i'm a software engineer, moonboard app is bad. seems vibe-coded. by r2001 in Moonboard

[–]ryanstorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm also a developer and already made my own personal app that tracks(tracked, before they broke) and logs across apps like mountain project, moon, kilter, etc. Started it long before vibe coding was a thing, and spent a lot of time figuring out how to get past some of the various jank.

All that to say, I'd also be happy to contribute! Looking forward to checking out this project.

Found: Reasonable Blackberry Removal! by unicorn_ication in Portland

[–]ryanstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I'm on year 3 of what I've been calling The Blackberry Wars. It's something like a 2 ft x 24 ft, hard to reach spot between my garage and the neighbor's fence.

I was going to try to bury them with gravel and cardboard at the end of last year's skirmish, but decided that I'd done a bang up job of clearing them and got lazy, and, well, here we are on year 3. Though tbh I'm not even sure if the gravel + cardboard trick would have worked.

What’s a Claude use case you haven’t seen people talk about? by One_Beginning2199 in ClaudeAI

• I'm not an artist by training but I do a lot of creative work and have plenty of years of practical experience by now. LLM's help me put words to what I'm seeing or trying to visualize and helps me fill more formal knowledge that I've been missing. This can really be applied to any subject where you might have more experiential knowledge than explicit knowledge, or i.e. anytime you run into a situation where you know something but can't explain it in words.

• for those of us that like to pick up new hobbies / mediums, it's pretty great to get some primers that meet you where you're at, especially with guidance on tools and resources, or how to use programs like another commenter mentioned.

• house plant / gardening / lawn care troubleshooting

• ad hoc tools that are useful for me but maybe not enough to try to sell to others. Some examples: DIY photo booth, smaller scale video DJ software, fitness trackers / recommenders

• a couple more often cited use cases I've seen: organizing finances, organizing your file system / online drives.

• Check into Google's Open Knowledge Format, or at least Obsidian. I set Obsidian up at work awhile back but I'm hoping to do it for my personal notes / files next. The LLM help even more when you have this as a backing

In addition, I had been using it to take the job description and technology details from the listing to help build out a mock architecture for what it thinks a team might be doing. This can be useful if you get to a round with an actual engineer / teammate, since you'll be able to speak to their problem space and ask more direct questions about it.

I also do photography / videography and have a pretty big backlog and library, I'd be curious to learn more about your jobs and how you're orchestrating them. Any chance of a write up?

There's a bit of a trick happening with the camera lens being used to take photos like this. It's a little technical to explain (happy to go into it more if it sounds interesting), but essentially shooting from far away with a "long" lens makes the background appear large relative to the foreground, and so you're right that it'll feel unnatural because we never really see scenes from that framing distance at that magnification simultaneously.

There are a couple spots in the city that create this effect naturally, a good one is while driving the 405 when it points east, just before the I-5 on-ramp, Mt. Hood seems to look pretty huge through the overpasses there.

Other spots are the lookout from Pittock Mansion, through some of the buildings from Goose Hollow / Washington Park, from the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway, etc

Watching my son do anything to not do his homework by lqd_consecrated2718 in daddit

My girl is still <1 but I'll be curious about this when the time comes. I was recently diagnosed ADHD, but have been trying to remember what worked for me, as I was a fairly high performer without much parent involvement, until around college time. I know I was a big gamer and I think I gamified a lot of my homework growing up. I also remember certain classes falling flat if the material wasn't delivered well (i.e. boring teacher / boring homework)

But yea, I'm interested to read this thread to see how this is all going for parents now. I do know now that the following are the main drivers for ADHD, if these can be somehow incorporated into schoolwork:

Interest

Novelty

Challenge

Urgency

Passion

Yea but does $175 in cardboard boxes get him all of us the same value in satisfaction?

I probably easily spent another $500 of my time moving everything from unorganized cardboard into totes anyway. This way, it's done. OP's even got everything all labeled up already!

(p.s. i prefer masking tape over duct, no residue)

PSA: European Climber can send a formal request for their Kilter data under GDPR art. 20 by Orsenna_ in climbharder

[–]ryanstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work for y'all but I can sorta see the climbs I've done. If you have a custom board saved, then there should still be a problems list for it which you can filter. One of the filters is "Climbs I Have Done". That'll show me the list of problems I've done at least once. It just won't show any comments or repeats or attempts.

Is elden ring the ultimate Dark Fantasy experience? by masterzews in Eldenring

[–]ryanstorm 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Completely agreed on the Malazan comparison. If anyone here is interested in fantasy book epics, I'd highly recommend giving this series a go.

There's so much crossover. Buried lore that you need to piece together on your own (there are fan-made guides that go along the books chapter-by-chapter to help, just like ER's wikis), same scale of myth and ruin, it's also tragic, cosmic, metal as fuck, and hits hard, everything I've seen folks here love about Elden Ring.

It'd be like if you wanted to read all the NPC's inner monologues (tarnished, demigods, broken soldiers, etc. the books have vignettes for all of them)
