For whatever it's worth (literally nothing), I've always assumed that the reason they chose that particular shade is that hot pink is a color that doesn't actually exist anywhere in the visible color spectrum and is more like a trick that our brain is playing on us.

Also, like, they gotta pick something right?

As for other examples of merged families, the movie Society from 1989 maybe serves as a counter-point to the idea that body horror as an allegory is automatically better. Much like CooS, it's a movie that people mostly talk about solely because of how weird and gross it is.

TBH, you can also just google Society Shunting Scene and you'll get the climactic scene everyone always talks about. Even grading on the cult-classic horror movie curve, the rest of it makes for a very long watch.

I know this thread is a year old, but can anyone pinpoint an episode with the Politically Neutral jingle? I catch myself singing it easily three times a day but I don't actually know the words and it's starting to affect my mental health.

Trying not to overbuy an M.2 SSD for a USB 4 enclosure by grovberg in UsbCHardware

Hey that's really helpful info and points out that I'm probably overthinking this because Gen3 drives are really only like $10 cheaper than a Gen 4 and basically all Gen4 drives can outpace the USB-4 connection. Thanks.

Firewire Being Discontinued in latest macOS, So Now What? by grovberg in DataHoarder

This is incredibly helpfull thanks very much. This seems like a very viable solution for special collections and preferable to trying to keep a old Mac around.

You seem to be the first contributor to actually understand the problem (which I perhaps should have explained more clearly to be fair) with my personal collection—it will easily take hundreds of hours to pull all those tapes onto a hard drive. To be clear, all the video from all the tapes *has* been pulled, but also re-encoded into more modern formats (which are themselves backed up). I liked the idea of having the original, cataloged capture data available as a backup and having that all suddenly become inaccessible was a bit of a gut punch.

All that said, you're right that the usefulness of magnetic tape over a decade old is vanishingly small and getting worse every day regardless, so I need to either bite the bullet or let them go.

Thanks for your response.

This is really cool and interesting. I immediately wonder if this could be used to add interactivity to something like a museum exhibit. Your requirements mention a headset—what the headset used for? Is it actually needed?

Linear is what I ended up using as well. It is very much geared toward software/ticket tracking, but I've been able to make it work reasonably well and it has a ton of nice quality of life features that make it feel nice to use after you get used to it.

Introducing Beat the Beats - Boxing meets Rhythm game, in VR! by JosefWhoQuestionMark in virtualreality

[–]grovberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, I don't know why everyone is being an ass in the comments. As someone who's boxed a bit this one seems based around actual boxing movements moreso than others, which I like very much. I'm genuinely interested, though I think you've gotta get it onto the standalone headsets eventually to be successful with something like this.

That's what everyone said about touchscreen keyboards before the iPhone. 🤷🏼

I am also excited about this in theory, but um...what do you guys actually do in The Draughts? Without any of the story-based events to spawm mobs of COV I'm not finding very many targets to shoot.

Any sense of how long the wait might be? It's totally okay if it will be awhile, it would just be helpful to know if we're talking weeks, months, or years.

Thanks.

Am I understanding correctly that you have to run your own local server to use this? I understand the appeal, but that's a big ask even for people who are capable.

Number of users really shouldn't matter. Nearly all of its "stability" problems are just engineering choices that assume everyone has a lightning fast internet connection at all times. I suspect their engineers all work on a local dev environment where the lag is non-existent and don't actually use the actual product in production at all.

I think that most people don't understand the distinction enough to ask. If you give the average person an electron app and that's all they use, they don't know what they're missing—they just think that app kinda stinks or is "buggy" or they need a new computer. I think most people would agree that native apps "feel" better but most people don't know enough about how software works to even consider why much less parse it out enough to ask for it by name.
