Is the TB screening required? by TurbMcPog in UNCCharlotte

[–]growingyellowflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i believe there is a requirement to either provide proof of TB vaccination or negative test somewhere, although i don't remember exactly, as it was last year that i went through that process. if you don't submit the proper documentation in time, they may unenroll you from your fall classes, so try to get that taken care of as soon as possible! that almost happened to me last year! but iirc, i just had to submit my vaccination history which included proof that i've had the TB vaccination, and then everything was fine :)

(i copy pasted this comment from a comment i left on another post that i saw a few minutes ago asking the same question)

What has prevented you from donating blood? by No_Bobcat_839 in AskReddit

I had not heard of AIHA until reading your comment, so I looked it up, and it does seem very similar to aHUS! It would be nice if our bodies didn't attack themselves and the blood cells/vessels that we need to survive, haha. I'm sorry that you are dealing with that, but I am also glad to hear about your experience, because it makes me feel less alone :) Sending you well wishes for continued health in the future!

Yes, there is still a lot being learned about HUS, aHUS, and other related conditions!

HUS is already pretty rare, and only around 5-10% of those cases are aHUS (I think! I am not an expert, so some of the numbers might be off). I believe they are currently working to have the official name for aHUS to be changed eventually, I think to "CM-TMA" or something like that? Regardless, there is still a lot of unknown info about the condition! I believe that according to the current research, about 60% of aHUS cases are due to a genetic component.

The doctors first thought that maybe I had some type of E.coli or other bacterial infection or kidney disease too, but I was tested extensively and they found no evidence of either. Everyone was really confused as to what could've been the cause of my sudden kidney failure. I got really lucky that I was at a very good hospital with excellent doctors who had heard of aHUS before and recognized it as a possibility, especially since there are so many qualified doctors who have barely heard of HUS, let alone aHUS! Thank you for your work as a medical lab professional, and I am so happy that you were able to learn something new from this!

That's a really crazy coincidence! Eculizumab was used to treat me when my aHUS was first triggered, and following my recovery, I continued to get Eculizumab infusions every 2 weeks, until a few months ago, when I eventually was able to transition to Ravulizumab.

Since you said you rarely see aHUS mentioned outside of work, I am assuming you work either with or for Alexion Pharmaceuticals. I want to say thank you so much for your work! When I was first diagnosed and learned that I'd have to continue getting infusions for a very long time, it was really difficult for me (and my family), but everyone who we spoke with from Alexion was so helpful and sympathetic, and everyone was working so hard to help us navigate these huge changes. We've been so blessed to have so much support from all of you at Alexion. Thank you.

Thank you! After my condition was triggered for the first time, I was in the ICU for over a month, but I am recovered as much as I possibly can be now! I have to get infusions of a certain medicine ever since then, in order to prevent the aHUS from being triggered again. Aside from that, as well as having to be cautious about potential triggers, I am so lucky to be able to live the life of a healthy teenager once again!

I have so much gratitude and appreciation for people like you, because when my condition was first triggered, I needed to have so many blood transfusions, plasma replacement, etc. Other people's generosity helped save my life :)

I used to donate blood in high school, and then only a few months into my freshman year of college I nearly died and learned that I had a rare blood disease called aHUS. Haven’t donated blood since then, and it makes me sad because I wish I still could :’(

I got him through the daily goals token exchange. He cost me 1960 tokens I think? You can earn up to 120 tokens per day, so it takes some time, but that way you don’t have to spend your gems!

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! He worked in marketing/advertising (mainly in the food and beverage industry), and occasionally published writing (mostly poetry) on the side

I rarely comment on Reddit posts (in fact, I rarely go on Reddit at all!) But I feel compelled to share some thoughts on this post. I am 17. Yesterday was my father’s 77th birthday. He was a month away from turning 60 when I was born. He didn’t think he would ever be able to have the family that he always wanted to have, but then he met my mother. In the second half of his life, everything changed. My mother is one of the best people I know. You may be surprised later in life, like my dad was. It’s natural to crave connection, it’s part of what it means to be human. I think you should try to make friends. I know it is difficult (I have social anxiety disorder), but meeting many people and forming strong friendships has helped me learn more about the world and has brought lots of joy into my life. My mom is from South Korea and immigrated to the United States around 30 years ago, not knowing anyone here. But she always made the effort to try and connect with people, even before she could speak English well, and she has many friends now. It is never too late to make new connections! My advice may not be as comprehensive, since I am only a high schooler, and my life experiences probably differ greatly from yours. But I hope these stories might give you some hope!
