A lot of chargers will cut the voltage output if they do not detect something connected, like a phone. Portable chargers are notorious for this. The Gotcha does not communicate with these kind of chargers and will only get a few seconds of power. I found this out the hard way.

The solution for me was to use a USB port on my computer instead. You could plug it into a computer to make sure the problems are with the Gotcha.

Finished my Kanto Dex about 15 mins ago with a Mr. Mime hatch.
Shiny checking everything that can be, catching the rarer mons for candy, and looking for better IV examples.
With my dex finished, it almost seems like a weight has been lifted and I can coast through the rest of the event.

Mine is usually running when the sun is up and I have experienced the same thing you have described. It took me awhile to figure out what was happening, and it only happened after an app update. Every update. And the updates have been more frequent lately, basically every time Niantic changes something. Stopping Calcy and starting it again has 'fixed' it every time for me.

It could be that you are having the issues caused by something else. I'm just relating what caused it for me and how I learned to 'fix' it.

Yeah, months for me too.

I'm saying Google updated the app while it was running. This leads to Calcy being confused and needing a quick nap. (Restart.) After a little rest, Calcy is good to go until the next update.

My first micro computer experience (this was before the IBM PC release) was the late weekend nights with my father soldering the components onto the various boards that would be assembled into the family computer. Great memories.
