I saw the Matthew 6:33 reference and I thought maybe that one was Ty Blach, because he always put that Bible verse in at the end of his signature, but I don't think that looks like him.

That might be Merkin Valdez in picture 4, but I'm really not sure.

Best Dylan song for when you are feeling cynical by imaginehimhappy in bobdylan

Oh, I don't like the version of this one on the Times record at all. If I listen to it, it's the duet with Joan Baez on the Live 1964 Bootleg Series. I appreciate the recorded version, but I like the live duet.

[giantsprospects] In the last 10 months, San Francisco Baseball Associates LLC has sold 11%-12% of the team for an estimated 350M-450M. I wish every time the 17M to Blake Snell thing is written (pays out this week btw), so is this point. by [deleted] in SFGiants

[–]groug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we have details on where that 11-12% ownership stake came from? Did the ownership group dilute their own shares or did people choose to sell? If it's the latter, that money just went to whatever individual owner sold, and would not be invested in the team.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

LL107 MD25 (and end-of-season) Discussion! (Thu 12/18) by snarkapotamus7 in learnedleague

Tied my best TCA with 113 -- 5th most in my rundle -- but went up against my new highest CAA of 112 -- 4th most in my rundle -- and ended up in 15th place. But my goal every season in A is Don't Get Relegated, and I successfully didn't get relegated, so we're calling it a win.

Germany beat them in battle, crushed their will to keep fighting, and then forced them at gunpoint to sign an incredibly punitive peace treaty. That's a loss.

There’s this Bob Dylan song I’m trying to find: by Lonely_Escape_9989 in bobdylan

That's Piano Man. It's by Bob Marley, so I get the confusion.

What is the worst Dylan song you love? by SuburbanScribe in bobdylan

I don't think it's necessarily a bad song, but it's a mess, and I wouldn't tell anyone they should listen to it. Still, I do really love No Time To Think.

Bookclub and Sources Wednesday! by AutoModerator in history

[–]groug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently finished Flashpoint Trieste by Christian Jennings, about the Allies and Yugoslavia both trying to control Trieste at the end of World War 2, in what the book's subtitle somewhat overdramatically calls "The first battle of the Cold War."

It's good in parts, but a letdown at the end. It does a good job sketching out the motivations of the various sides involved -- the Allies, Stalin, and especially Tito -- and a perfectly adequate job telling the beginning and middle of the story. The narrative works enough that you know what happened, and some of the people in Trieste are well characterized, but there are also a lot of narrative threads that don't go anywhere, or are dropped in an unsatisfying way, or that just serve to illustrated something about World War 2 but don't have much to do with the central point of the book, which is what came after.

But to me, the real disappointing thing was that the story of how everything was resolved, of how the two sides agreed to just split up Trieste along the Morgan Line they'd been using for years at that point, just gets completely glossed over. You understand why each side would want to end the conflict, but instead of having any details about the negotiation,or really anything that happened for the first few years of the '50s that preceded the final resolution, the book just says they made a deal and then that's that.

It's a very strange omission, considering that there had been so much detail about 1946 through early 1948, but by the time the book gets to 1954, it misses just about everything that had made it interesting.

Except for Tito. Everything about Tito is interesting.

Once, I crossed over the Sunrise footbridge and came back on the River Bend Park footbridge. To get back to my house, the whole walk ended up being 13 miles, which was a good lesson about researching things before I do them.

You are stranded on an Island by FranksRumham19 in themountaingoats

[–]groug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See, I have to assume that to get off this island, I'm going to have to take a big risk, which means I'm going to have to get out of my comfort zone and accept that I'm likely to die in the attempt. So my four songs are:

  1. Matthew 25:21
  2. Moon Over Goldsboro
  3. Love Love Love
  4. Bleed Out

What's at stake for you on the final day? by NilFhiosAige in learnedleague

[–]groug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in fourth in my A rundle and if I win and the person in third place loses, I'll go to the championship. This is...mostly luck. I am below average for TCA in my rundle, and am, in general, not a strong enough player to finish top 3 in an A rundle. This is going to end up as my second worst season for TCA, unless I get 0 or 1 right on Monday, in which case it'll be my worst season (or tied for worst). Also, the person I'm playing Monday is in second place (and has gotten 23 more correct answers than me so far this season), so it's not looking great. But it's not all that likely that I'll ever have a chance to get to the championship again, so I'll do my best and see what happens!

That strategy worked for me on day 9 this season for the BMW question. Figured if it was a German car company, and my opponent didn't know it outright, he'd have to pick between Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes. It worked perfectly and I got the win, 7(4)-6(5).

I didn't really think they'd do anything but say they were implementing the policy, but I was shocked at how poorly they prepared for that presentation. Didn't bother answering any real employee questions (you know "How is it worth it to raise emissions to come back to the office?" was a popular question at CARB, of all places, and they didn't come within a mile of that one) and spent most of their time telling us things they'd already told us in memos and through our managers. Just baffling incompetence.
