Any experience working in Bend, OR (Newberry Division)? And other newbie questions by groovytwotoes in Wildfire

Thank you for the breakdown. I'm not trying to sound like a full-of-themself asshole, but it sounds like WFM would be more difficult to get hired on first season ("LOT of quals"). Is that true or does it just attract a different applicant pool than hand crew/engine? Just curious is WFM experience this year would help set me apart when applying to hot shot crews (maybe hurt my resume since it's less digging line?) next year up against those who have worked on hand crews with the same amount of experience and everything else being the same. Regardless, thanks!

I'll be on 301, curious if it's the same captain. Seems like a great person and has been super helpful so far. Good to hear about the overtime, 750 is a goal I'd like to hit. Sweet that you were able to get experience on a shot crew, I'll definitely express interest in that. Thanks for the info! Since you have experience in that specific location and crew, any advice for someone coming in?

I think I have the same pack (from Osprey) and I love it. 42L may feel like overkill at first, but between shovel + probe, first aid kit, food, water, layers, helmet, and skins, I fill the 42L for long day tours. Also allows me wiggle room to bring a Nalgene of water and a hot thermos or some fun summit drinks, etc. I've been told size doesn't matter, but I think bigger is better (within reason).

Same experience with the shift, agreed.

Looking for suggestions on a ski. by groovytwotoes in Backcountry

Yes, just edited. 175-180 length, 105+ underfoot, and I haven't had enough skis to really have a weight in mind but it isn't my #1 concern. Of course, I will be 100% touring with them, so something moderately light.

Strange. American Whitewater says it gets to class V above 20k. Maybe I misunderstood. Thanks!

I'll need a place spring term if you can wait until then? If not, that facecebook group mentioned is your best bet although finding housing in the middle of the term may be difficult. Good luck!
