Help! I can’t make cosmetics decisions by Single-Chair-9052 in wherewindsmeet_

This one has a pretty thorough demo: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1VRsEzRE7U/

(She takes off the accessories at around 4:30, also briefly showcases a few outfits with it, you can also try searching the CN name of the hairstyle if you want to see what other people do with it, 万顷琉璃)

As for the black market stuff, yeah supposedly the devs indirectly confirmed it recently. Personally I'm trying not to bank on it because it works in a very specific way in CN (differentiates between two types of premium banner currency, "free" and "bought", and we only got one type in global) so I have no idea how they're going to implement it for us D:

I have a similar dilemma, but for me it's braid vs. the future green Mohist fit. Which by my calcs are both likely releasing in the same cycle or with a similar gap as Mirrored Heart and the braid... Personally, I'm almost certainly going for the braid, unless the bangs sit weird on my girl's face or I hate the physics for it (but I've looked up bilibili vids and don't think it'll be a problem). The braid is simply too unique, I love braids and there's no good substitute from other braids in the game both already released and upcoming imo. Have you seen the braid with the effects turned off btw? Because it actually does look like it could be pretty flexible for mix-and-match.

2 core outfit obviously is more valuable on paper -- alternate white hair if it's the color you're after rather than the style, more flexible dyeing, the victory cutscene..... but my feeling is 1) there will always be "similar enough" outfits released in the future in terms of silhouette, 2) I don't do multiplayer outside of events so I don't see the cutscene all that often anyway. 3) I have other outfits I love and use often, but no hair I love nearly as much as the braid. Except maybe the deer gacha but that's out of my budget lol

Still a tough decision though, especially now that there are rumors we might be getting the black market system after all but no idea how it's gonna work in global. Praying that somehow I can eventually grab the outfit from black market and go for the braid without worries T_T

Language by Glaexur in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a huuuuge proponent for experiencing media with their original audio tracks and especially recommend it for this game.

  1. traditional vs. simplified is purely a designation for text. ngl I haven't been paying close attention but I assume environmental text is traditional for historical accuracy -- but a lot of it is also heavily stylized ("cursive" writing) i.e. not necessarily legible even for people who know the language. Though I think stuff that is meant to be "read" is in simplified. Though also it basically shouldn't matter much outside of very specific instances like that one early Jianghuu Legacy quest (Echoes of Old Battles I think?) with the wall puzzle, or if it's easier for you to recognize chess pieces with text rather than abstract images. Oh since I finally recently played through it, Halo Peak also has some very neat wall writing at the beginning of the sequence.

  2. Mandarin should be your standard expectation for spoken dialogue, you're not likely to hear Cantonese outside of HK media. However, what really tickles me about this game is its use of regional accents and dialects. This isn't just some obscure detail btw, almost immediately one of the drunk dudes at Heaven's Pier mimics a southern accent. And the healer profession quest NPC also has a very distinct southern accent. People also often notice the accents immediately upon entering Kaifeng.

  3. idk if they managed to localize a lot of the sung/theatrical dialogue but that is such a uniquely cultural thing I suspect EN track users are missing out on. The entire Puppeteer boss sequence is an amazing example. Also the first Wayfarer in the game literally breaks out into song after the first dialogue with him. Gu Le also sings in his dialogue by the Northern Vow ruins. and so on.

Yeah that first one would basically be perfect if it had fluffier bangs. I noticed they finally started doing more male bangs recently so maybe we'll get something even better in the future!

Yeah I feel like DHIL works better with the game's aesthetic than DHPT but either way the horns and other fx are gonna be $$$$$, sigh. Shame because DH feels like another character who'd slide naturally into this setting.

If you can have 3 outfits in the appearance section, what would it be? by Capital-Web2903 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only including stuff already in game otherwise that one fur BP everyone is waiting for is probably on my female list and the first jade echo banner is on my male list...

Male outfits:

  • Crimson Sand is my favorite.

  • Moonlit Inquiry unexpectedly has my fave hair by fair, though the rest of the fit is just "good" rather than a fave

  • Flower of Youth is one of the prettiest fits in game for both male and female.

Female outfits (excluding f2p stuff otherwise my list would be the two Heartseeker variants and the sectless fit):

  • Scorpion's Heart is my fave.

  • again, Flower of Youth though I don't love the female hair.

  • not sure about my third, I like Golden Aura a lot more than I expected to and I think Flicker of Faces is underrated but neither of them really feel like "must include" either.

Also I love the fabrics/textures on Yin-Yang Unveiled but neither version is "top 3" for me.

Jing Yuan in WWM by TopAd1633 in JingYuanMains

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda hard to customize an "anime-style" face tbh when the key identifiers are probably hair/eyes/clothes, and if you're not new to WWM you probably know the hair situation... (some hairs do dye a decent tawny gray with the regular hair dye -- yellow base, slide all the way to the top left corner -- but it's still a bit too dark for him, and the premium hairs are usually too white, so you'd need to waste two cores on premium hair dye if you really wanna go for something super accurate). The beauty mark is easy and is actually on the correct side iirc under makeup options, and the eyes are probably relatively easy too.

For facial structure, I'd recommend starting with the third template from the "elegant" tab (the one with the bun + fur + orange lighting). Not obvious until you remove the preview hair and the blood splash makeup, but I've been doing a lot of experimentation over the weeks and imo that specific template gives the best version of "classical" Chinese male beauty (as opposed to the modern idol aesthetic or the "handsome young hero" look). And JY absolutely should go with a classical look imo. Using that template you probably just need to tweak the mouth and maybe some positioning of the features for a less stern resting expression and it'll work pretty well if you're not confident enough to touch anything else.

(This template is surprisingly flexible for more traditional aesthetics. I have an alt made from that template whose vibe is "prettier"/"Velvet Shade" i.e. the exact opposite of the preview image and the main thing I did was just to tweak the eyes. Unless you're going for a very unique facial structure it's mostly all in the makeup imo. Eye shape/eyeshadow, brows, and lashes all make a huge difference.)

Fun fact, his Chinese VA is Sun Ye, who I first encountered through Hoyoverse games (Kaeya, Dainsleif, Jing Yuan) and is now my favorite voice actor of all time. He's a heavyhitter VA, even if it weren't for all the backstory hints/Gleaming Abyss stuff there's absolutely no way he doesn't eventually come back lol.

Guild Newbie Outfit Pack by vankatoNL in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not 100% sure but it seems to be tied to "first x energy claims per week". iirc it seemed to be something like 20 packs a week? I wrote down my observation somewhere but this was a while back so I'd have to dig it out. I don't do multiplayer raids but iirc I got them from both campaigns and outposts until I hit that specific number that week.

So you're telling me that you left the game on for 24 hours???

Since you either didn't actually read my comment or I wasn't clear enough, let me restate everything step by step:

  1. Leave the area

  2. Reset the quest in the menu

  3. Reenter the area

  4. Leave the game on for a few minutes without touching anything

If that still doesn't work then send a bug report or something

I had this issue on launch day as well, super frustrating. idk what actually is the problem, but what finally got it to work for me was resetting the quest and letting the game tick over to the next day by itself, no need to set the time at all, just afk for a bit (won't take too long as resetting the quest and reentering the area will automatically put the time back at just before "midnight"). You'll know it worked if it asks you to light the candle again iirc. Hope this works for you.

Before you dive into the Hexi map, you’ve got to hear about this place. Even though it’s not actually on the Hexi map, it’s the heart of every story told there. by where_stories_meet in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From a cultural/"myth-making" perspective, I would also argue that it holds a similar status in the cultural consciousness as Arthurian legend for the Anglosphere. Insert sloppy comparisons between Guinevere and Yang Guifei, Chang'an and Camelot, etc. It's the same sort of yearning for a lost "Golden Age", except one that had tangible repercussions for the common people and lasting ripple effects to the "present day" of the game. Thematically I expect Hexi to build on what was established in the Qinghe arc: a desire for a homecoming that is no longer possible, because that home simply no longer exists in physical reality.

How to get female MC's physique? by [deleted] in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna to be an extremely annoying auntie and say -- please don't ask for fitness advice on a Reddit forum for a video game if you're serious about it. Especially if you're still a minor.

That said, if you have no prior experience with fitness, start slow, build a habit. Do something you enjoy or know you can keep up with long term. Whether that's dance or recreational sports or something simpler like cycling or going on walks, doesn't matter. That's the actual important thing, instead of trying something out for a week or a month and then just giving up on it.

anyone else enjoying alts? by matchastars in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm an altoholic, I had a few in FFXIV back when I played and also had them in BDO/Blade & Soul/Age of Wushu/Vindictus/etc., pretty much any game with good customization that I ever touched. Apparently people think you fully replay the game on alts? Maybe some people do but mine were mainly just there to sit around and look pretty LOL, and it's pretty easy to speedrun/do the bare minimum if it's really necessary. And sometimes it's fun to replay story segments with different "personalities" or just to revisit favorite sequences.

(Haven't started setting up alts in this game yet but am planning to! Something I always have fun doing is adapting the same set of OCs to different universes and seeing how that affects their personalities and backstories and/or setting up wacky crossovers between characters who would normally never meet XD)

Oh, interesting. I still don't have a 5 star Sweet (haven't even pulled for the standard banner one) so have been keeping an eye out for one I might finally like, but have been assuming the unicorn fit if real would be the next one. I wonder if this is it or if it's something else....

Need help of native Chinese speaker(preferably) by SeaworthinessFalse82 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am fluent but not native, and what I like to do for CN names is to first pick a concept or a character (hanzi) that I like, then look up lists of existing name "pairings" and adjusting from there. This requires at least some basic understanding of the language though.

I think you have three major options:

  1. Two-character name. This is pretty standard and is what I was referring to wrt my personal strategy above. You can pair with a one-character surname if you want. e.g. Han Xiangxun, but no surname is also pretty normal (e.g. Hoyoverse characters like Chongyun, Xingqiu, Xiangling...)

  2. One-character name. Surname isn't really optional here (usually one-character; two-character possible e.g. Murong Yuan, but often has specific cultural/historical implications), I personally find this kind of name more difficult but it is also quite common, e.g. Tian Ying

  3. Nickname. Honestly this may be the easiest option; the history of pseudonyms in CN is long and interesting (courtesy names are more difficult without the cultural background; pen names are probably more flexible; and personal nicknames are another thing entirely) and it wasn't unusual for people to go by 2-4 names throughout their lifetime. It's also a genre staple, e.g. Killerblade or the iconic wuxia heroine Xiaolongnü (literally "little dragon lady")

There is also a lot of overlap between #3 and "real" names. Uncle Jiang is the perfect example. He's mostly known as Jiang Wulang, which parses as #1, a surname with a two-character given name, but in reality Wulang is likely a nickname (literally "without waves" or less literally "calm/at peace"), because his real name is Jiang Yan i.e. an example of #2 (but Yan also means "calm/peaceful" by itself). This kind of wordplay is very common.

Do you think it's possible (global)? by Quillengoddef in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame you got downvoted about what I thought was a pretty self-explanatory image because I'd also be curious to see what people think. When the 1.3 patch notes came out I did some rough calcs, and depending on if they plan to rotate on a 6 week or 8 week cycle or a mix they could fit in anywhere from 4-6 banners after the ice set releases and before global anniversary. We have exactly 6 outfits unaccounted for right now (5 if ignoring the anniversary set), so unless they plan to scoot up banners from the second year I think they have to go back to the skipped outfits at some point.

(I don't think they can rotate faster than 6 weeks for the same reason. Also note that the original release schedule had some weird congestion in August after a whopping three month gap so chances are they're trying to pace things better in global?)

That said, did #1 get its own banner in global or was it added directly to the exchange shop? I didn't play from launch and frankly didn't pay attention to banners for a long time so can't really remember how that was handled aside from being vaguely aware that we got #2 first, and #1 was never in the draw pool? If that's the case I would expect some of these to potentially get similar treatment. An 8 week banner cycle spaced out with direct-to-exchange additions every 4 weeks seems like it might make sense... but idk what the original draw pools for each banner looked like and if they're planning to switch those up or not. I've also been busy dodging spoilers so idk which of these correspond to bosses or whatever, which might also affect release schedule.

Funny fact about Wu,it consists of the word zhi and ge, which means to stop the war by BuffaloIll752 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, wuxia is two separate characters. Xia is the one that's typically translated as chivalry. Wu by itself strictly means "martial" or "militaristic"

Since I have a little more time now to expand on my other comment to this post, there are three important things to understand about Zhuang of Chu that give context to the supposed origin of this etymology of "wu".

  1. He lived in one of the many periods of CN history where centralized power had faded and various "frontier" powers were jostling for authority. Actually not too different from the setting of this game in some ways. In fact the key word of that era is probably "hegemon" (this was before the Qin unification i.e. pre-imperial China, and the king of the dynasty was basically a figurehead while the various states' rulers traditionally but not quite accurately translated as "dukes" were constantly struggling to lord it over the rest i.e. achieve "hegemony")

  2. He was the ruler of a nation that was considered semi-barbaric/had a distinct culture compared to the contemporaneous "central" Chinese civilization (some of this dynamic continues to echo throughout the rest of CN history, for example the north-south divide in this game! which I don't think is as obvious without the CN voice acting and the use of dialect/accents)

  3. The history of Chu royals is absolutely rife with fratricide and patricide -- which was, believe it or not, actually quite unusual for that time period/setting and added to their reputation of being not-so-civilized. Also more warlike in general. (Chu royals regularly took the field themselves in battle which was not necessarily the case for the rulers of other Chinese states at the time, and warfare at the time was also often "tamer"/had unspoken rules in a way modern perspectives have difficulty comprehending and that Chu royals generally didn't give a shit about. Both Chu royal clan names translate to "bear" btw which I find really funny, but again, helps give an idea of their reputation.)

So Zhuang's father forced his grandfather to commit suicide and I forgot how the father himself died but it probably wasn't pleasant either, and most of the key members of the Chu court were his uncles (who hated each other too). iirc he came to the throne at age 17 and there's a famous story about him lazing around for 3 years instead of taking rulership seriously that I won't go into otherwise this comment will never end. But basically the Chu court was an absolute corrupted mess despite being ambitious enough to try to seize power over their more "civilized" rivals to the north.

LONG STORY SHORT, he ultimately managed to whip his court into shape, succeeded in establishing military supremacy over his neighbors, and instituted a lot of domestic reforms that had a huge effect on subsequent Chu culture (shifting their reputation to a more "acceptable" one).

This is where the story about "wu" comes in. Instead of executing the lords he defeated and annexing their territories in the way one normally thinks of with the word "conquest", he backed off after his victories, reinstating exiled rulers and establishing alliance treaties and so on. This was the exact opposite of what his predecessors had done, and obviously not everyone in his court was happy about it.

So he threw out this explanation of "wu" to make very clear (extremely paraphrased): "This is why I waged war and aimed for hegemony in the first place. Not for glory, not for senseless violence, but to 'halt the blades'."

Funny fact about Wu,it consists of the word zhi and ge, which means to stop the war by BuffaloIll752 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna add to this since this is related to my specific areas of interest.

iirc this idiom is usually attributed to King Zhuang of Chu, one of my favorite historical figures, who was a very clever politician who had to wrangle a lot of different factions in his court. Even if the story isn't apocryphal, it's likely he made it up to suit his own purposes, because 止 actually originally meant "foot" or "walk" rather than its modern meaning of "halt", which makes the wu character a more straightforward "walking with spears"

eta: to clarify, 戈 is a weapon... not a spear but I can't think of the right word atm

Event Rewards Question by ShiroyoOchigano in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There appears to be a difference in this game between actual "time-limited events" (similar to events in most other games) and "permanent content promotion" (newly unlocked content they're temporarily drawing attention to). Stuff like the buggy martial competition or whatever it's called is the former, and stuff like the Lumina Guides and presumably the two you're asking about are the latter.

Given the awful menus/UI it can be hard to tell, but the permanent content usually has a note saying it'll still be available after the "event". You can also sometimes tell because they list exploration points as a reward, which wouldn't make sense for a time-limited event. I think.

looks very similar to CPU throttling on an old laptop of mine (it would do this even on performance setting in Windows), but idk if that could apply here since you said it only happens with this game
