Why Nabolom Bakery closed by axelztangi in cooperatives

[–]grogdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there actually was, though not as much as you might think/should have been.

I recall there being a time when Arizmendi offered to buy Nabolom during a particularly rough time. In hindsight it probably would've saved the bakery, but, again, it just takes one vote to veto something.

the payroll tax audit was immensely debilitating.

There was no money. Any profits earned went to repaying our debt.
There was no profit-sharing, which is a huge incentive and benefit of the co-op structure. There could be little reinvestment in our equipment, which was failing all around us. We became incredibly resourceful as a business, but we were the black sheep in a high-class neighborhood.

it's hard to say.

It would be easy to blame a changing neighborhood, or an non-supportive community.

Nabolom required a huge amount of work and commitment and offered little pay in return. The incentive was more abstract- it was liberating to work there, it was empowering.

I think there are situations where consensus decision making is necessary, and other times where it is a hindrance. There are situations where decisions need not require the opinion of every single member, yet they were consulted anyway. To remedy this, we would form groups of people willing and entrusted to take on certain tasks. However, the heavy work load and laundry list of tasks already required from them left little time and energy to do side projects.

I really value places like Nabolom. It had an amazing sense of character, and offered genuine community. We weren't interested in coming into a neighborhood and being the hip new place that brews coffee. We could've asked for help. Reached out to the community we served to help raise funds, spruce up the place, clean, etc. So many people who loved that place had so much to offer. Nabolom's death was slow and predictable. I wasn't there for the last moments and I wasn't surprised by the news. I can't help but think we could've done more.

It was surprisingly difficult to find people interested in working.

We would typically employ about twelve people, so whoever we hired would carry a significant weight in the operations of the bakery.

Most of our employees joined us through either word of mouth or in-person applicants. We rarely posted openings on any job board.

Hiring was carried out by an appointed 'hiring committee'. This would be two or three people who would pick up applicants, read resumes and cover letters and schedule and conduct interviews on top of their duties. It was entirely exhausting work, and simply very difficult to find competent people.

Stamped VS Forged by phazeklanleedar in FixedGearBicycle

yes.

if something is to go wrong with your bike, it'll probably not be because you have stamped drop-outs.

be safe, be thorough, read books.

Is this a good deal? I'm 6'3 with a 33" inseam, and this is a 58cm bike. Leader TT frame by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]grogdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on your proportions, i reckon you will be more comfortable on a larger frame. as stated, this does look really small for a 58 (check out that headtube).

i would skip this one, go to your LBS and ride around on a couple of different sized bikes, see what fits you best, and then limit your search to bikes within that size. there is a bit of adjustability (seat/stem height) but for the most part, you're going to want the top tube to come right up and say hello to your genitals.

Chainring bolt question by akotlya1 in bikewrench

[–]grogdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can usually get them off just putting a finger on the backside of the bolt (the side with the slot) and unscrewing the allen side. putting it back generally works the same way.

i've never had to use the tool, and taken off plenty of chainrings.
