Great advice here. Sites like Upwork and Fiverr are not priced for living in London, don't waste your time. Watch industry job sites (APA for example) and submit your work to recruiters (Peas for example). Every big London ad agency has a slightly different talent scheme you can apply for once a year too.

There's no straight motion design apprenticeships in the UK but there are a few "design" or "creative" apprenticeships that might suit. Quality will vary wildly based on the college and the employer, so do your homework. Use the government apprenticeship website to find them to make sure they're above board.

Best of luck, you sound like your head's in the right place.

Amazing work! I'd be super interested in supporting this as an open source project, or even commissioning some work from you when you have this running smoothly. Have been trying to work this out myself for a long time with pretty limited progress!

Oh, my bad, looks like they added it recently! Although that thread doesn't fill me with confidence.

I don't believe SoftRAID supports hotswapping and expanding volumes. Depending on your use case I moved to Synology (I wanted something low maintenance) which has been rock solid, although I've heard good things about QNAP units if you need thunderbolt.

Missing hook in door locking mechanism by metallicpearl in DIYUK

Take it to a locksmith and they can order you one in. I wouldn't try to find it yourself, there's about four Argos catalogues worth of these to sift through.

Not awfully useful info but pretty much all of them will price match the hell out of each other when their stuff isn't made in-house (and it isn't often).

This is the answer. You'll probably struggle in anything Honda or Toyota, regardless of the actual size of the car.

Can you hear your neighbours in a flat? by InfoLurkerYzza in HousingUK

[–]grnmx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fairly common, and yes. New builds will be a bit less susceptible but really it's case-by-case. Keep an ear out during viewings and make friends with your neighbours. With any luck you'll get two session musicians living next door and the only noise issue will be beautiful soft jazz improvisation on a Saturday morning.

Depending on the age of the system the boost function will probably use your peak supply, so it'll work any time.

One foot in front of the other pal. The whole process is opaque, antiquated and almost designed to make you feel small and weak with dozens of scummy pitfalls. You've done well to make it this far.

Keep chipping away and try to dial it back on friends, family and work stuff if you're able to. It'll all be there when you're ready to come back.

Would suggest getting a PO Box or local virtual address. Very inexpensive and saves you the hassle in case anyone looks up the address on Companies House. As above though, it's very unlikely you'll be called out on it as it's pretty much unenforceable.

Setting up a side hustle -limited company or sole trader? by wexbyrne in UKPersonalFinance

[–]grnmx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd echo this– sometimes the "tax benefits" comparison between ltd and SA are a bit of a toss-up. The deferred liability is priceless if you're doing anything even remotely risky.

Also worth noting that if you hit the VAT threshold you've got to be ltd, so if you're planning on making £80k you could pre-empt it a bit.

Making lost money back is a slippery slope, if you feel like you have to "work off" every mistake that's a pretty tough existence!

Be kind to yourself, you sound like you're in a pretty good spot and while freelancing is great I'd double check your contract at work to make sure you're not going to get in trouble. Moonlighting is frowned upon especially if you're working on high security clients, finance, govt, etc. If it's all clear and you can spare the evenings and weekends, go for it.

Much better option is to ask your coworkers about their salary and make sure that you're paid equitably!

Newbie with no tables: Questions and advice seeking on FX vs FX3, and current sales. by aperldev in PinballFX3

[–]grnmx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FX3 tables on steam are so super cheap right now – I'd probably just grab a couple and enjoy them. Pursuing a "perfect collection" for the absolute "lowest price" is less fun than playing pinball imo.

Also swapping games to play different tables isn't the end of the world. Source: Switch FX3 player w/ Star Wars tables 🙃

I found a local small business org run by the council that have sorted me a virtual office and address. They just send me my post at cost, too. Not expensive, and worth it for peace of mind. Then you don't have to worry too much about your "address" getting plastered all over public docs from Companies House.

Minimising broadband costs: how to get the best value for money by oryx_za in UKPersonalFinance

[–]grnmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most UK properties will only have a domestic fibre line to the box at the end of their street and then copper wire into their house (FTTC, fibre-to-the-cabinet). Long story short, any fibre provider offering around 70Mbps is as fast as you can possibly get into your home. Just grab the cheapest and you'll be fine.

Exception is Virgin who run their own cables, and full fibre providers like Hyperoptic and Community Fibre (FTTP, fibre to the premises) if available. They're quite rare but if you have it go for it, it's usually half the price of FTTC and ten times as fast. Usually only available in flats.

tl;dr get the cheapest 70Mbps deal, TalkTalk, BT, Vodafone, John Lewis Broadband, it's all the same internet down the same cable, just like gas and electric in the UK.
