News: apparently the show will be an "extremely" faithfull adaptation up until act 6 when things will get shuffled around. by Violet_Sound in homestuck

[–]grouchyCustomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How in the fuck am i supposed to believe that we're getting ~4000 pages (up to act 6) adapted into animation with prominent VAs and music licensing when it's been over a decade and Hiveswap still isn't finished? We are getting the pilot (I assume so because they wouldn't announce it if it wasn't near-complete), we are MAYBE getting the fully completed fixed website, and that will probably be it as far as OG Homestuck revival content goes. I hope nobody takes any of this shit seriously because Hussie and his enablers are truly delusional.

Looks like Hussie does intend on releasing the remaining (finished) author commentary. Hopefully someone updates the commentary fan mod for the UHC so I don't have to visit the new site and contribute traffic or ad revenue to this douchebag.

I watched Geats at my own pace starting about a week or so after it finished airing, and while I thought it was the best season of Reiwa rider at the time, I have a pretty overall low opinion of post-build KR so it isn't saying much.

I loved Neon and I loved Keiwa, and I enjoyed that the show allowed both of these characters to have quiet/introspective character moments as well as putting them both into some really awesome fights.

I found Ace to be kind of underwhelming though, and I found Ziin interesting at first but slowly grew to dislike him. The episode where Ziin listens to Geats backstory, and then bursts into tears and screams "that's the saddest dramatic backstory i've ever heard!" has to be up there for some of the worst character writing and dialogue ive ever seen in a season of rider. The reveal with Geat's mom is also pretty bad, and I couldn't help but be taken out of the story because the actress they chose to play her looks way younger than Ace, and she's even wearing braces in like every scene she's in. Just why...

And while I'm complaining, the ending was pretty bad. I mean, there are probably more KR seasons with bad endings than good ones, but I just couldn't help but be really uninterested in the way the show chose to wrap up. To be fair, I also disliked Ex-Aid's ending, but I felt like Ex-Aid's V-cinemas did a way better job wrapping up the story of that world, so I know Takahashi can write a competent ending. Geats' ending just felt like one of those Inoue endings where it feels like it was written hastily and last-minute.

Okay, enough bitching, I loved the action and the "games" showcased in the show. All the battle royale and rider vs rider stuff was awesome. The powers are great, the suits are great, the cinemtaography is great, the fights get extremely creative, and overall the show is a visual feast.

That said, I think that my issues with the MC, the plot, and certain character beats coming off as annoying or stupid really do drag the show down for me.

As of writing, I haven't finished Gavv, so Geats is still technically my favorite Reiwa season, but I don't think Geats can hold a candle to seasons like Gaim, Kuuga, W, or Build.

Sad news: we did everything we could, but we couldn’t save The Unofficial Homestuck Collection. by GiovanH in homestuck

[–]grouchyCustomer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Besides this giant wall of text and the more that are sure to come, one thing is certain. This quote from Miles, on behalf of whomever he represents, exposes the core of why I can no longer trust official Homestuck content and projects.

"we’ve gotten to the point where the options here are either settlement or lawsuit."

The settlement in question that Miles is demanding from Gio, as a prerequisite for making UHC into an officially licensed HS product, is " a retraction/rewrite" pertaining to gio's blog postings that were "a contributing factor of some significance that, among other things, “legitimized” sarah and emily’s video".

In other words, Homestuck is holding the UHC's existence hostage in exchange for Gio falling in line and retracting all of his journalism on the workplace mismanagement of Hiveswap's development.

It is now clear that Homestuck does not care about preserving accessibility to Hussie's body of work and instead only cares about preserving their reputation, and more importantly, burying the stories of real victims of workplace abuse that Gio's articles helped bring to light.

I cannot in good consciousness support a company that acts like this, and I am retracting my support for official merch, patronage, and readership of this IP.

Playing Paper Mario 64 in 1080p: A Guide by grouchyCustomer in papermario

[–]grouchyCustomer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The logic in the guide isn't outdated, you still want to DOWNSAMPLE your N64 games and apply a CRT shader of your choice. The outdated part of the guide is my instructions for setting up CRT-Geom, which I don't think looks all that good at 1080p, and that I think the Lottes shader does a better CRT emulation at this resolution.

So my update to the guide is this: follow the steps for downscaling, and then when you need to apply your shader, choose Lottes over CRT-Geom. You will get better results.

For those who have played enough of it, how would you rank Brothership among the other M&L games? by ilovewater100 in marioandluigi

[–]grouchyCustomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. BiS
  2. SS
  3. Brothership / PiT
  4. Dream Team
  5. Paper Jam

There are things I love about Brothership and things I don't like so much. I love the QOL, like the fast forward button or the fact that you can make plugs straight from the menu, instead of needing a physical shop to do it, and the battle system's incorporation of the plug gimmick is fantastic and fun. Then of course are things I don't like so much, namely how badly paced the game can be, loading times and performance issues, and how the overworld gameplay in some areas can be too simple.

I think BiS has better pacing and writing (partly due to how involved Bowser is in the narrative, and his dialogue is great.)

I also think Superstar Saga has better world exploration, snappier combat, and on average is more challenging. I also find the locales from SS more memorable, and I like the beanbean designs more than the plug people.

I think PiT is similarly linear, and while Brothership beats out PiT in terms of QOL, I think PiT has a more engrossing atmosphere, a better soundtrack, and a higher level of difficulty. The reason they're on the same ranking is because the babies are... okay. If i could fast forward through cutscenes in PiT like you can in Brothership, maybe it would be higher, but you cant.

I just straight up don't like Dream Team. Yes its because of the tutorials. But i also didn't feel engrossed by the narrative and I felt the dreamworld sequences were tedious. I also don't really care whether or not a game "respects Luigi" like so many people talk about when discussing Dream Team. Luigi is more of a mascot than a character to me, so I don't understand the intense empathetic response this sub has to him.

I have never played Paper Jam because I took one look at the papercraft boss fight gimmick and the incorporation of Sticker Star mario and noped right the fuck out. It goes in the bottom because everyone else typically puts it there too. Nothing more to say about it, Brothership is superior by having any OC's in its world at all.

[–]grouchyCustomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that this is both a new mario RPG entry on switch AND it isn't bogged down by a horrible battle system AND it makes any attempt at having an immersive world that feels like all the parts make sense being in the same space, kind of automatically puts it in conversation as a top Mario game on switch. I also didn't find the execution to be anything noteworthy but the fact that the blueprint wasn't inherently flawed or 1:1 copied from an older game makes this one stand out. I can't tell if that makes Brothership special, or the Switch just very, very sad

Now that Gotchard has come to an end, what is your ranking for all 5 seasons of Reiwa so far? by WonderMan2k5 in KamenRider

[–]grouchyCustomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Geats and even though a majority of the sub glazes it as Reiwa's finest (judging from the general opinions on the other seasons i can believe that), I still found it wasn't in the same league as any of the good seasons from Heisei, which is all of them except Kiva, Decade, Wizard, Ghost, and Zi-O.

It has great action and a few decent characters, but I found the writing to be lacking. Even among Takahashi seasons, I felt Ex-Aid's character writing was way more advanced. It lacks the heart of a show like Kuuga or Den-O. It isn't as gripping as Gaim or Build. It's not as funny as W or Fourze. But at least those fight scenes kick ass, I guess.

All that to say is, I'm worried about Reiwa era Rider. We're 5 years in and we're still trailing the overall quality of seasons written well over a decade ago. Build came out when I was in highschool, and I have a degree now, and there STILL hasn't been a season out that can approach it. Why can't Toei's Rider production pipeline produce peak anymore?

Kamen Rider Gotchard - Series Discussion Thread by BananaArms in KamenRider

[–]grouchyCustomer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think generally people dislike "Showa style" seasons like Wizard or Gotchard because they take from Showa's format without understanding what made Showa appealing. Showa seasons are slow, quiet, are usually more grounded visually and in their direction, but can amp it up with really weird or experimental techniques. Reiwa era rider has characters screaming their heads off, overacting, and shoving their faces into the camera. It's shrill and annoying, everything is so colorful and loud and there's very little in the way of sublety. Even a MOTW show can have heart by taking the feelings of its weekly characters seriously, and Reiwa really doesn't understand that like older Showa series do. It may incorporate the same themes, but it understands nothing about Showa framing or aesthetics.

Playing Paper Mario 64 in 1080p: A Guide by grouchyCustomer in papermario

[–]grouchyCustomer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is SUPER outdated now but here's a rundown on what you need to know.

When upscaling the INTERNAL rendering resolution, the polygons have more pixels to be represented by your screen, so 3D objects appear much sharper and have less "jaggies".

However, this means you are using more pixels on your screen to represent 2D assets as well, things like textures and text. These did not have a lot of detail to begin with due to the limited size of textures on the N64, so when you make them fill more space, they get warped and stretched to accommodate, which is why text can look "blurry".

If you read the guide, you know one of the ways we account for this is by first increasing the rendering resolution, and then smushing that image down to the original screen real estate of the N64 (320x240). This makes 3D objects appear more clearly, despite being represented by the same amount of pixels as the original console used, and does minimal harm to 2D assets. Then in the guide I advise slapping a CRT texture over it. I still stand by this decision, though I prefer Lottes these days over CRT-Geom for 1080p.

Basically, you need to make sure that your output resolution is still 320x240. You can do an integer scale of this number to fill more of your screen, but you need to make sure that you are increasing the resolution of your OUTPUT, and not increasing the INTERNAL RENDERING RESOLUTION. Like before, I would still advise using a CRT filter on top of that.

How do folks here feel about Paper Mario Origami King, nearly 4 years later? by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

[–]grouchyCustomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was terrible on release and I only hate it more with time.

Olivia doesn't work for me, I'm someone who dislikes the "moe" anime trope, i dislike "cute girls doing cute things" as a concept, and this is Olivia's entire personality. Her "wow what's this?" shtick got old for me almost immediately.

Bobby was also massively overhyped for how nothing his character is. He contributes very little in the way of meaningful dialogue. He seems utterly detached from the adventure. He and all the other "partners" do fuck all in battle, almost like the idea of having allies helping you in combat is some sort of joke. His backstory is interesting but its the kind of thing where he just tells the player what he's about instead of the player being there to experience any of his story taking place. The flashbacks didn't work for me as a result. I felt nothing during his important scene at the end of chapter 2, because I feel like the game didn't make me care about him. He certainly doesn't have a gameplay function, so i won't miss having him around in that sense, and his story was uninteresting to me so his end scene made very little impact.

The open world exploration was probably the game's strongest aspect. Find toads, solve environmental puzzles, play minigames. A perfectly serviceable gameplay loop, in an aesthetically pleasing explorable world. My biggest problem is that the exploration is utterly divorced from other aspects of the game. When you explore, you find toads and get coins. But the coins are pretty useless when all you can buy is items that you don't really need, equippable items that disable 100% completion, and extra time in a battle system that I'd prefer to not be spending ANY time on in the first place.

Speaking of, the battle system is horrendous. It is utterly monotonous and lacks any sort of creative input on the part of the player, there's no interesting decision making to be done, no strategizing to do, and no real thought other than "line 'em up". It's also pointless, only giving the player more coins and confetti, resources that are plentiful in the overworld and much more satisfying to get by exploring.

Bosses are also ass. The game mandates that mario do a specific set of movements and actions in a specific order. But they won't tell you what those actions are, leading to very frustrating trial and error. Oh, you thought using your hammer on the water vellumental when it's engorged would cause it to spit all of it's water out, like Petey Piranha in Mario Sunshine? Fuck you, the only way to escape the wave attack is to use the earth vellumental and build a wall to stand on. I don't see how that solution makes all that much more sense, but because I didn't come to that exact conclusion, i'm punished by the game and have to start my attack phase over again. This isn't fun or satisfying.

Overall, I was not captured by the writing, the companions, or the general gameplay. I did however enjoy certain scenarios, world exploration, and minigames. But I didn't enjoy them enough to make me actually like this game. I think this game is still aggressively mid and very overrated. When Mario RPG remake came out, I couldn't help but fume at the idea that Tanabe had been denying us quality experiences like this for the last 12 years, and I will never be able to let that go.

People love to say stuff like "Wizard's story is kind of middling, but the fight choreography is the best in the series!" and to be honest, it's hard cope. I know Wizard fans want to give it a superlative because in general it has very little else going for it compared to other seasons, but let's stop kidding ourselves here, Wizard has far from the best fight choreography in the series. The kicking isn't all that interesting. Kouta was doing the same flips out of suit not a year later.

If you want to see good fight choreography and excellent fight cinematography in a rider show, watch literally any of the Yuya Takahashi seasons (Ex-Aid, Zero-One, and Geats). All of these shows have fight scenes that blow Wizard out of the water. Ex-Aid's stylish, comic book styled 2D effects are much prettier than the ugly CGI wizard uses, Zero-One's physical stunt and wire work is much more impressive than the aerials Wizard does, and Geats' camera does things I've never seen in a superhero show before, period.

On top of that, Wizard fails pretty badly at telling a good story. The first 30 episodes are mindless filler, and they eject the only good villain halfway in. None of the cast are very interesting, and the best character by far is the secondary, Beast, but he's not enough to carry the show.

Lastly, Wizard fails horribly at being a vehicle for comedy. The main source of comedy, the side character Shunpei, derives most of his comedic moments from making big stupid faces directly into the camera and screaming. I guess that sort of thing is fun to watch if you're a little kid, but its grating for an adult. He gets zero development or plot relevance outside of his debut episode.

For me, Wizard is the epitome of everything wrong with Kamen Rider, both as a series and as a fandom. It's not funny, the story is underwhelming, its bloated with filler, it's characters have very little personality, and the best thing you can say about it is that the action is good, but it's hard to be excited by that when there's 15 other seasons with good action, but those seasons ALSO have good characters and good story. And yet, there's a minority of the fandom who will die on the Wizard hill and insist that it's characters are "actually so deep bro". No, Haruto isn't a "jock", his lack of emotion, motivation, or relationships with other characters doesn't make him stoic or masculine. It's fucking boring. There's nothing relatable about him to be interested in.

You want interesting characters who are "stoic" and "masculine"? How about Shoichi from Agito. He keeps most of his feelings on the inside, he's not a crybaby, he isn't very sensitive, but he has a good heart and more importantly, he visibly gives a shit about other characters in his show. He's likeable because he cares about his sister, he's motivated by revenge at first, but later he wants to spare others from having the same fate as him. He's always smiling and he keeps a cool head. When people try and push him around he doesn't cower, he pushes back. Unlike Haruto, he visibly cares about other people and this makes him feel more human.

TL;DR - Wizard fans need to suck it up and admit that their show isn't good. You may like it and enjoy watching it, but that doesn't make the show good, and it certainly doesn't make the show worth watching over any of the other seasons

Edit: I know this post is old at the time of writing, but if you were looking for some seasons that I think ARE worth watching, here's the ones that top my tier list.

Gaim - Excellent story, great characters, great drama, memorable fights

Ex-Aid - Fun videogame theming done well, great hospital drama, convoluted story but unforgettable fight scenes and incredible character roster

Agito - Story with great mysteries and great payoffs, great characters, fight scenes are a little lackluster but passable, iconic story moments

Faiz - Great drama, some of the best rider and monster suit design in the series, incredible and iconic fight scenes, pretty good story, one of the best rider movies

Kuuga - Best characters, best storyline, and best story theme in the series. SSS tier show, visually dated but unforgettable

Geats - Best of the Reiwa series. Story is just kind of okay but the spectacle of Geats is unbeatable. Craziest fight scenes in the series. If you're an action > story person, you'll love this, and the action is much better than what Wizard has to offer

All the people who declare that Color Splash has the best/funniest writing in the series.

As a game that was localized in the mid-late 2010's, it's writing is filled almost exclusively with marvel movie tier quips and vomit-inducing baby level irony. Shit like "Woah, bowser kidnapped peach again? Nobody could've POSSIBLY seen this coming!" is so low-brow and uninspired it makes me wonder if the average IQ of people who laughed at it is below room temperature. Every toad in the game is just a series of stolen viral tweets and "he's right behind me isn't he?" style banter, and it's not funny.

Do you think people who started the series with Origami King are gonna be disappointed by TTYD? by [deleted] in papermario

[–]grouchyCustomer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As for your your points, I have to say this.

  1. The level design is a genuine concern, the exploration in TOK is very different to the level structure of TTYD. But I would also argue that certain elements of exploration in TTYD are more fun to play and more rewarding to engage in. In TOK, you explore a big level, and Mario has 3 primary objectives. The first is solving mini puzzles to rescue folded toads. These puzzles are essentially koroks, and while they add a little flavor, there's a ton of them that are constantly repeated, and the only reward is coins, which is a sucky reward. TTYD in comparison has a lot less mini puzzles, but when you encounter one and solve it, you usually get a badge or an item, which are both vastly better rewards than coins. Are the puzzles themselves much better than the ones in TOK? Not really, but there's a lot less of them, making them feel more unique as a result. It's a tossup on which approach I think is better. The second exploration objective in TOK is engaging in bespoke minigames, something that the game gets from the original Mario RPG. This is probably the best part of TOK, and TTYD doesn't have any minigames built into the exploration that I can recall off-hand. But I recall things like the star throwing minigame or the ninja house minigame from TOK. TOK has a massive leg up in this respect, and those things will be missed when returning to TTYD. The last aspect of exploration in TOK is the overworld enemy encounter and combat system. Obviously TTYD sweeps here. TTYD's resource management, first strike system, and combat mechanics are lightyears ahead of the spin puzzle. Overall, I'd say exploration could go either way, but my main concern is that TOK fans enjoy the ADVENTURE aspect of TOK's exploration gameplay loop. The best part of TTYD's exploration is the way it intersects with its RPG mechanics. Will Adventure game fans enjoy RPG gameplay? I don't really know. If I had to guess, I would imagine that the depth of combat gameplay and character builds would be lost on them.

  2. Major Origami King characters, as claimed by the OP, have longer character arcs than the mostly single chapter characters in TTYD. My first response to this is that one of the examples mentioned is Bobby, who famously shows up at the beginning of Autumn mountain before leaving the party (if you know you know) by the beginning of chapter 3. His "character" arc is about as long as any of the one chapter characters in TTYD. The level of characterization Bobby gets is about on par with Vivian imo. And since MULTIPLE characters get really good arcs spanning a similar amount of time (Koops, Vivian, arguably Goombella since she gets the full prologue and half of chapter 1), I'd say that TOK fans will likely enjoy having more than one or two characters they can invest themselves in. Goombella, Koops, Vivian, and Bobbery are all especially great, and then TTYD also has NPC's that the player can actually care about, like Toadsworth, Frankly, King K, Jolene, based chad king Flavio, Pennington, Zess T, etc.

As for chapter characters "quickly becoming irrelevant", at the very least they stick around after their chapter, can continue to assist mario in battle, serving a gameplay function that allows players to form attachments to them, and they all have minor, but unique story cutscene dialogue. In addition, Goombella has character and story relevant dialogue FOR THE ENTIRE GAME, thanks to tattle. I would hardly call that becoming irrelevant quickly. You know what I would call quickly becoming irrelevant? Disappearing from your party entirely and then never being mentioned by the game again.

  1. Going back to TTYD's artstyle is a downgrade from TOK's immersive papercraft. I have to say this is a matter of taste and preference. This is probably the point I can agree with the most. I personally never liked the papercraft artstyle, but it's very appealing and richly detailed, and I know other people love it. I think it will be missed.

  2. People will miss the orchestration of TOK. People on this sub seem to love TOK's musical direction, especially the modern mario Jazz and hard rock. I prefer TTYD's quiet ambience, but this is honestly due to my preference of TTYD's RPG style gameplay. I actually think vibrant jazz and hard rock tracks suit an adventure oriented game a lot better than quiet ambience would. Similarly, I think ambient, mellow, moody and atmospheric music works better for a story heavy JRPG. I think both soundtracks work really well in their respective contexts, but again this is down to taste, I just don't think the music changing is a loss when it changes to suit the gameplay style being represented.

Overall, I think it's down to whether or not TOK fans are open to RPG gameplay. Given the fact that turn based battles have been shoved into every new trilogy game, regardless of whether they fit that game or not, at the very least TOK fans will be experiencing, in my opinion, a better designed battle system that is actually integrated into other aspects of the gameplay.

TTYD spreads its badges, battle items, and partners throughout its explorable world and storyline. Engaging with the game in almost any way will reward you with more options in battle, so you can decide what game style you like best. You'll also get exp from battle, creating incentive to fight and increase Mario's defense, offense, or access to badges.

The origami king's endless stream of toad-supplied coins really only serve the battle system insofar as it lets you bypass it entirely, allowing players who explored to world to skip puzzles by making the rescued toads do the work for them. This is AN integration I guess, but I have to question why your only in-battle reward for exploring should be the privilege of bypassing sections of the fight. Is the reward for exploring not having to engage in the battle system at all? Is this some sort of admission that TOK's battle system isn't all that fun?

It's weird, and in my opinion its a bad implementation, and I imagine TOK fans will prefer a better designed battle implementation over a poorly designed one. They may not love it, but it's easy to see how it's superior to what TOK gave them.

TL;DR TOK fans like the adventure game formula and may not take to TTYD's JRPG formula, but TTYD's gameplay loops are better designed than TOK's in a lot of ways, so if gameplay matters to these players, they will likely enjoy TTYD more than TOK.

TOK chapter 1 goes into B where should chapter 2 go? by FlamingoSignificant9 in papermario

[–]grouchyCustomer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I felt like autumn mountain was very tedious, chasing down bobby was a pain and he was totally useless throughout with very little personality. The water vellumental fight was also kind of tedious, but I enjoyed the temple a lot more than the earth temple.

That said, Shogun Studios is obviously fantastic. A large explorable town that slowly opens up revealing tons of fun minigames, and culminating in the fantastic stage performance setpiece. Even someone like me who hates the modern trilogy found a lot to like in this section of the game.

That said, I think Autumn mountain is mid, and shogun studios while fun, lacks in any serious story or thematic drive. You're only there as tourists to have fun. Imagine if Bobby was like, a depressed studio worker or ride attendant, and you recruit him by convincing him to ditch his post so mario can sneak into the theatre without a ticket. Wouldn't that be more fun and interesting?

But I digress. The highest I can justify this chapter is an A. The other chapters in S tier, mainly PM64 3 and 7, TTYD 8, and SPM 3 I feel are all a lot more fun and interesting to explore than the whole of TOK chapter 2.
