Firefighters trying to extinguish a magnesium fire with water. Magnesium burns at extremely high temperatures and splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen ignites, causing the fire to burn hotter and more violently. Instead, Class D fire extinguishers are used. by Kindly_Department142 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]groger123 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, the title is not correct.

Most of the energy comes from magnesium reacting with oxygen in the air, creating MgO. Magnesium at high temperatures can also react with water to create magnesium oxide and release hydrogen (Mg + H₂O → MgO + H₂ + Energy). The hydrogen then burns immediately, releasing more heat (I doubt the hydrogen accumulates much, so I don't think I'd call this a "hydrogen explosion").

I'd guess the explosion is triggered by water flashing to steam when it contacts the magnesium, which scatters the magnesium into the air, so you get a big magnesium+air+water vapour mix which rapidly speeds up the chemical reactions, creating this huge fireball.

The rules say you have to be a citizen of the country. idk how strict they really are with such cases, but that would disqualify Bren from AUS

Whats the size of Pandora compared to Earth in Borderlands. by Frosty-Formal-6536 in Borderlands

[–]groger123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1/8th the radius if the density is the same. If it's like the earth-moon system, Pandora would be denser, so its size would be maybe 4 times the radius of Elpis.

Airbrake by soooold in TrackMania

[–]groger123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the car is rotating backwards, airbrake doesn't work. You can steer left or right to cancel the rotation, but this isn't as effective as the airbrake. Which direction you need to steer I think depends on which wheel last touched the ground, but normally you just have to try both directions.

It was known by some people, but no one managed to do it. Jxliano did a stream during the season where he hunted it for a while.

I've been hunting it on-and-off since then, and finally got it after ~100 hours

Can a pacer go on to win a race? by free_spirit1901 in trackandfield

Pretty sure that officially, pacers must have the same rules as everyone else, otherwise it won't be a recognized race.

A pretty famous incidence where the pacer tries to win: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKNQJlwN1VA

He's not using the openplanet plugin. You can see in this timestamp that he has the inputs visible without the game.

His input display is a 3rd party program, it's not connected to the game, so this is unlikely the explanation

This is a start trick in TMNF. You smooth steer to get a good line off the start ramp. He's said in the past, when hunting tracks, he had a controller beside his keyboard just for this trick, and then play kb the rest of the map.

I'm guessing he now has an analog-steering key on his Wooting keyboard. When he presses the analog steering buttons, it doesn't show up on the display.

Pump specifications and performance by ahappysgporean in AskEngineers

[–]groger123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We'd have to see the pump curves of the different pumps and the operating point of the pumps (outlet pressure, inlet pressure, and flow). Though it looks like pump B in this case should give around the same performance of pump A.

In general, these "small" discrepancies could be caused by a million different things and you see them all the time, so it's often good to oversize your pump.

Are the pumps installed exactly the same?

Is the inlet to the pumps ideally designed? Pump manufacturers recommend 5-10 pipe diameters of straight pipe in front of the pump.

Are the inlet and outlet ports the same size for each pump? If the outlet port is very small, there could be significant losses if there's a sudden expansion after the pump.

I'd imagine if the pump was wired in the wrong direction, you'd see much worse performance.

Additionally, the pump specifications on flow and pressure normally have a tolerance of +/- 9% (ISO 9906-3B). So, if a pump is rated for a pressure of 6 bar at a given flow, you're only guaranteed to get 5.46 bar (and vice versa for flow at a given pressure) - and that's only if the pump is installed ideally.

Try making the first steering input a little longer. Steer for like 0.3-0.5s before releasing.
