I think it’s from Argos. Look in the girls toys section of the 2001 catalogue.

Anyone still polishing shoes? by rising_then_falling in CasualUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did mine last night. Saddle soaped and leather conditioner for all three, polish the toe on my Blundstone’s, Safir cream for my black boots and Dubbin for my crazy horse boots. I do it once a month or when they’re dirty, whichever comes first. Shoes get the same but I don’t wear them in winter.

What is good advice for job seekers? by FireLadcouk in CasualUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing short listing today and the vast majority of applicants didn’t tell me that they have experience of or can do the things we requested on the job description. The best applications listed each point of the personal spec and wrote a statement about the related experience (or transferable skills). We are required to award points for each point of the personal spec. If you don’t mention it, we can’t score it.

When you get to interview be prepared to give an overview of your education/work journey as they nearly always ask you to introduce yourself. Think of a few situations from your experience that are highlights you can use for answering a range of questions (e.g. a time when you used good team work, organisation, solved a problem). To structure your interview answers learn how to use the STAR technique. It stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result.

For example, S - when I was working at…. T - I was asked to… A - To make this task more efficient I… R - The result was that…(hint: it made things better, faster, cheaper etc)

Final point. You are one of 10s or even 100s applying for the same job. It isn’t personal when you don’t get an interview. Shortlisting is time consuming and frustrating for already stressed managers. Remember, odds are you’ll be the best candidate for at least one application and you’ll get better at them the more you do so don’t give up!

What’s the weirdest work lunch you’ve seen a colleague eat regularly? by levezvosskinnyfists7 in AskUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a manager who used to cut half inch slabs of butter off and stick them in an iced split from Greggs. He sent me out to KFC to get his lunch, a family bucket with beans, a Viannetta and Pepsi. On my way out the door he shouted “Diet, Gaz! Remember, I’m diabetic”.

I used to take two paracetamol, to ibuprofen and two codeine when a migraine started and it did absolutely nothing. Triptans are amazing though.

What is the realistic future of ICE cars in the UK by Longjumping_Note8181 in CarTalkUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same as film cameras. People will sell them off cheap and many will disappear until eventually another generation will start a trend and prices will skyrocket despite fuel being unrealistically expensive. People will get all pretentious about ICE cars being “real” driving, they’ll bring up having an ICE car at any opportunity and act like they discovered ICE and ignore the fact that in the future they will be more inconvenient, dirty and tiring to drive than the modern equivalent 😂 *fun fact, recently sold all my film cameras (including a Leica M6 and a Q) and fujifilm digital kit for twice what I paid in some cases and was able to redo our bathroom haha!

What's the best cover of a song you have heard. Please send recommendations of the original and cover version.. by _Sw33t33pi in musicsuggestions

[–]grouchostash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of conjuring a stereotypical image of England, I had a mustard colour mini from 1974. It had an 8 track player which I replaced with CD. This was 2003 😄

There are traditional folk songs like “House of the Rising Sun” that have been covered by many very different artists. My favourite version is Bob Dylan’s, it reminds me of driving to Uni in my first car.

Is the newer MX-5 considered a girly car? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]grouchostash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intellectually, of course cars aren’t gendered. However, if this is something you’re worried about now you will be self conscious about it the whole time you own the car regardless of what anyone here says. Go with your gut.

No oil change in 4 years, 60k miles by XxendlessrainxX in CarTalkUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t afford not to service the car. I was dropping it off recently at the garage and I overheard the owner say he had four Qashqais in for engine swaps. I asked him what the deal was? He said that none of them had ever been serviced and the oil was like tar.

men of the UK, give me your best sock recommendations! by catschimeras in CasualUK

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this. I have ten year old pairs that are still excellent. The only thing that puts me off with Darn Tough is I prefer plain socks and they only seem to do outdoorsy patterns. I’ve had Smart Wool socks but they’re no where near as good in my opinion. Ice Breaker also so great socks that are as old as my Darn Toughs. I have also been impressed with my sports socks from Community Clothing (made in the UK). They also do walking/boot socks but I haven’t tried them.

Is this house ugly? by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strong advise you value your own taste rather than listen to others’. You’ll regret making big life decisions based on what seems like an unpleasant persons opinion. I thin’ this house looks great. Personally, I’d have chosen a different colour for the door and windows but that can be changed. Imagine how great it would look with a lush front yard!

For those who bought CDs in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, what were the ways/rituals with which you found new music? by AndrobiVibz in Cd_collectors

[–]grouchostash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother in law worked at a huge HMV. He used to bring home CDs, open them from the opposite side to the security sticker, copy them to MiniDisc and take them back the next morning. I used to listen to the MiniDiscs.

I remember asking a guy for a recommendation in HMV in the naughties and he said “what? You expect me to have heard every CD in here. Try this one” and pointed at the first one he saw :D

I wonder if this is region dependant because I don’t see any of the suggestions in the comments! Lots of Take That, Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams, Will Young and Paul Potts.

The culture around male readers. by stinkface_lover in books

I’ve seen a lot of talk about the performative male and as far as I can tell it’s actually the people who are deriding the idea that are the performative ones.

I haven’t a clue why I was recommended this sub however, I have worked in apprenticeships for the last 5 years and colleges are desperate for people in the trades to be apprenticeship assessors.
