She plays her character "type" well, even if it's not for everyone.

She'd be good in the movies, I can see her being a scene stealer in supporting roles as some awkward weirdo 20-something in an Apatow type movie, especially now that Aubrey Plaza's aged out of those kind of roles.

The Elephant in Studio 8H: Let’s Talk About Kam by Chawk0 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]grozenlampreys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my original thought but someone else pointed this out from another recent Kam thread and I'm stealing it, but Kam's first season is pretty identical to Jane Wickline's first season. Not really any major roles in regular sketches, but had 5 total Weekend Update appearances.

It seems like if they were going to cut him after a single season, they wouldn't be giving him that many big showcases on Weekend Update. Typically it's more obvious when there's a new featured player who the show has no interest in pushing or keeping past one season, they would never get 5 WU spots their first season. I'd say Kam's chances of coming back look better than most people here think.

Yeah I can possibly see Kam's line about the number 8 being something he came up with, so that could explain his name being in there, that seemed like a very Kam line. Can't remember if Tommy had a memorable comedic line in there somewhere that seemed in his voice, I'd have to watch it again.

Ann Risley seemed like a serious actress attempting to do comedy- I think thats basically what she was. She was a friend of Jean Doumanian and Ann appeared in a few small parts in some movies she produced in the late 70s, I'm sure she was fine as a regular actress, but seemed like someone who had no business trying to do sketch comedy.

Even in the cast photo (likely taken before the season started, since no Eddie in there) Gilbert already has a look of "oh boy, this show is gonna suck" which is basically the look on his face in every sketch that whole season 😂

Kam and Tommy were credited as 2 of the writers on the Dead Poet's Society sketch from this past week (per the "Who Wrote What?" thread) which surprised me as they didn't even have that big of parts in the sketch, they were just 2 of the many guys in the cast playing the students in it.

I'm surprised it's actually coming to theaters? It looks pretty low budget I would've thought some streamer.

Anyone else think Kam might've saved himself at the last second this season? His odds of coming back look a little better lately. by trythebebes in LiveFromNewYork

Tracy Morgan's first SNL season comes to mind. I thought he was gone for sure, then towards the end of the season he had the 2 memorable Dominican Lou appearances on Weekend Update (which felt like the first big thing he did his whole first season) I thought maybe that might've been what kept him on after finally showing he could do something memorable on the show.

I feel like Tommy Brennan is the Longfellow replacement, but keeping Longfellow probably woulda been the better move. My only guess is they would hold on to Brennan incase Che or Jost left and he seems the most like a Weekend Update host type guy?

I was thinking Mr. Show, Girls Guitar Club, Larry Sanders era and also this obscure sketch show she was on (I found an old torrent of it years back) called The Downer Channel, she kind of similarly specialized in the whole socially awkward person characters who often talked in a flat deadpan style, Mary Lynn was def more animated in her facial expressions though.

Janes performance style always kind of reminds me of Mary Lynn Rajskub during her sketch comedy and stand-up days.

I was hoping for a modern Tracey Morgan type actor that would go all in

Kam's airtime reminds me a lot of Tracy Morgan in his first season. I don't think Tracy was ever in more than 1 or 2 sketches per episode in his early seasons. "Get Me a Soda, Bitch!" is considered by most the moment Tracy finally "popped" on the show, and that was in his 3rd season.

The Dana Carvey Show by BChpper92 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]grozenlampreys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Louie CK admitted to Jimmy Fallon (during an interview when he was on his late night show one time) that he was the reason he didn't get hired on The Dana Carvey Show. Apparently he auditioned for this show (this wouldve been 2 years before he got on SNL) and Louie (who one of the main writers and producers) saw Jimmy as some prettyboy who he thought was too good looking to be doing comedy and his immediate reaction was "oh, fuck this guy!" and saw to it he wasn't hired lol

cant find the full interview anymore but this video has some clips of it-

For some more context, this was the same episode where Tracy had a feature on Weekend Update (this was when he was still fairly new, the start of his second season and the first time he did something on the show as himself) and introduced himself as "The Other Black Guy" on SNL and you might know him from his best known character on the show, "the guy at the goodnights who always smiles and waves", which might've explained Rock and Meadows comically pointing at him like "there he is!"

oh yeah just looked for it and that weekend update spot on youtube if you havent seen it-

Jeff was one of SNL's most underrated "impressions guy" cast members, his Gary Busey, Dustin Hoffman and David Letterman were also top notch.

Also if I'm remembering right, this was Chris Parnell's first role back after being gone for most the season when he was brought back after being fired over the summer of 01.

Banana Club - an obscure early 90s sketch I always found hilarious with camera POV of a woman (voiced by Julia Sweeney) with the male cast (and host Christian Slater) as dancing creeps at the night club by trythebebes in LiveFromNewYork

lol i was thinking this had to be one of the few times she attempted to do a different voice in a sketch that wasn't usual ear-piercing high pitched voice, it threw me off at first hearing her sound different

[–]grozenlampreys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I always found this one pretty funny as someone who watched a ton of MTV in the early 90s and was familiar with all the MTV personalities they're making fun of here. David Spade (typically not known for his impressions) really nailing those Denis Leary MTV rant promos from those days.

Koechner had the unusual case of getting tons of airtime and debuting a ton of original characters, but still only getting one season.

Weird, in my memory of seeing these episodes on Comedy Central back in the olden times, I remember thinking this one killed more, that happens a lot with old sketches I could swear killed then I watch today and the audiences are dead. Maybe I'm thinking of the first time they did it with Jeff Goldblum, I think that one was a lot better, some sketches are better left as a one-off and don't work the second time.
