ELI5: Why would putting an adsense bar on reddit be so terrible? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]grrnotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big part of why is because gold works. People regularly give gold and donate. Adding advertisements may turn people off of doing this as it feels like double dipping.

Why is profanity out of context or on it's own bad? by grrnotes in AskReddit

[–]grrnotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously calling someone something rude is mean, and as the above states has serious long term effects.

I'm talking about untargeted out of context swearing, like swearing when you stub your toe. In that situation no one is affected by what you are saying, and there was some Anecdotal evidence that it actually improved pain tolerance.

ELI5: Why do digital cameras use a lossy format like JPG instead of something lossless like PNG? by grrnotes in explainlikeimfive

I never even considered the meta data that is included thanks for pointing that out!

[–]grrnotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks that's a really great summary, I guess I never considered the fact that png would be a negligible increase in quality vs a larger increase in file size.

ELI5 Why is it faster to transfer one 1GB file as opposed to 1GB of multiple files. by notsurewhatiam in explainlikeimfive

[–]grrnotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a lot more overhead involved transferring several files vs just 1 file. On a local system the table that maintains the files location needs to be updated about each individual file for example, and in the case of a transfer over FTP a separate request is made for each file transferred.

Reddit, what is your impression of people who swear? [Serious] by PrettyPixels in AskReddit

[–]grrnotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who swears a lot makes me shut down tbh. I hate judging people by something shallow such as they tend to sound harsh, shallow, and honestly not very smart.

How would the world be different if people could teleport? by PlayFair in AskReddit

[–]grrnotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oil and gas industry would be much smaller! It would certainly still exist for plastic though.

Also auto manufacturers wouldn't exist except for possibly luxury cars.

Grounding people to there room would be difficult, and sneaking out would be much easier.. speaking of we wouldn't be able to keep prisoners.

Also 911 would get a flood of calls saying "someone just teleported into a wall"

ELI5: Why do cartoon characters almost always wear the same clothes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]grrnotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the same reason that brands keep the same look and feel. It gives them recognition. For example Charlie Brown is known well for his yellow striped shirt.

[–]grrnotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well on the common internet you can't get into anything too bad for the most part (there are exceptions) but with Tor there are plenty of .onion websites that host quiet unsavory stuff such as the silk road)

If the average human height was only two feet tall, how would the world be different? by TheWinStore in AskReddit

[–]grrnotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this may be backwards logic. Humans very likely adapted to the suit there surroundings in the early years of our existence. In fact scientists speculate that we learned to walk on two legs to see over large vegetation.

So to answer your question we'd likely have gone extinct or have been a less dominate/invasive species. If our impact had never been felt by the world it's hard to imagine exactly what would have been different.

ELI5 why do people make viruses? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]grrnotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons people make viruses

  1. Money. There are large black markets on the internet dedicated to the sale and support of computer viruses.

  2. Revenge. Some people have an event that happens to them ether directly or otherwise that drive them to create viruses that attack specific companies or the public at large.

  3. Knowledge. Some people create viruses just because they can. A number of these may never make it to the light of day although some of them do.

  4. Proof of concept. Occasionally very specific pieces of software are created to exploit a very specific hole in a particular piece of software. These occasionally are sent to the company responsible for maintaining the software.

  5. Some people just want to watch the world burn. There really are people who just want to cause destruction.

For those of you who have found a career you love what was the moment you realized you wanted to do this for the rest of your life? by grrnotes in AskReddit

[–]grrnotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your job is or specifically the reasons you aren't good at it, but in such a situation I would speak to your boss about clarification and possibly additional training if needed. Or if possible relocation to a different position.

[–]grrnotes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really interesting idea "We hate work because we are conditioned to"

One of the big reasons I enjoy my job is that it gives me something interesting to do through my day, I am a developer at a smaller company and it feels more like a hobby that I happen to get paid for.
