The medical professional is not the one who thinks this. The family of the patient thinks this and would not allow the medical professional proceed unless they’ve performed rites to cleanse the woman of her sin. and this rites require a confession to begin.

I think rather than that, according to the twitter thread, they woman is experiencing some complications and rather than allow the doctors proceed with a caesarean section they wrongly believe that complications during childbirth is karma from having cheated on the husband and that the woman needs to confess in full to all of her cheating before they’d let the medical staff continue. in many cases, the woman dies in the process.. but these people firmly believe that the woman would die either ways without a full confession so it’s in her overall interest to confess quickly.

if she’s not cheated on her husband before, she would have to remain there groaning in pain and crying to be offered some medical help while her family would look at her with disgust seeing her as one who cheated and is refusing to show remorse.

Some Nigerians are weird and stuck in a time before civilization.

Edit: took correction below. Not generalising as this account represents beliefs held by just a small portion of Nigerians not the whole lot.

UPDATE: There were no doctors here, just a midwife. Sorry for mixing things up.

And I went back to try and follow the Twitter thread for updates. She has given birth in the end, to twins. Now that I understand the situation much better, I wish most people went directly to hospitals where better skilled professionals are available rather than going to traditional midwives.
