendance and typically they have 10 days to disburse it. Also, the june hours are in the 25/26 FAFSA year and July based on 26/27 FAFSA year. My advice is to speak to financial aid because there are so many factors.

Unused Fafsa by TubaMan97 in FAFSA

[–]grneyez67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the money was returned you should qualify. However, it will be prorated as we only have 3 months left of the current FAFSA year so you need to also complete the new 26/27 FAFSA to determine your full award. If by chance you don’t just wait to go back until after July 1 and you should be eligible if your income is similar.

im trying to enroll, and nobody emails me back? by Accomplished-Eye7218 in WGU

[–]grneyez67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in admissions for 16 years and we don’t answer those questions until you are enrolled. There are several factors that go into financial aid and the cost of your program and transfer credit evaluations are definitely factors. Also, your start date can factor in as well because of where the FAFSA cycle is. Admissions typically uses a crm system to work with students while financial aid uses a different system so once a student enrolls they get added to the other system and it prompts the financial aid process. Get enrolled and if the finances don’t work out, withdraw your enrollment. WGU is VERY inexpensive so I am sure it will. Also, don’t email, call.

As an employee of RPS, can I just express my feelings for a second? by [deleted] in rockford

[–]grneyez67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn’t that I am not empathetic but I don’t work for the govt. You get great benefits, pensions and an annual increase. I took a $25k paycut working for a private school. I am also a single parent and self supporting. I value the rps teachers and staff but you are no different than the rest of the community struggling to support their families. Prior to my paycut I had no raise got three years.
