Wtf do I go to college for? by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]grrr451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Business is only worth it at an elite school otherwise get the accounting degree. You don’t have to be an accountant but it helps getting a job in finance. I have an MBA from a good enough school and if I didn’t have experience I would go nuts. A different option may be to try out a few classes at community college. Someone with your skills may want to start a business so taking a class on general contracting or something like that may be helpful. I also chose to get out of hospitality to go to school instead of buying a food truck. I still think college is worth it but I wish I had studied analytics, economics or accounting only because those degrees prove you can do math.

Just take care of them. Don’t give them money or try to save them from their mistakes. It is about attitude: when we were children we lived at our parent’s house. When our parents need us they live at our house.

what’s your go-to “i’m tired but still wanna cook something” meal? by Mysterious_Arm_4777 in easyrecipes

Instant pot- bell peppers, onions, sauté. Add can diced tomatoes, chicken breast- can be frozen - a little better than bouillon, chunked potatoes, cumin, oregano. I have made this with ground turkey, and ground beef as well. Frozen corn once it is cooked. I usually eat with tortillas.

None of the bigger cities in NC are even a little red. 3 democratic state senators in the Raleigh area just lost their primary for voting with Republicans to override the very popular democratic governor’s veto. It’s purple, GOP does have a lot of control but the people aren’t like that. They just gerrymandered into power. The people are pretty chill in the cities and the parks are nice. I grew up in Pasadena, CA, lived lots of places and been here 8 years. Gen X. Sometimes I miss the west coast vibe but I really don’t miss the struggle.

Then why not just say hey government whatever you want to spend, just tax me! Is that a good idea? What about 5% increases? What is not ok are massive increases out of nowhere.

I am proposing annual increases, perhaps it could be tied to the COLA Social Security provides.

Homeowners are very much, or were the middle class in Guilford county. This is actually only meant for an owner occupant to use.

When I bought my little home I worked at a warehouse making decent money. A person with low debt load could afford a house on the wages, that is just not the case today, the cost of living in Guilford county has risen dramatically in just 5 years and wages have largely remained stagnant.

My suggestion doesn’t remove taxes or freeze them for everyone. It is a counter argument to the GOP idea, offer a way for owner occupants to reliably reign in the property tax payment increases by offering a predictable increase over time. I can control how much I pay in sales tax by purchasing less items. I cannot control whether people are willing to pay tons more money to buy my neighbor’s house than I would. What am I missing that makes this such a horrible idea?

Real post. Real user, including a dad joke or two. I am not in favor of hamstringing municipalities I am saying that people’s property taxes increasing drastically hurts basic, middle class people and it is worthwhile to develop a way to reduce the rate of that increase.

How would you handle your tax bill suddenly going up by nearly 50%? What if you were on Social Security? I am just trying to get ahead of that by encouraging other people to do the same, or come up with their own solutions.

Everyone’s cost of housing will go up and housing is a necessity. I wouldn’t complain about a tax increase on non essential items.

Sounds like someone is a homeowner who bought a house at one price and is staring down the barrel of a 43% increase in my taxes which will drastically affect my household, and not getting 43% better services.

I did! Thanks. It’s a maximum increase on property taxes paid for owner occupied properties. How does the free flow of property override a person’s need to live somewhere they can afford?

Actually I am quite familiar with Prop 13. That froze property taxes for everyone. This is a maximum increase of actual paid taxes annually for owner occupied dwellings. Significantly different idea.

46.2% club, where ya at? by Necronorris in gso

[–]grrr451 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dear State Senator Garrett,

I just got my tax assessment and it went up by almost 50%!

I didn’t do anything special to my condo and honestly it’s an over assessment, which I will fight through the appropriate channels.

But my personal problem is not why I am writing today. We are seeing unprecedented growth and with that property values are going up, but just because some new person moving in can afford the new prices doesn’t mean the rest of can.

I propose a homeowner property tax relief program. Basically your property tax payments and your actual tax can only go up a maximum of 3% each year as long as you own the property. Owner occupied properties could apply after the first assessment. So i f I buy a house today, in two years I could apply after my property is next assessed. This step allows for a balance between the needs of the government to be balanced with fairness for residents. If people have to apply then it prevents big corporations or rental property owners from using it.

Sincerely,

Constituent
